When I bought my ST (some ages ago) I got a lot of games s/w with it much of which did not impress me. However, one of the games was Defender of the Crown. I have tried and tried to win at this game but have yet to suceed <:-(. I read in a magazine (ST Format -- great mag!) of a cheat. It was said that if, when loading the game, you hold down the 'K' key on the title screen until the game has completed loading, you will have an army of 2048 men. Well I have tried this but again with no success. When I do hold down the 'K' key and the system loads to the point where it brings up the screen requesting that you select which knight you want to be, just as the screen comes up it flashes for an instant. This suggests to me that maybe the cheat is activated, but I still only get about 7 men in my army. Does anyone have know how to get the extra men or alternatively is there a good strategy to follow in order to win ? Thanks for any help. Jonathan

Jon, Haven't played this since i finished it which was about 2 months after getting it. 1) I believe the cheat only works on the amiga (i think). 2) The best tactic is to attack the southern castles immediately, forget about the northern castles. The best one to capture is the camel coloured section (Cornwall & Devon) because these are easily defendable. Then just choose from the others and work your way North. And you've won the game. Hopefully ;-) Let me know how you get on... Lewis.

Jon, I can beat this game most times now, and I agree, you must attack castles in the south, on no account try to build up your army by doing nothing and collecting taxes and buying. Spys come in uefull for checking on the knights castle with the most land, sometimes they leave no army at all in their castles, so attack then, if there are some men in this castle, get some help from Robin who will lend you some to make your numbers higher than the opposition (lend you up to 50 men I think). Remember to always attack other castles, this is the only way to win, I dont know if any of this will be any help to you (you probably know it already). Anyway, good luck with this superb (if old) game. Rich.
