| The DOC file for STDCAT states that the program was never tested
on a two-drive system. However, it was tested with a ram disk, a
single-drive system, and a hard disk.

| Try sending to -
nm%DECWRL::"[email protected]"
If you do not have nmail on your system then leave off the nm%, but then you
will probably have to try many times to get through to DECWRL.

| Any and all recent Internet mail I've gotten (last month or two) has
been routed through DECPA, and not DECWRL, and I've had no problem sending
out it too. I think DECWRL's role has changed (no info, just a hunch based
onmy experience).

795.5 | Extra goodies wanted | CHEFS::BAIN | Alex Bain @REO | Fri Jan 18 1991 07:34 | 27 |
| I'm using STDCAT Vn 4.0. I find it easy to use, and it has
the main features I'm looking for:-
* Fast construction of disk libraries
* User-friendly with good on screen viewing of library
contents
* Good search facilities for finding specific files from my
pile of floppies
* Good printing facilities
I'd like to be able to direct the output to a file instead of
my printer. This would then allow me to edit the output
prior to printing, and it would also alow me to import the
STDCAT generated database into my other database system
(KDATA) which has more sophisticated database handling
facilities.
- Has anyone got any ideas for how I could do this currently?
- I've heard that there is now a STDCAT Vn 4.3. Is it worth
my while to upgrade, and can anyone make it available on the
net?
- What news is there of STDCAT Vn 5.0? Will it have the
ability to direct print output to a file?
Thanks for any answers

| Use the PD BARREL program. It traps any printer output and allows you to write
to a file.

| If you can compile a C-language program, you can generate any report
you want from your STDCAT database by modifying and compiling the
CATOASC.C program that comes with STDCAT.

795.8 | Thanks | CHEFS::BAIN | Alex Bain @REO | Tue Jan 22 1991 08:45 | 14 |
| Thanks for your replies. I've copied across BARREL, and I'm going to
try that - it sounds like I could use it for a few other things too.
Since posting the original question last week, I've heard about a
programme which reformats the catalogue as an ASCII file suitable for
further processing - Roy, I guess that's the one you are referring to.
Unfortunately, I can't compile C-language programmes, and my copy of
STDCAT came with nothing other than a .DOC file. Is there a compiled
version of CATOASC available?
Anyone know about differences between STDCAT V4 and later versions?

795.9 | I'm over a barrel | UKCSSE::RDAVIES | I can't tryp for nots | Wed Jan 23 1991 07:47 | 9 |
| Re barrel
I looked at it, but the files are BARREL.TOS and SDECODE.TOS. This
doesn't seem to match up with the text which says it's an accessory and
will ask for buffer size and provide options. (all of which it doesn't
do).
Can anyone enlighten me.

795.10 | Here's how it works | MGOI01::CSCHMIDT | Scio, Me Nil Scire | Fri Jan 25 1991 06:07 | 26 |
| Hi,
I just stumbled over barrel recently in this conference myself and it
fixes all my problems that I used to have with programs that print to
the parallel port regardless of what your printer setup looks like.
It's very easy to use:
When you double-click barrel.tos for the first time, it asks you how
much buffer space you want to reserve for output files - in
increments of 12kBytes. - So if you want to save one screen-dump, you
have to enter 3 (e.g. 36kBytes).
Then you have some options what barrel should do with the data, which
is fairly self-explaining.
After choosing your options, you exit and barrel is installed in the
background. It will intercept any TOS-calls to bconout().
You can deinstall it, write the contents of barrel to a disk file,etc.
by double-clicking on barrel.tos again.
SDECODE.TOS is a program that barrel needs for working with certain
picture formats - or is it to print out pictures afterwards , sorry I
forgot.
Cheers,
Christoph

795.11 | STDCAT V5.0B available | DECWIN::GILLIAM | | Wed Dec 11 1991 14:11 | 38 |
| Well, Mr. Silliker has finally finished V5.0B of STDCAT. Please note that
STDCAT is shareware ($15 Canadian).
I will place a copy on the e-net (for a limited time) as soon as I
receive it. He will mail you a copy if you send him $5.00 CANADIAN
($7.00 CAN across water).
Here are some excerpts from his letter (sent to anyone who ever
contacted him about STDCAT).
"I had no idea that there would be 50 or more people contacting me
about the program, some suggesting changes, some giving praise, and
some wanting fixes. The support from those letters has provided me with
the initiative to complete V5.0..."
"I do not want anyone to register the program before trying it out. You
may not like some of the changes I have made.
The main features are:
Disks are grouped into user-defined sections.
No disk number, only the disk name is used to sort/qualify disks.
Catalogue partitions and/or floppies in A or B.
Four windows (sections, disks, paths, and files)
Dependent view (similar to the old program)
Flat-end view (no section, disk or path boundaries)
Hierarchical view like old file window (starts at section)
Field qualification (section, disk, path, and files)
Field sorting (sections, disks, paths, and files)
Field enable/disable (all fields)
Print/output to print/file (format depends on view)
Reads V3.x and V4.x catalogue files.
Printer configuration
Program configuration file (window sizes, options)
Disclaimer: I don't know the guy personally. If you have any
questions or complaints about STDCAT, contact him or this notesfile.

795.13 | Disk Corruption with STDCAT V5.0B | KERNEL::BLAND | Norman Bland 833 3797 CSC, Basingstoke | Wed Jun 03 1992 18:21 | 20 |
| ref replies .11 & .12
I have a copy of STDCAT 5.0B which I got from GOODMAN ENTERPRISES (UK).
It's a great program but I have found one very disturbing BUG (I have
not got around to contacting the author yet).
Two of our ST ATARI magazines in the UK sometimes have COVER DISKS with
zero free blocks (they cram the software on).
If you attempt to use the UPDATE DISK NAME of STDCAT to put on/or change
the volume name, you will correct the disk if it has zero free blocks.
As an aside to this, if you have a disk with free blocks and you
attempt to put a volume name on the disk that has an extension i.e.
GFAFILES.BAS, it will not put the volume name on the disk.
Similarly if you already have a volume name that has an extension, then
you cannot change it. Volume names without the extension are fine.
