786.1 | More Problems and solutions | GOONS::MAUDE | | Wed Feb 28 1990 07:48 | 20 |
| Hi All,
>Has anyone else had this problem with Ultima V?
No but, I've had other problems :-
1. My first copy had to be returned as it would not let me out
of the first location - I kept getting an offsetmap error.
2. Like you I didn't wish to have my origionals open for write
so I write protected them and you cannot play the game as the play/dungeon disk
refuses to be recognized. So I used ACOPY to copy the boot disk and an ordinary
copy to place the intro and play disks onto a single DD disk. This played quite
happily until :-
3. My son took the copies to a friend and played on a newer ST
when I got problem 1 again. however a recopy of the ORIGIONALS (write protected
of course) solved this problem.

786.2 | Loads fine, some bugs | CLO::HERSHBERGER | | Wed Feb 28 1990 07:52 | 6 |
| I did not have the problem you describe, works fine on the two
systems I have. I did have a problem with the system locking up a lot.
Especially when trying to save or just after raising stats.
Tom
P.S. I was able to finish the game, but it was a bit frustrating.

786.3 | Phone # & address of Origin Systems | RODNEY::PETERS | Don Peters, CTC2-1/F10, 287-3153 | Wed Feb 28 1990 12:17 | 22 |
| Well, in frustration I called the old phone number I had for Origin
Systems. They used to be located near Manchester, NH, but closed down
that office in the last days of 1989. Luckily, when you call the old
number, you get a recorded message that says what the new number is. I
couldn't find the new number in any documentation that came with Ultima
V. The new phone number, along with the address, is:
512-328-0282
Origin Systems
PO Box 161750
Austin, Texas 78716
When I called, I was put on hold several times. Finally I got a rep, and
explained my problems to her. She said they had been having some problems
with older model STs (which mine is), but not the problem I described.
She recommended I send back my disks for replacement, which I did this
morning.
P.S., on .2
Congratulations Tom, on finishing. I've heard the game is huge, and it
must have taken a lot of effort!

786.4 | MIDI cabability? | RODNEY::PETERS | Don Peters, CTC2-1/F10, 287-3153 | Wed Feb 28 1990 12:18 | 3 |
| I thought I had heard that Ultima V for the ST would implement sound output
via the MIDI port as well as the sound chip. The docs didn't say anything
about this. Has anyone tried MIDI output?

786.5 | SM124 or not ? That's the question ! | COLSWS::GOETZ | Enjoy the silence | Thu Mar 01 1990 01:05 | 7 |

Hello ! :-)
I've ordered ULTIMA V yesterday. Now my question:
Runs it at the good, old SM124 (like ULTIMA II) or not ?

| I have a OLD 1040, I got it when they first came with TOS in rom,
and I am still running TOS 1.0. I just got Ultima V yesterday for
my 21'st birthday and it seems to run fine. But just to be safe I
write-protected my masters, and made copys to run.

786.7 | MEGA ST vs ULTIMA V | COLSWS::GOETZ | Enjoy the silence | Wed Mar 07 1990 07:21 | 11 |

I have a MEGA ST II (with Blitter) and a Problem with ULTIMA V.
When i leave my "Home" to enter Britannia, the diskdrive stops
and the word "OFFSETMAP" were writing to the screen.
STOP.
Is it a Diskerror or is it a Hardwareproblem (TOS) ?

Markus_with_ULTIMA_V_Original, I just got off the phone with Origin Systems.
When I told them about your problem, they said it was a known problem,
and had been fixed in the latest release. You should send your disks back
for a replacement. (I think I included the address in a previous reply).
Also, the woman on the phone informed me that Ultima V would NOT work with
monochrome monitors, and that it would NOT support MIDI output. I was
really disappointed in the latter, since I had been hoping to pick up
a low cost MIDI keyboard and await some great sound. I liked the sound
in Ultima III on my Atari 8 bit system, and thought I heard Richard Garriott
say MIDI would be in Ultima V.

786.9 | Replacement disks work great | RODNEY::PETERS | Don Peters, CTC2-1/F10, 287-3153 | Mon Mar 19 1990 17:04 | 13 |
| Re: .0 & .3
I received a new set of disks from Origin a few days ago. This new set works
fine - no problems. I was even able to use Procopy 1.8 to make a backup of
all three disks (but only the boot disk, number 1, is copy protected). I
play using the backup copies.
Incidentally, the latest issue of Current Notes has a review of Ultima V in
their section on fantasy role playing games.
When I played Ultima III years ago, I mapped out part of the land. But this
version of Ultima seems too big to map. Has anyone else been successful at
mapping Ultima V? (and is it necessary?)

786.10 | | CLO::HERSHBERGER | | Tue Mar 20 1990 07:44 | 6 |
| Although bigger in size and more locations, the map is identical to
Ultima IV. I put the cloth map on the wall and used it to get around.
The under-ground is a different story. Is there a version # on
your new disks? Although I finished the game there were a number of
bugs on my disks.

786.11 | No version number on label | RODNEY::PETERS | Don Peters, CTC2-1/F10, 287-3153 | Fri Mar 23 1990 08:24 | 7 |
| >Is there a version # on your new disks?
I just checked last nite, and didn't see any. It looks like they simply
returned disks 2 and 3 to me, since the labels look the same as the
former ones. But the label for disk 1 was different (white background).
No trace of a version number, tho.

786.12 | where is Shard of Cowardice | HAN01::SCHOLZ | They called him 'The Brain' | Mon Jul 09 1990 05:27 | 16 |
|
Is there anyone out there - perhaps you, Tom, because you have already
finished the game, who can tell me, how to find this damned "Shard of
Cowardice". It's location should be L''A' L''I' and it should be reached
from the dungeon Hythloth on the Isle of Avatar.
I only find an exit to the underworld, but it is far away from the
location above and the only thing you cant do there, is to find the
magical weapons and armours.
I think, there must be a special room within Hythloth where you have to
use a special magic to reach other room, but I don't know which room
and what magic.
I've tried there to continue for hours and days (nights).
Any hints????

| Shard of Cowardice help follows;
You are in the right location, but you need some gems and blink
spells to get to the shard. It takes some trial and error to blink to
the right spots. Good luck.

786.14 | to blink or not to blink | HAN01::SCHOLZ | They called him 'The Brain' | Tue Jul 10 1990 11:12 | 7 |
| Tom,
I think you can't blink in dungeons nor in combat mode. So where to
use these blink spells? The small piece of underworld is surrounded
by large mountains, over which you can't blink, or can you?

786.15 | Happy hopping | CLO::HERSHBERGER | | Wed Jul 11 1990 10:03 | 12 |
| Info on blinking follows
Once you exit the dungeon, go west as far as you can, and use a
gem. You should see a open space to the west and maybe the north.
If you are aligned to the open space you can blink over to that area.
You need to blink a number of times to reach the shard. You also
need to blink back so be sure you have enough blink spells before you
start.
