Okay folks here's another printer for you 8 ^) I have been given a printer in a box with no instructions with it at all. So, ANY help will be appreciated. Let me give you what little info I have. It is a thermal (yuch... yes I know, but it was free !!!) printer and the box describes it as follows : Trademark = SERIAL 8056 compact printer. Features = 80 columns, 56 characters per second (WOW !!!) RS232 serial interface Made in = Japan. That's all I have. The rs232 lead is wires straight into the back of the printer (ie no plug at the prionter end and the rs232 plug at the other end has been cut off. What I want is (ideally) a manual, but other than that instructions on how to rewire the rs232. At the end of the cable are the following wires 1. The sheilding wire, one white wire, one red wire and two black wires. Can anyone help me please. Thanks, Jonathan

Well - Do you have a voltmeter? Assume the black wires are ground. Check for continuity between them. If they come up connected, then wire one of them to pin 7 of a female 25-pin connector and ignore the other. If not, well, check for continuity between them and the shield. If one is connected to the shield, it goes to pin 1, and the other to pin 7. If you want to connect the shild to pin 1, you can, but personally I wouldn't bother. Turn on the printer and measure the voltage between the black wire and the white wire, and also between the black wire and the red wire. Whichever shows a strong voltage between -5 and -12 (I THINK it's negative) should be attached to pin 3. The other wire will show a weak + or - 0 to 3 volts, and should be attached to pin 2. Connect the result to the serial port of the ST and start printing. I wonder what baud rate it uses?

Thanks Jeff, I don't have a voltmeter, but it is not impossible that I can lay my hands on one so I'll give it a go. Anyone got a manual ?????????

HA! (A clue to the printers pedegree...) Dixons used to give this away with the good old Sinclair QL when it was trying to get shot of them! Jon

Thanks for the tip Jon, I don't suppose you happen to know of someone with a QL (and such a printer) who might have a manual ??? Reaching a straws Jonathan |
