737.1 | There is such a product | PRNSYS::LOMICKAJ | Jeffrey A. Lomicka | Tue Jan 16 1990 10:25 | 9 |
| There is a kit available, mostly for use with BBoard software, that
adds 8 serial lines via the cartridge port, and software that extends
the bios calls Bconin, Bconout, and Bconstat to access those ports.
Since hardware is involved, the cost is, shall we say, not trivial.
It's certainly over $100, maybe close to $200.
I'll hunt around and see if I can locate any information about it. I
think I remember reading it in an old (over a year old) STREPORT.

| There is also a four-port mux made by Beckenmeyer Development Systems
that plugs into the serial port... he supports it for his "RTX" kernel
and MT C-shell, but I don't think he supports it for GEM...

| I couldn't find the information I referred to in .1.
Perhaps try calling the companies that make BBoard systems?
There is also a simple hardware change that allows the MIDI port to be
used as a regular serial port. You tie the baud rate pin of the MIDI
uart to the serial port clock, and you replace the MIDI tranceivers with
standard EIA423 tranceivers, and you've got a second port running at the
same speed as the first.

| Hi Jeff,
thank's a lot for this information. But that means, i never can use
the original MIDI - Feature again, exept i implement an switch to
the uart. Do you have any schematic of it?
Regards,
Rolf

| I don't have a schematic. To work it out, you'll need a manual for the
68901 chip and the 6850 chip. You will also have to figure out which of
the two 6850's in your machine is MIDI, and which is the keyboard.
