723.0. "OMEGA (CYBERTANKS)" by CURRNT::BADMAN (Ice cubes: square yet cool!) Tue Jan 02 1990 09:18

I've got a great game called OMEGA by Mindscape. It's a little bit
like COREWARS only more complex and more fun.

You work for the OSI corporation who, among other things, build
CYBERTANKS. A cybertank is a weapon of the future which thinks for
    itself.

Your job as a cybertank engineer is to design the chassis and provide
the AI for a tank (using a BASIC like language) and then have your
tank rated by the company in order to raise your tanks security
classification. You do this by competing against company tanks on
a battlefield where you require at least a 70% success rate (win
7 or more battles out of ten) to succeed. Success increases your
budget by 1000 credits which allows you to improve your tanks chassis
design and to kit it out with many more special features.

The game is really good fun (although it takes quite some time to
learn and to get the hang of).

Now the crunch! There is the facility to play against user defined
cybertanks in both a straight combat simulation and team combat
mode (provided your tanks are classified highly enough to afford
    the comms equipment!).

If anyone has a copy of OMEGA would they be interested in exchanging
tanks to enhance these features ???

If enough people have OMEGA, we could set up a notesfile to download
    tank designs into ...

This sounds a lot like an old game for the Apple II series whose name I forget.
After reading a review of it in Creative Computnig back in 81 or so it got
me really excited.

I just got Omega last Friday and have now reached Omega security
clearance. Now I have to write the AI code to handle all the new
equipment I just added... :-) Great game!

Exchanging tanks and battlefields would be a lot of fun -- count me in!
It would also be fun to discuss user-written logic capsules and AI,
favorite tank tactics, and the like.

PS: A nit with .0: my copy says it's from Origin Systems (the people
who did the Ogre game for the ST). Guess what the name of the O.S.I.
tank that you must defeat to reach Omega level is...

I've got HUNTER to SECRET but he's having a bit of trouble against
PANDA. Should be reasonably easy to overcome though.

I like the idea of writing some team tanks too. Add another dimension
    to it.

How many more tanks after PANDA ???

Do you have anything more to do in the game once you've reached OMEGA
or is that it as far as computer opponents go ???

Oh! and sorry; it IS Origin, not Mindscape !

Actually, I went through them so fast that I don't remember. There
are at least the following security levels: "Top Secret", "Eyes
    Only", and of course, "Omega".

What I'm doing now that I've reached Omega is rewriting my AI to
support the new hardware and upgrade my tactics. I'll then pit the
tank against all of the other tanks I designed for previous levels in
    a simulation.

Once you've reached Omega level, you can't pit your tanks against the
computer's anymore. However, Origin has a BBS to facilitate the
exchange of tanks. In fact, they're currently accepting tank
submissions for a tournament, for which the cutoff date is Jan 31 (so
says a notice that came in the Omega package). I've tried dialing
in, but I haven't been successful yet. When I get my AI code
rewritten, I hope to be able to download tanks from the BBS and pit
mine against them. If it does reasonably well, I'll submit my
    design.

In any event, if I do get some tanks downloaded from the BBS, I'll post
a response here. If you like, I can transcribe the entire text of the
    tournament notice.

For further discussion, see PICA::GAMES topic 1268. I'm continuing
discussion there where players on other machines are more likely to
    contribute.
