717.0. "New atarist user >>> help ! " by BALADE::BASCUNANA () Tue Dec 26 1989 08:54

I just bought a 520 stf for my daughter's christmass and of course there are
a lot of things that I don't understand ...

With the atari I bought a game software which was Beverly Hills something as
they said I inserted the floppy and I switched on the atari then a window
appeared , inside of this window I could see the picture of some files and
programs but the titles were garbage characters and it's been impossible to
load anything, does it mean that the density is not corect or did I do a
mistake ?

I understood that there were some soft from PD which were distributed across
the network however how is it possible to copy these files of the atari's
disks ?

Thanks for your help ,
Patrick.

From one new user to another....

I've noticed this with disks which are not GEM compatible, i.e. you don't
get up the normal desk-top then click on the file, but put the disk in
and power on or reset it.

I realise from reading you message that this is what you say you are
doing, so beyond this pioint I can't be any help.

If you insert the diskette, then power the Atari up and the still
you got garbage in the window (e.g. absolutely senseless indication
of used bytes in the upper left corner or garbage characters below
the file icons, folders which won't open or then still show the
same window) for me is an indication for a bad diskette. There is
some problem with the directory structure of this diskette. Try
to get a new one in return from the dealer!
