| I should be getting my TOS 1.4 ROMs today.
One of our local Atari dealers now has them -- and they have no problem
selling them without installing them. More data later...

625.2 | Some programs that DO work... | DUGGAN::WEAVER | Laboratory Data Products/Science | Thu Oct 05 1989 00:20 | 14 |
| The types of programs that would have problems would be utilities
that would have reasons to access undocumented system variables.
I can tell you some programs that DO work on TOS 1.4.
EasyDraw V3, V2.3 (V3 received last Saturday!)
LDW Power V1.2? (bought within two months)
Touch-up (current update)
Uniterm V2.0E, V1.8 (V1.8 doesn't like GDOS)
Flash V1.6
SEDT V4(256) & V3(248?)
Mark Williams C release 3.0 & C Source Level Debugger

625.6 | Watch out for STARTGEM | QARRY::BHAMILTON | Buzz Hamilton | Thu Nov 02 1989 10:38 | 10 |
| I finally got my TOS 1.4 chips!
Let me warn you about STARTGEM. I had forgotten that I had used this
program on several disks to make the auto-boot. I thought that several
games were incompatible because they screen would say "Does not work
with this version of TOS". It was STARTGEM that was printing this
message. STARTGEM is not needed with TOS 1.4. You can install an
application as AUTO start at boot time - it doesn't even need an AUTO
folder.

625.7 | TOS 1.4 bug | CSC32::B_NOTTINGHAM | Bill Nottingham | Tue Nov 14 1989 10:32 | 13 |
| I have had my TOS 1.4 for a few months now.....
Falcon does work with TOS 1.4
However, there is a documented bug in TOS 1.4...forgot the specifics.
My Neodesk 2.05 was having problems bombing until I placed their PD
shel_fix.prg in my auto folder.
So...before you call your old program incompatable you might want to
try it with the patch program.

625.8 | so I'm a little behind the times... | 2113::DAN | Dan Gosselin, CUP Engineering | Wed Mar 14 1990 11:27 | 8 |

How does a non-developer get the new 1.4 ROMs? Are they publically
available now? Do any dealers in the Southern NH or MA area perform
the upgrades? I've got a Mega ST2 and would prefer not having to
rely on my own hardware skills to get the new chips installed.
Also, how much?

625.9 | | PRNSYS::LOMICKAJ | Jeffrey A. Lomicka | Wed Mar 14 1990 12:48 | 12 |
| Rainbow TOS is generally available through Atari dealers worldwide.
R.F. Microtech, last time I talked to them (last weekend) still had
four or five sets of the 6-chip version in stock at $99. He is an
autorized repair center, will install the roms at no extra cost, if you
can find his house. (508) 667-8900
I ordered my ROMS from him last weekend, but did the install myself.
You can also get them from The Bit Bucket (508) 443-9731, but may have
to wait for them to appear in stock. Mega's tend to prefer the two
chip version, so you might have to wait anyway.

625.10 | Thanks for the quick reply | 2113::DAN | Dan Gosselin, CUP Engineering | Wed Mar 14 1990 13:05 | 3 |

625.11 | | PRNSYS::LOMICKAJ | Jeffrey A. Lomicka | Wed Mar 14 1990 13:21 | 2 |
| R.F. Microtech is in Billerica. Bit Bucket is in Sudbury. There is
another Bit Bucket in Newton, if that's closer for you.

625.12 | Ok, but how reliable is R.F. Microtech? | 2113::DAN | Dan Gosselin, CUP Engineering | Wed Mar 14 1990 15:20 | 9 |
| I'm in Nashua, so Billerica would be closest.
You say that R.F. Microtech is an 'official' Atari repair center?
After reading 499.5, should I trust them with an installation?
Has anyone else ever had any experiences (good or bad) with R.F. Microtech?
Dan

625.13 | I've had good experiences | RODNEY::PETERS | Don Peters, CTC2-1/F10, 287-3153 | Thu Mar 15 1990 08:33 | 12 |
| >Has anyone else ever had any experiences (good or bad) with R.F. Microtech?
Yes, I've dealt with Bob at R.F. Microtech many times over the past few
years, and have always been satisfied with his service. He did my 1 meg
upgrade on my old 520ST, and I've had no problem with it since then. He
also recently fixed an intermittant crash problem with a friends 1040ST.
I've seen him come to several of our ST user group meetings, both the
one in Acton-Boxboro and the one in Nashua.
Your biggest problem may be just finding his house - there is no clue on
the outside that he is an Atari registered repair center!

Pardon my ignorance, but could you tell me more about the Nashua ST
users group? I had no idea that one existed...
