616.1 | patch for BACKUP.PRG ? | UFHIS::BFALKENSTEIN | | Thu Sep 28 1989 04:51 | 13 |
|
I made the same experience. In TOS 1.4, which I have in the ROMs since
one month, FOLDERXXX is no longer necessary because this bug is fixed.
There came a program together with AHDI (DIR.PRG or DIRREST.PRG or so)
which shows you the amount of still creatable directories. This program
comes up with ??? when started under TOS 1.4.
Even though I have still the same problem as mentioned before while
restoring the harddisk with BACKUP.PRG by David Chiquelin. I think this
cannot be the 40-folder bug anymore. I also have to restore manually
after about 38 folders. Maybe somebody has a patch for BACKUP.PRG ?

616.2 | This is more serious that I thought | PRNSYS::LOMICKAJ | Jeff Lomicka | Thu Sep 28 1989 10:41 | 28 |
| Well, this is a problem with the backup program I use also - but I was
able (last night) to find a way around it.
If the backup program will force a "media change" condition after each
time it creates a directory, the TOS will dispose of the old folder
data, and you will be able to continue creating new folders.
I also don't think that the "XXX" part of "FOLDRXXX" is particularly
accurate, and I think the estimate is a little low. I am curious as to
if you have to count the "." and ".." backpointers in the folder count.
If these count, you will have to multiply by three.
My experiments were as follows:
1. I loaded a FOLDR400.PRG
2. I started a backup of a partition containing about 170 folders into
an empty partition.
3. It seemed to work, but the system crashed horribly when it tried to
exit, and the backup partition exhibited weird behavior.
I then modified the backup program (I have the source) to "kick" the
backup disk after each time it had to create a folder. I repeated the
experiment, and the backup completed without a problem.
I'm going to continue to persue this approach, and see if I can make
even more of the 40 folder problems go away for my backup program.

616.3 | Which Backup/Restore utility ? | MUNCSS::BURKE | Jim Burke, @UFC | Thu Oct 05 1989 05:39 | 6 |
| I use TURTLE (& Terrapin) for backup & restore. I'm sure I read in the
documentation that Turtle overcomes the 40-folder problem. I've had no
problem, but I always boot up with FOLDR300.

Hi Jim,
How do you RESTORE using Turtle?? I have Turtle and found it super fat
on the backup, but the restore is manual, I thought. I have just ordered
UNTURTLE from a P.D. library, to do the Restore phase.
By the way,
I also ordered some fonts, a disk of picture conversion progs and a
CAD progem called Cad2D by a software house called JIL corp. (Jesus is
Lord). This sounds an unusual name for a software company, can anyone
tell me how this name came about, and any info on this company?

616.5 | One guess ! | MUNCSS::BURKE | Jim Burke, @UFC | Sun Oct 08 1989 12:47 | 18 |
| Pat,
I think it's called UN-TURTLE !
I got it from a PD Library. I did test it before installing it, and it
seemed to work OK.
I do know that Turtle solves the 40-f problem, but that's on a BACKUP.
I'm not certain if UN-TURTLE does it too, on the RESTORE operation.
I doubt it, since it was written by somebody else.
Luckily I havn't had the need yet to do an emergency restore, but
that'll come !
Let me know if you want it, and I'll upload it to my account for
anybody.
Regards,
Jim

616.6 | HOW BIG A RAM DISK? | UKCSSE::KEANE | | Mon Oct 09 1989 04:11 | 12 |
| Thanks Jim,
But I have now got UNturtle from STUK on a PD disk!.
I was playing eith TURTLE and the TRAM disk prog that goes with it. I
have an 1M (520ST), and I want to get the most data on a Floppy. What
is the MAX size of Ram disk I can get into memeory, and still run
Turtle?? Do I have to take out Folder200.Prg?? I have remeoved all
accessories, and I cant seem to get over 720K, (9 * 80 track)!
Cheers

616.7 | TURTLE eats the 40-folder bug ! | MUNCSS::BURKE | Jim Burke, @UFC | Mon Oct 09 1989 20:20 | 17 |
| Pat,
1. Take out FOLDRxxx altogether. Turtle handles it itself. This
should give you a bit more room.
2. The size of the ramdisk depends on the size (note, PRECISE format)
of the floppies you have formatted.
3. As a last resort, read the docs !
4. What did I say in a recent note ? Arghhhhhhh! I had to do a
restore !
Well, UNTURTLE worked OK, as long as I disabled it from fixing date
copying. In general, once I had got the hang of it, it was OK.
Any use ?
Jim
PS I've got Mega-2 with a Third Coast Tech's hard disk. TOS V1.09, I
think.
