The following was in issue 101 of STREPORT: - Sunnyvale, CA. ****** TT OFFERS THE 68030 AND RAM CHOICES!!! ***** -------------- As of August 14th,... Atari is getting IT ALL together..... "For the really budget-minded," "Atari will introduce selectable 68030 machines on August 25. They have 2 and 6 megs of RAM, respectively both offer 1,280-by-960 monochrome and 640-by-480 color, have real VME slots, and come with AT&T Unix System V for an extra $299 on top of their $3,000 and $5,000 prices - hard disks included." In addition, a stripped down version ( 2mb )sans monitor and Hard Disk, will go for around 1500.00 and it, as well as, the 6 mb version will operate fine on the SC1224/SM124 as well. The TT will be downwardly compatible, ie; your present hard disk will be fine etc... This machine is expected to set the standards for the next five years. Look for the NEW line to appear on the covers of STart over the next few months. =========================================================================== Also, in the September 89 issue of STart, Sam Tramiel mentioned that the TT will come with an optional higher quality keyboard, one meeting German DIN standards and which has a very good "feel" to it. He went on to say it would not come with a floating point processor, but that you could plug one onto the empty socket designated for it as an option. Most ST software should run as is, but some will require slight modification due to the fact that the 68030 is a bit different than the 68000 hardwarewise. I've seen many references to the August 25th date as the date of the TT announcement. Looks like we'll just have to wait and see.

I'm interested in upgrading from the ST to something faster. With all the junk I want to hang on my ST, it seems like the TT will be a good bet. (I want a DeskCart, Spectra GCR, PC-Ditto, and at least 2 meg of memory, and not have to do a lot of power down, switch cartridges, power up moves.) I also covet the mega-pixel mono screen, which is now about a $2000 option for an ST. So, from what I've gathered, the matrix looks something like this: $1500 $3000 $5000 Mips increase x x x mega-p screen x x 2 meg memory x x 6 meg memory X higher cap. HDrive x x space for PC-Ditto ? ? ? So, the question becomes, are the new monitor and HDrive worth $1500 (comparing $1500 to $3000). It would seem that they are, since it would cost at least $2000 to $2500 to get that increment via. the Moniterm monitor and a separate hard disk. Does anyone make a cartridge port switcher or will Spectra GCR have a thru connection for the DeskCart to be added? - hardware dreaming, Chris
575.2 | Mega-pixel screen not std.? | SKETCH::PAULHUS | Chris @ MLO6B-2/T13 dtn 223-6871 | Mon Oct 02 1989 11:15 | 6 |
Correction (I think) to .1: The latest things I've read seem to indicate that the mega-pixel screen is Not standard with any of the systems. The CPU can drive it in mono mode, but it is an option probably at close to the $2000 tag I've seen so far. So, the $1500 upgrade from an ST (keeping old hard drive and mono monitor) seems to become more attractive. - Chris

It talking over the above with Jeff Lomika, he pointed out that the Moniterm mega-pixel monitor has a bunch of electronics in it that the mega-pixel screen for the TT will not need, so all you need is a screen that will accept the high number of pixels/line and high number of lines. This should be closer to a $1000 item than the Moniterm unit which is about $2000. This is getting complicated - Chris "Action based on incomplete information requires periodic review." |
