I was reading a review of Fontz recently and noted that it has the ability to convert mac/amiga fonts to GDOS format. Has anyone done/tried this? (If so, are you willing to share? :^) ) The reviewer said there were a large number of pd fonts available for the mac, Is this true (you Spectre/Sac/Alladin users should know)? and if so, are they available via the Net? I'd be willing to get Fontz specifically for its conversion capability if this were the case... Kent

You have to do the usual binhex and stuffit procedure on a Macintosh (or on a Macintosh emulator on the ST, I suppose) to extract the data from these files. $ dir rt95::mac$fonts: hi jeff I suppose stuffit is the mac equiv of Arc??, Is there any simple way of reducing these files to a binary with a vms or St utility ? Pat_WHO_HASNT_GOT_A MAC, (this seems to be the new fashion in signoffs)

Re: .2 Maybe if there's no equivalent of stuffit/etc. on the ST or VMS, some kind person who has a mac emulator or a mac could unstuff 'em and make them available to us (us being the atari STer's w/ GDOS)... So we could convert them to GDOS format? I don't have any mac access either... Re: .1 thanks for the listing, Roy. Kent

I have a Mac 2048Ke and two flavors of Mac emulators (Magic Sac and Spectre 128)... and -- I even have Fontz! I've never tried any of this, but I'm willing to try, if you're interested. - hbm
556.6 | Can I help with the work! | UKCSSE::KEANE | Fri Aug 04 1989 04:09 | 16
Hi, I would be very grateful if you could have a go, Unfortunately, I would think that there is an awful lot of work involved in converting these fonts. I have a Font editor too, Font-Plus, so I would like to share the conversion load. If you could destuff or whatever you call it from the MAc format. and rearc the mac fonts, I will pull a few over the net and see how I get on doing the conversions! If you agree give me a mail, Pat Keane.
556.7 | The software does most of it, right? | CADSYS::DALTON | Cereal Killer. | Fri Aug 04 1989 10:35 | 10 |
I willing to help too (I'll have to get Fontz first though)! It might not be too much work, depending on whether the mac has bit mapped or scalable fonts. If they're bit mapped there will already be a bunch of different point sizes created and they'll just have to be moved to the GDOS format (is this right?). If they have to be scaled there will be lots of touch up work required! Kent

Re: .6 > If you could destuff or whatever you call it from the MAc format. and > rearc the mac fonts, I will pull a few over the net and see how I get > on doing the conversions! The Mac world is stranger than you think; their files have a complicated internal structure... this can be like block-copying an RMS indexed file to an Ultrix system and expecting to be able to read it. I'm going to have to do quite a bit of experimentation before I get a process that can actually _do_ this (move a font file from Mac-land to ST-land and have Fontz! understand it). - hbm

I've got a few dozen or so Amiga bit-mapped fonts that I'd be willing to place in ARC format (the ST uses that identical ARC format as the Amiga. The Amiga structures it's FONTS: directory in what may be an unusual way. The directory FONTS must have in it further subdirectories with specific font sizes stored there. In the main FONT directory, there must be a 'fontname.font' descriptor file that corresponds to each font type. For example, here's a typical directory structure... FONTS: Pearl (DIR) 8 9 10 Ruby (DIR) 12 14 16 Diamond (DIR) 13 15 16 17 Pearl.font Ruby.font Diamond.font Any takers? Ed.

sorry, but this topic is a little bit weired, so I have to ask: You are talking about a program which converts Mac-fonts to GDOS Fonts, am I right? Is this program PD or Shareware? If yes, Why doesn't anyone give a pointer to copy it from? If the program is able to copy Mac-fonts, how does it expect the data? in atari raw data format? this souldn't be a problem: all Macs having a FDHD (High density Floppy Drive) are able to write and read 720 k atari disks, so all we need to know is: does this program expect just the data in a file, or is there anything else required? Re: .12 > You are talking about a program which converts Mac-fonts to GDOS > Fonts, am I right? If you are refering to "Fontz!", yes, that is what we're talking about. It is NOT public domain, it is a commercial program from a company called "Neocept". - hbm |
