Calling all ST owners in Valbonne - Help ... do you know of a good repair shop in the area ? I have an old 520ST (rev c board circa 1985) 512K RAM SS disk and Hi-RES monitor. Something drastic has happened. The other night I was playing my favourite PD game (an excellent German game of patience in hi-res) when the screen froze regularly spaced vertical lines appeared over the displayed image the system did not respond to either keyboard or mouse input. Using the reset button appeared to have no effect. Powering off and on the machine refused to re-boot, no disk activity no screen display (screen was black). Power lights were on the ST and the monitor but not the disk drive. I changed the monitor for a tv and scart cable and retried this time the screen was white and display some kind of distorted grid still no disk activity. In error I unplugged everything from the socket without switching off and the disk motor made that familar old noise before all the lights went out. I have tried those things like lifting the left hand corner and dropping it. I looked inside for anything obvious. But I have come to the conclusion I need the assistance of someone who knows someting about how this thing works... Can you make any recommendations ? Cheers, Harry Richards

Hello Harry. I have a similar problem with my 520. That problem is that the two sockets for the two sqareshaped chip's are sometimes bad. The springload in the pins is not strong enough. I solve the problem (temporary), by putting a small plastic washer under the chip's (~0.3mm). I don't know if You have the same problem. But You may give it a try. W A R N I N G .... Be very careful when You remove the chip's, they are static sensitive. You must use a wriststrap. (Borrow one from field- service). Remove one at the time, so You don't mix them. Good luck. Well 1 year and several moves later I have had my French ST repaired in the UK. It seems that there was a problem with the MMU. A change of chip and I am now back to the games that were popular 18 months ago. For anyone who lives in or near south London I recommend a Penge TV and Video Repair shop (081 659 2851) for good cheap repairs and memory upgrades. Has anyone got any recommendations for either games (driving or shoot-em up) and somewhere local to Reading where they can be bought cheaply ? Cheers, Harry |
