521.0. "VIP professional question" by SUOSW3::KAISER (me again...) Thu Jun 29 1989 04:06

Some VIP professional users out there?

If I'm working with VIP on my mono monitor it works fine, but if I start VIP
on a color monitor I get a dialog box saying "Cannot open work station".
Afterwards the desktop reappears. This behaviour can be reproduced on the mono
monitor if the VIP folder is not in the root directory of a disk or partition.
Anyone else has seen this?

Thanks
-Hans

Yes - I consistently got this message (mono system only), and the
only way I could get round it, was to run VIP from a Ramdisk. I'm sure
I tried to run it from the dist. disk (I want to use it from h/d), and
still got this error message. I'll check the 'root dir' setup, but I'm
not convinced that this was the problem.
In short, the only way I could get it to run, was from Ramdisk. I
have a Mega-2, so this was no problem.	I'm afraid I've never
attempted to run it on colour, so I can't help you there.

What are people's impressions of VIP. I get the impression that it
has been ported onto the ST, with little attempt to optimise using GEM.
That is; they ported it over and "got it working", then left it.
It is powerful enough, but sluggish - even on my simple s/sheets.

I use VIP occasionally on the ST. Yes, it is SLOW! I believe there is
    a text-only version -- faster? -- don't know.

I like the use of the mouse, et all, but want/need the speed of a
better version. Macro execution is also slow.

What are the fastest ("interactive vs. batch" ;-) 123-like spreadsheets
    on the ST?

While I haven't used it, the ads indicated that LDW Power is fast and
1-2-3 compatible. It can be had, mail-order, for about $90.
