513.0. "replace system font in ROM?" by BERN01::RUGGIERO () Wed Jun 21 1989 04:00
Hi there friends,
I want to replace that systemfont coming with the Atari. I really do not
need those hebrew characters. For that I have two programs: POWER replaces
the systemfont when you have a RAM based TOS. This works really fine and you
can use any font you have that can be edited with OLIFONT. FONTROM is
supposed to do the fontreplacement also with ROM-TOS. This usually works.
Fine so far, but now the limitations:
Only with the RAM-TOS you have a 100% replacement. UNITERM for instance
accesses the font in some very direct way. Even if GEM uses the newly installed
font (installed by FONTROM), UNITERM goes directly to the font in the ROM. Only
with RAM based TOS (patched by POWER.PRG) nobody knows that there might be
ROMs in the machine, too.
Now my question:
Does anybody know how to patch a font into the ROM? How is a font stored in
ROM? Is it the same structure as in a font file? Where in the ROM is the font?
Are there (global) system pointers to the font so that I can find the font
also with newer TOS releases. I currently have a 1040 with the old ROMs,
a MegaST2 with the blitter TOS and TOS1.4beta disk/RAM-based
Thanks for any help
