Since the 68010 is pin compatible with the 68000 is it possible to just replace the processor in the ST and get a performace increase (the 68010 has better microcode) ? Stephen.

Swapping from a 68000 to a 68010 on an Amiga gives an astounding 3-5% performance increase. Some programs with tight repetitive loops can see as much as 50%, but that is extremely rare. Look around for a 16 MHz 68000 board for the ST; I know several have been announced. I have a 16 MHz Amiga that truly sees 20-50% speed increases. Ed.

Swapping the 68000 with a 68010 is not easy on the ST, the OS wasen't written to handle the 68010. The stack is layed out differently on exceptions on a 68010 from a 68000. Also, on the 68000 a program in usermode can read the Status Register, this is a priv. violation on a 68010, and generates an exception. Bill Powers

Have any of these boards (16MHz 68000) been seen in the UK? ...and what sort of price are we talking? Stephen. |
