417.0. "address error due to heat?" by BERN01::RUGGIERO () Wed Mar 08 1989 03:29

I seem to have a heat problem with my MegaST2
 After about an hour of work I get 3 bombs (address error). This is independant
from the application running. It happens with all TOS versions and with the
MacEmulator.

I opened the computer and tried to find any hot chips but I couldn't track
down the origin of the error.

Any idea around what could be the cause?
There is no warranty on the machine and I know about soldering and hardware

417.13 bombs with MAC emulator installed?LDP::WEAVERLaboratory Data Products/ScienceWed Mar 08 1989 17:398
    Have you tried running without the MAC emulator installed in the
    cartridge port? The first Mega I received had a very similar sounding
    problem, though I can't remember the specifics. If I removed the
    Magic Sac, it ran just fine. The dealer swapped out the Mega and
    the problem was gone. I would take it back to the dealer and get
    it fixed/replaced.

417.2"Heat" vs. "Mechanical"IOENG::JWILLIAMSWelcome to the Bush LeagueWed Mar 08 1989 18:1612
    "Heat" problems may also be "Mechanical" problems. If the megas
    use a ground shield like the 520's and 1040's, then I would suggest
    making sure nothing can short. I had a problem very similar on a
    1040.

    Here's a quick test:

    If it's mechanical then it'll be provoked by shock and vibration.
    How many people remember smacking the side of a TV? Try pushing
    hard on your keyboard, for example, and see what that does.

        Better late than never and this also seemed to be the best
        spot for this question.

        I finally received my copy of `The Duel - Test Drive II'
        yesterday. I booted it up and it came up fine. Played four
        games in a row and enjoyed it. (Neat game ! :^))

        Then last night after having taken a break. I started the
        system up and worked through the modem into work for about an
        hour, then decided to play a game before going to bed and
        couldn't get the game to start. Kept getting three bombs.
        Figured it was heat and just went to bed thinking I'd have to
        put a note in here this morning.

        Well this morning I tried it again. Same thing ! Three
        bombs and the system had been off all night. Figured I'd try
        to copy the game to a blank floppy and even that errored out.
        (`The data on disk A: may be damaged, use the correct type
        floppy, make sure your hard disk is connected properly' style
        message.)

        Now I'm worried though. I'm worried if maybe my 360Kb drive
        is glitching in there somewhere and causing problems/writing
        bad checks (oops, I mean data). (I've also been having a
        heck of a time UNARCing/UNZIPping files copied via CKermit
        too. THEY keep barfing out on me as well. No error
        messages. . .not much of anything to run with !)

        Can anyone help me here ? If more information is needed,
        I'll do my best to enter it in the finest of detail. Almost
        wish I could go to that NaVAUS meeting/swap tonight, but four
        hours drive one way is a tad much on a work night. :^))
        Thanks in advance.

        Matt

        Nope, the disks were write enabled just like the instructions
        said.

The KERMIT/ZOO/ARC problem may be unrelated.
