385.0. "More than 1 meg upgrade" by KERNEL::FLOWERS (Hero of the Green Screen...) Thu Jan 26 1989 07:38

    Hello all,

I am writing this for a friend of mine....can you upgrade
a 1040st (or even a 520st) to more than 1 meg of mem???
If so what chips do you need and what else has to be done.
In other words do you have to by special add-on boards or
can someone with reasonable soldering skills carry out this
    mod???

    Thanks,

    Jason.

Oh yes another quick question. Is there any software arond that
will allow you to format ONE partition on a hard disk? (Genuine
    Atari disk??)

Yes on both counts.

To upgrade to 2= MB, you remove a half-meg of 256Kx1 RAM's, and replace
them with 1024Kx1's and a LOT of green wires. To upgrade to 4MB, you
remove all 32 of the 256Kx1 rams and replace them with 32 1024Kx1 rams
and a whole lot of green wires. An article explaining the 2.5mb upgrade
in detail appears in one of the recent on-line magazines posted by Buzz.
Check 331.

The Supra hard disk drive tools work fine on the Atari hard disk, and
seem to be freely available. (Well, I didn't pay for my copy anyway.
Apparently they give it away on Compuserve, and make their money selling
the corresponding hardare.) One of the tools (suputil, I believe) has
an entry called "zero a partition", which re-writes the file structure
data in the partition without formatting the drive. It corresponds to
the VMS INIT command.

I don't know if it works if you are using Atari's hard disk driver, but
it works great with Supra's.

The article on upgrading the 1040 to 2.5MB is in issue 2 of STZMAG,
which is in VINO::PORT:[BHAMILTON.ST]STZMAG.002.
