378.0. "Swapping drive select connections" by SMAC10::NEALE (Steve <Fire and Forget, until you miss>) Tue Jan 24 1989 06:11

I cannot find this mentioned elsewhere so here goes..

One of the problems with some non Atari 3.5 drives is that there is no through
port facility. For those of us with STM's not STFM's who would like to chain
a second drive off their SF354 but use the new 1mb dive as drive 0 (booting
etc..) Could we just switch the drive select connections on the ST pinouts?

Or is life more complicated?

Thanks for any comments in advance.

Life is easier, just chain the 314 first, I don't think I ever had
a problem with that when I owned my old 520 STM. Life is complicated
for the 520 STFM owner, however, as I recall that the second floppy
was driven off drive select 0.

The way I think it works is that drive 0 sees both drive 0 and drive
1 select. If the select is for drive 0, then it keeps it, if it
is for 1, it passes a drive select 0 out its port to drive 1. The
advantage of this scheme is that all floppies can work either as
driver 0 or 1. Someone please correct me if I got this wrong.

Does the first drive see both drive 0 and drive 1 signals?

If so, it should be possible to jumper the drive itself to be drive
    1. Then you need to rewire things so that drive 0 select gets to
the external, end of chain, drive.

It sounds possible to me, but what do I know?

378.3I swapped pins 5 and 6 and....SMAC10::NEALESteve <JRST .>Wed Feb 08 1989 05:3510
Thanks for the ideas guys. I swapped pins 5 and 6 on the disk drive plug going
into the back of the ST (didn't even need a soldering iron as they have
push on connectors) and the disks just get a swapped drive select signal.
My new disk is chained out of the SF354. The ST now asserts what it thinks
is drive 0 on bootup but actually hits drive 1. I wish everything in life
was as simple.

Thanks again for the suggestions
