290.0. "Difference between ST models?" by ATPS::DEMERS (Killed by pirates is good.) Tue Nov 08 1988 12:24

Could someone kindly post the differences between the different
ST's in the ATARI family? I'm just trying to gather information
to decide which home computer I'd like to get. My interest lie
mostly in the Home use (word processor, finance manager, Address
lists that sort of thing that most of them seem to be able to do)
but I'd also like to dabble some in some computer graphics as well
as be able to use it to log into work from home and move files back
    and forth.

Some things I'd be interested in are:
Rough price, CPU only I know that depending on the cost
of monitor (Mono vs Color) $500-$1000
and a printer this can vary the cost greatly.

Benefit over other ST's. Expandable, keyboard nicer ,ect.

New technology or Old stuff This ones been around for years, ect.

I've look in this conference but could only seem to find the
comparison of Amiga vs. Atari, not the difference in the
family itself. Thanks, - Leo Demers

In addition to this, could someone reply with what an "STFM" is, as
opposed to an "ST" and an "STF", all of which I've seen referred to?

The following just lists the differences, not all the features:

520ST 512K RAM, external power supply, external 360K diskdrive,
            RF modulator/color composite out
1040ST 1 Meg RAM, internal 720K diskdrive, initially no RF
mod/composite but I've heard of some with it.

Mega2 2 Meg RAM, detachable keyboard, expansion slot, blitter,
internal DMA connector, internal 720K diskdrive, room
to mount an internal 3.5" harddrive
    Mega4 4 Meg RAM, same as Mega2

The Megas are the new high end STs, designed for the business market.

The 520/1040 have been going thru "rolling upgrades" where
manufacturing changes are made without coming out with a new model.
According to the comments on usenet, 1040s are hard to get, and
520s now come with a 720K internal diskdrive and room for an additional
    512K of RAM.

I believe the FM of "STFM" stands for F = internal floppy, M = RF
    modulator.

There has been a 520ST+, at least here in Germany:

520ST+ 1 Meg RAM, external power supply, external 720K diskdrive,
            no RF modulator/color composite out

Also note. I doubt you could buy new the original 520 ST. They are now
called the 520 STFM and are a 1040 with half the memory ( = 512 K). The
same motherboard, etc. They have an internal drive (was SSDD = 360K but reports
are now for an internal 720K DSDD drive). They also have the RF mod built
in. The 1040 doesn't though on the board are the etchings for it.

The 1040STFM (i.e the 1040 with RF modulator built in, along with
internal disk drive) is now freely available in the UK at least.
