279.0. "LJ250 colour printer...help!" by HOGGAR::DEIGHTON () Fri Oct 21 1988 05:57

Hi,

Our group has just acquired an LJ250 colour ink-jet printer
and I would like to try making slides with my ST. I have "old" versions
of programs like VTNEO and LANEO (used to convert .NEO files to SIXEL
for printing from a VAX).

I know VTNEO can display colour images on a colour terminal
however can LANEO convert .NEO or DEGAS format files to colour SIXEL
to print them on the LJ250?

Any help or suggested "art" programs which support HP Colour
Printer Language would be appreciated.

	Regards and thanks,
	Nigel

I am trying to achieve the same thing. Have you been successful
and if so can you let me know how you did it. Noddy proof guide
    please?

    Thanks in advance

Migraph's EasyDraw is a good drawing package. They unfortunately don't
currently have a PaintJet driver. The last time I spoke to them (~2 weeks)
they said that they had ordered a PaintJet from HP, and were awaiting its
arrival. I will post a note if I hear anything more about the availability
of a GDOS driver. Note that you could then use TimeWorks DTP, or any other
GDOS driver, to do color output.

PageStream may support the PaintJet as well, I will have to double check.

I think there are already drivers for DEGAS/Elite that will support the
paintjet, so you shouldn't have to convert to SIXEL. The problem there
is that you have to somehow get the printer driver to output to a file,
rather than the printer port. Migraph has another product called OSpooler
that is supposed to allow redirecting to a file. I actually have it, but
haven't tried getting it to work.

If I can think of everything, I will try to follow up to this note, but
my schedule is hectic, so it may take some time.

    	re: -1
Its over a year since I posted that original note......and I
still haven't printed a colour image from my ST.

I'm now locked into trying not to loose the time I invested
in more than a hundred colour UIS slides now we've moved over to
    DECwindows!

GFA draft can produce outputs for a number of types of printers
including paintjet types......but the printer is at work and my
ST is not. If I had the time I would write a small proggy to stuff
the printer output into a disk file but spare time is at a premium.

Anyone have a small program to dupicate (or divert) output to
the parallel port to a file?

    	Cheers,
    	Nigel

(GFA draft can also output HP-GL and works well with an LVP16.....I
have a program to convert HP-GL to postscript which runs on a VAX
.........now any printers/tools to support colour postscript?

    re .-1

I'm just guessing here, but have you tried changing the printer
port location in the control panel under printer setup to modem
and then just using a different computer to capture the output?

You should be able to use a computer to capture it, or even send
it directly to your remote printer. To send it to the printer,
you will need to have a modem on both ends with the end at the printer
set to silent mode and auto-answer. Then you should dial into the
modem, but don't type anything or the printer will see it. Get
out of you comm program and run the graphics program and print whatever
you want to go to the printer. Of course you will have to able
to allocate the printer for an extended period of time.

    Jim.

PS. Don't forget you must set you printer to accept input at the
    speed the modem sends it.
