267.0. "Graphics Printing ?" by SEDOAS::TAYLOR () Wed Oct 12 1988 06:48

    I'm interested in doing some Artwork (letterheadings, etc), on my
    1040, but my present printer won't perform graphics printing, just
    text.
    Can anybody offer any advice on a (low-cost, another cheapskate),
    graphics printer (available in the U.K.), preferably one that will
    give a decent text output also?

    	thanks (?),

        Depends upon how cheap you want to go. Any printer that is Epson
        compatible and will do graphics will work - such as the Star
        NL-10 that I have. It has been replaced by the NX-1000, which
        can also be purchased in color. The price is around $200.00.

        For the best printing (and graphics) at a reasonable price, I
        would suggest the HP DeskJet. The is an inkjet printer that is
        capable of 300 dpi resolution. It can be purchased for around
        $700.00 here (list is $999.00), plus the additional Epson FX-80
        emulator cartridge. It is not as fast as a Laser printer when
        printing graphics, but it is a lot cheaper.

    Not to get down a rathole, but I have an ancient LA-34 sitting here at
    the house ... tried connecting it and nothing. Is this not possible?

    BTW - what's the baud rate on the printer port?

    The "printer port" is parallel, not serial.

    The ST has one serial port and can be set to any baud rate (using
    a desk accessory or any communications program). An LA-34 probably
    runs at 300 baud, so set the serial port and start printing.

    Don't forget to set the serial port as the printer port! This can
    be done using the DA that came with the ST as well as other DAs.

267.5Assume you have a the graphics option...PRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeff LomickaWed Oct 12 1988 15:485
You should be able to print monochrome graphics on the LA34 using my
PSLA50 desk accessory. (It's in topic 9 somewhere). With what I know
now, I could even make ALT-HELP do a print screen, so drop me a line if
you make progress, and want to persue this.

re: .0

Back to subject of cheap graphics printers.

I like my NEC P2200 24pin printer. I've seen mailorder in US
from $335 to $400 and store $425-500. It does nice looking
output, both graphics and letters.
