Has anyone heard of a program that would allow an ST with modem
to communicate with FAX machines? That is, to send and recieve
images, like FAX to FAX machines do? My architectural, engineering,
and consulting clients (my non-DEC work) are getting FAX machines
at a rapid clip. At $800 on up (predictions are: below $500 within
a year) for the cheap, no frills ones, I'd rather not buy right
now. I'd much rather spend $100-200 for a solid program that would
send a text file or screen dump graphic, and recieve whatever FAX
machines put out and allow me to view it and make screen dumps of
it.
I have heard that cards are available for MS-DOS machines that
will do this. But I'm not after speed or quantity of output - once
a week for a few pages would be my in/output. I should think you'd
be able to do this in software alone, no? I'd be willing to
put up with rather slow operation - converting the input to FAXable
output, or converting FAX input to stuff I could see/print. But,
of course, the transmission speed over the phone would have to match
FAX machines.
Any programers want some venture capital? - Chris

THERE IS A PROGRAMM CALLED RADIOFAX FOR THE ST COMPUTERS.
IT WORKS TOGETHER WITH A FAX-DIGITAL KONVERTER.
YOU CAN GET IT FROM ERICH FRANKE,DK611,STEINERSTR.5,EISINGEN,WEST
GERMANY.
IT IS POSSIBLE TO RECEIVE 1FC FAX-STATIONS, TO SAVE THE PICTURES
IN NEO OR DEGAS FORMAT, AND TO MANIPULATE IT.
YOU NEED THE PROGRAMM, THE KONVERTER, AND A SHORTWAVE RADIO WITH
BFO OPTION.

re. -.1 Most FAX transmissions in the US (and elsewhere?)
use phone lines. The program I'd like would use a modem (which
I already have) as the interface between the ST and the incomming
FAX transmission, (or outgoing ASCI text file?). - Chris

I don't know if this can help but I believe there is a program called
MacFax for the Macintosh that you could run with a modem and Spectre
128. Not knowing what a fax costs, this might add up to the cost of a
real fax machine.
