| I have always wondered why it's called the 1 meg floppy when it
only holds a little over 700K in the default format. With luck
the DS drive will become the standard and software will ship in
that format. It really pisses me off when I get copy protected
software on two disks and I can't merge them onto my hard disk
or onto a single floppy.

re .0 :
Does this mean that the 1040STFM is down to 399 pounds ? Is there
a games pack with the 1040 ??
Cheers,
Derek (who wants to run memory-hungry music software)

| 1meg of raw disk space, after it's formatted (add sync bytes, sector
gaps, etc..) and one of the TOS bugs throughs away a couple of
clusters, you end up with 726,016 bytes.

| Re: .3
Those number games are really ludicrous. People really only care
about the space they can use. If it says 20 megs that's how much
useable space should be available. Otherwise, I wish they would
call it something else. I am fairly sure that when I did a show
on my hard drive it claimed to have ten megs of useable space per
partition. Maybe I was wrong.
I guess it's to much to ask for truth in computer ads. ;^)

227.6 | Sorry for the confusion on HD's | MILRAT::WALLACE | | Fri Sep 16 1988 19:07 | 10 |
| I agree with you about playing games with numbers being ludicrous,
etc..
Your also correct that when you buy a 20meg HD (SH204 etc.) you
realy get 20 meg "formated" (or there abouts). When I wrote the
note I was thinking about the HD drive specs that I have read were
the raw drive capacity is say 30meg and the formated capacity is
20meg.

| Good, I'm glad we're in agreement. Now I can also breath a sigh
of relief knowing that I do have a 20 meg hard disk and why ~700K
equals 1 meg.

No, No, No, ! As seen on the Atari stand at the Show in London :-
You can buy a 520 STFM for 299.00 ** OR **
a 520 STFM with 450 worth of games for 399.00 (different games
from the summer pack, now known as the "Special Pack").
The official price of the 1040STFM is 499.00 but I saw it for 399.00.
You can pick up a 520STFM with MByte drive for 249.00 if you wish.
I ended up buying the old Summer Pack for 349.00 (1MByte drive,
22 old games).

Yes yes yes, as seen in PCW Friday the 16th (part III :-)), as of
October the first the 520STFM will cost 299.00 and will include
a set of software worth 399.00 it will also include a double sided
drive as this is going to be the standard from now on (sorry Re
earlier replies, not 1 meg).
Regards Peter.

| Yes, but this month's PCW had an advertisment for a 520STFm with 1 Meg for 399
just as I git used to 520=1/2 meg, 1040=1 meg etc etc.
I just wished I'd waited a couple of years and bought the 520STF....at least the
mother board has space for the chips for expand to 1 meg relatively easily.

227.12 | Sometimes I'm just a little slow | MILRAT::WALLACE | | Thu Oct 06 1988 20:22 | 25 |
| Wait a mintute...if my memory serves me...
First they changed the 520 so it had a built in power supply like
the 1040.
Then they changed the mother board in the 520 so it is the same
as the 1040.
Then they changed the 520 so the built in drive was DS like the
1040.
Now they have changed the 520 so it has 1meg of ram in it (trivial
with the 1040 mother board).
That means that now the only difference between the 520 and the
1040 is that the 520 has an RF modulator and the 1040 doesn't.
So now if I want to upgrade my system I should sell my 1040 and
buy a 520? It sounds like this 1meg 520 is cheaper than a 1040 on top
of it all???
Am I missing something here folks or is Atari trying to confuse
us all?

Are you sure your not getting confused. Isn't the 1 Meg they refer
to the DISK DRIVE capacity ? Surely the 520 still has 1/2 Mb memory,
otherwise, as you say, it would be a 1040 !

227.14 | there was a 1 meg 520 | NORGE::CHAD | | Fri Oct 07 1988 08:50 | 13 |

Atari did sell 520's with 1meg RAM. At least in Germany. I saw in several
places like Kaufhof a beast called the 520 ST+, the + meaning 1 meg *RAM*.
I do believe that these were the older diskless 520 type boxes (external disk).
This was early (march -- may) 1987.
RE: upgrade
No, not a 520, but 2.5 or 4 meg RAM and a 40 meg HD for your 1040 :)
(and a multisync type monitor!!!)
