197.0. "MT C Shell won't run EMACS" by NEVADA::ANDERSEN () Mon Aug 15 1988 14:47

	I recently bought the Berkenmeyer MT C SHELL and so far I've
gotten it to do precious little for me. I wanted to edit the login
file and then create a command file to compile and link a 'C'
program but I can't get my EMACS editor to run.

	I figured that the EMACS.PRG and EMACS.RC files had to be
in some special directory but not knowing for sure which, I placed
copies in every directory in the system. No luck.

	When I get the prompt I type EMACS, this crashes the system,
leaving the undocumented error message:

	RTX Fatal Error Running: emacs.prg
	p_delete loop in exception
	PC 0002cd08  SR 2700
	State: 0484  Pri: 10  IOFLAGS 0000
	DTA: 0001e26  Drive: D Path: \USR\ROOT\
	    PID NAME CPU PRI PC STATE
	 00032608 ROOT            00:03  # 10  0002e30e  in_dos Exec_wait
	 00036cd0 emacs.prg       00:00  # 10  0002cd08  Running in_dos Pexec
	 00036f2c csh.prg         00:15  # 10  0002e308  in_dos Pexec Exec
	 00037188 IDLE            00:12  #  0  0002cf0a  Ready

	I'm reading Anderson & Anderson's book on the C Shell but I'm
so new to it and the Berkenmeyer documentation is so sparce that I am
stuck here.  Can anyone help?

197.1software under mt c shellCIMBAD::POWERSI Dream Of Wires - G. NumanMon Aug 15 1988 19:1923

         I too have "Beckemeyer"'s Mt C Shell. I think it is a fairly
    good product, but I experienced the same problems you are now having
    not much software works under it. This is mainly because the ST's
    operating system is so buggy, that a lot of software companies write
    their own workaround's. David has published on usenet, and is avail.
    from his bbs, a list of do's, and dont's when it comes to writing
    software to be able to run under MT C shell. I think even tacklebox
    ST even contains a section on do's and dont's. There is not much
    else that can be done. You will find, as you purchase more software,
    and get more PD stuff, that a lot of stuff, doesn't work at all
    with other stuff. I've gone into this in other notes, so I won't
    here. You might want to look for another version of emacs. I do
    know that mark williams c comes with an emacs editor, and mark williams
    c works under the c shell. I also know Jeff Lomicka has an emacs
    editor he has been working on, you might want to try his out.

    sorry, thats the best advice i can give

197.2Getting Emacs to work under MTPRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeff LomickaTue Aug 16 1988 01:299
It could be failing because of some things I did in the latest ST
versions of Microemacs 3.9e. Note that microemacs 3.9e to 3.9n is a
GEM program. It only looks like a TOS program.

If someone with the MT shell is willing to work with me for a few days,
we should be able to get it to work. I would very much like to see the
list of Do's and Don'ts.  There's a few tricks pulled in 3.9e or 3.9n
that would scare away most multiprocessing techniques.

         I would be glad to work with you on MT C shell, I think I told you
    the other day when I was down visiting you, that I was moving to New
    Hampshire this coming weekend, and everything is all packed right now.
    When I get settled in, and get everything all unpacked, Ill stop by
    with the info, etc.

    I have gotten ME.PRG (uEMACS) to work under the MT-C shell. My
    only complaint is that it doesn't return the screen colors back
    to what they were before it was run. I should probably try the
    GEM prefix I run the editor.

    One gotcha I encountered with ME.PRG is when I edited a file
    which was write protected. I couldn't exit the editor and no
    error message was returned.
