196.0. "HELP THAT NOVICE !!!!" by CHEFS::SHEPHERDJ () Mon Aug 15 1988 13:36

    Dear folks,

    I wonder if any of you atari buffs could explain to me in simple
    terms - or point me to somewhere I could find out - how I get
    software over the net.

    I've got a 520STFM which on which I use 1st Word, ST BASIC and games.
    While I on that, the ST BASIC that came with my machine has a lot
    of problems when you're using large arrays. Is there a better BASIC
    that anyone can recommend ? I don't want to learn a new language
    - I just want to putz around with what I know already.

    Thanks in advance...Jon

196.1Try GFA BASICTEA::PETERSDon Peters, CTS1-2/H6, 287-3742Mon Aug 15 1988 14:2819
    I found ST BASIC to be pretty bad, and was really disappointed with
    it.

    On the other hand, I bought GFA BASIC and love it. It has a rich
    set of commands and a nice interpreter. Probably one of the nicest
    features, from my point of view, is that once you have developed
    your programs in the interpreter, you can use their compiler to
    make them run faster and be standalone! Few, if any, other languages
    for the ST have this feature.

    There are many versions of BASIC for the ST available, tho. A friend
    of mine has True BASIC and likes it almost as much as GFA BASIC,
    which he also has. I believe there are several BASIC compilers out
    there.

    But in summary, I think I've read that GFA BASIC has sort of become
    the standard BASIC for the ST. At lease one ST magazine has a monthly
    column devoted to it.

196.2Downloading is in 52.3PRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeff LomickaTue Aug 16 1988 01:2315
I tried to give an introduction to uploading and downloading in note
number 52.3 of this conference. I briefly discuss the options
available for uploading and downloading, how to identify the file
formats you are likely to find, and the most common problems
encountered in the process. I also tell where some of these programs
are available for downloading, and to some extent, address the problem
that you can't get any of these files until you have a way of
downloading :-).

Other writers have added their own experiences in the same topic.

Topic 9 is supposed to be a list of software that we each keep
available for downloading, so that once the channel is open, there's
plenty of material.

    I can give you oodles of help with this and also pointers to the
    better things available on the net. I will be in your area some
    time this week. Why don't you give me a ring. DO you remember your
    old number ?
