131.0. "Rate-a-game." by PANGLS::BAILEY () Tue Jun 21 1988 17:49

I would like to start a note which collects your subjective ratings
of games for the ST. As an occasional game purchaser, this will
help identify whats worth looking at and what isn't.

The format should be a numerical rating from 1.0 to 10.0 and several
    optional explanatory sentences.

I will start with the games I have.

131.1My current arcade.PANGLS::BAILEYTue Jun 21 1988 17:5928
Time Bandit: 9.0 This game has occupied many hours of my time,
and I still find it fun. It is difficult (impossible?) to reach
the ultimate objective, but it is quite easy to significantly
      improve each time you play.

Sun Dog: 8.2 This game is really fun until the first time you
complete it, but then the excitement wears off. Graphics and
       interface are excellent.

Hard Ball: 8.7 Graphics and mechanics are smooth and detailed.
It is much more enjoyable to play another human opponent. I
wish that you could change the rosters some how.

Joust: 7.5 It LOOKS just like the arcade game, but it's not.
They cut some corners, with the performance becoming
unacceptable after about the 20th screen. Still fun, though.

Trailblazer: 4.0 I returned it because the packaging indicates
that you can play against the computer, but it is a lie. Without
an opponent, it is just another splendid ``physical'' simulation.
       Very boring.

Rings of Zilfin: 1.2 This game looks like they wrote a Commodore
PET emulator and ran the software directly. The interface and
mechanics are frightfully slow, and the graphics are unexciting.
Avoid this one like the plague.

Tau Ceti : 9.5	Excellent graphics, fast, enjoyable. Everything
is so well thought out. It's a space game featuring
			solid 3D graphics.

Ikari Warriors: 8.0 A great "commando" style game. Slows down a
little when there's a lot on the screen though.

Captain Blood : 6.0 Brilliant graphics, mind blowing sound. Gameplay
    			is pathetic.

Metro Cross : 8.0	Addictive, fast and graphically attrractive.

131.3Rating for starglider, Flight Simulator?HLDG02::VELZENWed Jun 22 1988 07:438
Just to give me a opportunity to compare the games with the games
I have; What rating do you give Starglider and Flight Simulator
I give them a 5, haven't seen a nice game yet (on any computer).

Perhaps it's a good idea to mention at which screen resolutions the
games can be played (since I have a monochrome system).

131.4What about DM?LEDS::ACCIARDII Blit, therefore I am...Wed Jun 22 1988 09:375
I'm amazed that you guys haven't mentioned Dungeon Master yet.
DM is supposedly the fastest seller in ST-dom.

131.5Midi-MazePRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeff LomickaWed Jun 22 1988 11:3422
Midi-Maze: Against the computer "4", against a worthy opponent "9".

You are a billiard ball and given a mouse's eye view of the maze. Your
job is to locate the other billiad balls and kill them.

Your opponents may be users on other Atari-ST systems. I find shooting
my friends in the back to be one of the most satisifying things I can
do with the ST.

To rate a "9", you need two or more Atari ST's wired in Midi ring
network configuration, each with a color monitor and a joystick. If
the systems are not in earshot, a pair of voice actuated communication
tranceivers (the kind you use with bicycles) would help also.

It works in Monochrome, but isn't as playable. It's too hard to tell
the billiard balls apart.

You can play against computer controlled balls of various difficulty,
but they computer controlled opponents are unimaginative, and threfore
make for a boring game. They are good target practice, so you can hone
up your skills for worthy opponents.

131.6Arkinoid, Gauntlet, Dungeon MasterTEA::PETERSDon Peters, CTS1-2/H6, 287-3742Wed Jun 22 1988 14:2318
Dungeon Master: 9.5 In the little game playing time I've had in
the past few months, I play it exclusively. Excellent
                    graphics and mouse interface.

Gauntlet: 8.0 Excellent adaptation of the arcade game. Lo-res. My
kids find it especially fun with two players. Accordingly,
I plan to buy Gauntlet II when it becomes available.

Arkinoid: 8.5 This is most everything a "breakout" game should
be. We actually found it superior to the arcade version.
Especially nice with a companion "cheat" program that
lets you start at any level and have any number of lives.

I have a number of other games, both public domain and commercial,
none of which is as good as the above. The possible one exception
is the public domain verson of Monopoly, by David Addison. But that
game was banned after copyright problems with Parker Brothers.

131.7CHEST::BADMANLaugh? I almost did.Thu Jun 23 1988 06:2110
I didn't mention Dungeon Master because I assumed that everyone
KNEW how good it was. It's the closest to a 10 yet!

But I reserve Judgement until I see Whirligig, Space Harrier, Virus
and Starglider II all of which should be released soon. Also, I
anticipate an excellent version of Elite for the ST.

131.8will add reply with kids hitlist!RDGENG::KEANEThu Jun 23 1988 07:2537
    hi,

I dont play games often (sic) but my children do. They are always
borrowing and swapping games at school, so they get through an awful
lot of them. I will list in an additional reply the rating they give
games, using as an input their interest rating, i.e. How many days use the
game gets before it ether gets returned (if borrowed) or thrown to the
back of the drawer, (if its one ive bought for them). It is quite
amazing that some of the games that I think are magnificent, with
technically brilliant sound and graphics leave them absolutely cold,
and a game with middling graphics and poor sound, but INTERESTING game
play will keep them busy for days or weeks.

One further point, I am quite broad minded about my children
reading or watching adult material on the TV, so we dont censor
them too much, (they are 12 and 14 years old). However some of the
games ? available now are very sick and extremely poor taste. The
children seem to enjoy the brutality too much!! I am referring
in particular to Predator, ( graphics depicting men torn limb from
limb, and when people are shot, a cloud of bloud bursts from their backs.)
Also the digitised sound of machine guns and screams of the dying
in Leathernecks are a bit OTT. I read with interest that the Palace
game Barbarian (sword combat) was banned in Germany for some months.
In this game, its quite charming when you give your opponnent a flying
neck Chop with your broad sword, and his head gets lopped clean off his
shoulders. The final straw, is when the little dwarf appears and
drags the body of your opponent away, punting the head off the screen
with a sicking thud as he walks across the screen. This causes the
kids to fall off their chairs in fits of laughter. Sick isnt it!
Perhaps your games rating could also include a P.G. or R rating
    as well!!

    Cheers

    Pat K.

    Hi,

I just bought a game called OIDS. It is like a cross between Lunar
Lander and Defender. It cost $20 something at Compu-club. The
best things about it are: The graphics are excellent, the game
play is arcade-like and it is challenging. The game is
copy-protected, aren't most, but you can't engage write protect
which I feel is a serious fault.

Rating 8.5, would have been higher if you didn't have to risk the
    disk every time you play.

I've never been all that interested in computer games, but there
is one game I have to hide so it doesn't waste all my time -
good ol' Major Motion. There is something really appealing about
driving the way I wish I could in real life! For me, it's a ten.

What scores would you give these games ?

I have a NEW one to add to the list. Got it this weekend and it's
one of the most frustrating and addictive games I've ever played.

It gets an 8.5 (would have been a 9 but there is a bug in the
calculation of the high score tables).

    It's called Bionic Commando ...

5 levels of frantic action with you (the bionic commando) and your
bionic, extendable, arm tring to infiltrate the base of an evil
computer that intends to launch deadly missiles any day now!

You use your arm to climb upward and swing across chasms. The levels
include the dead forest, the castle, the sewers, the base and the
silo. Your opponents are fast and vicious.

    This game is excellent.

131.14Bubble ghost, Hagar, GunshipRDGE44::ADAMSThu Jul 28 1988 07:2825
Just a few more to add:

    Bubble ghost : 8

A very original game with no death, guns, bombs, bad language, or
sex. You are a small ghost that blows bubbles around a maze. There
are fans which blow you in a certain direction and man other hazards,
    a realy nice change.

    Hagar the Barbarian : 9

Mega graphics, Brilliant sound, weird controls, a graphics adventure
    style, side on view game.

    Gunship : 9

You are flying the Apache attack helecopter and go around shooting
things, like Tomahawk if anyone here has played that, but with gunship,
the graphics are solid and better, the sound is better, the flight
handling is better, the true armaments are better. But best of all it
is all real, you are set proper missions, go up ranks, get medals,
and the forces you meet are real too, M1's, BMP's, SA 9's.
    Another good one from microprose.

I spend a little time playing games on the ST, and here are my ratings
    :

Dungeon Master 9 : The graphics ! The gameplay ! If you like FRPGs
    this is for you !

Virus 6 : Amazing graphics (though the original Archimedes blows
it away) but gameplay is a little limited (and its very hard)

Buggy Boy 8 : Basic (not BASIC :-) graphics, but tremendous gameplay,
this really is a lot of fun, and must be the best driving game on
    the ST.

Captain Blood 5 : Graphics and sound are quite stunning, but the
    gameplay .....

Major Motion 9 : Oh such fun, still one of my favourite games, and
    now available on PD.

Bards Tale 8.5 : excellent, similar mould to Dungeon Master. Definatley
worth buying if you like this sort of game.

Star Trek 4 : Oh dear, yet another one with impressive sound and
graphics but which is SO boring it makes you cry.

Barbarian (Psygnosis) 7 : I enjoyed this one (my first ST game),
    its fun !

Bubble Bobble 6.5 : a slight, basic game, but addictive never the
    less.

Lurking Horror 8 : (running un PC-Ditto) Classic Infocom adventure

Space Harrier 9 : Oh boy. The graphics on this are so FAST. And
what is more it has addictive gameplay. If you are into VERY hectic
arcade blow-em-ups this is the tops for the ST.

Gunship 7.5 : Depressingly jingoistic scenario, but a lot of fun
    to play.

Gauntlet 8 : A lot of fun, especially in two-player mode. Okay
graphics, and I love the (limited) sound effects.

Mercenary 1 : My copy was bugged so that the space craft blew up
after about 10 minutes real time. I didn't bother getting a replacement
    because I hated the game.

Ultima III 8 : Great FRPG, limited (ie IBM CGA-type) graphics, but
a lot of fun once you get into it.

Sentinel 7 : I have only played the original BBC-Micro version,
but that was a very original and addictive game, and the ST version
is meant to be almost identical.

Xenon 8.5 : A really fine vertical scrolling shoot-em-up. Extremely
hard though (has anyone got far into the second sector ?)

Universal Military Simulator 7 : A very good wargame, but with some
    limitations

Pandora 5 : Disapointing implementation of a promising game. Why
did they not include a save game ????

Starglider 6 : A bit long in the tooth now, but still a classic.
I am waiting for Starglider II with bated breath.

The Pawn 7 : I enjoyed this (and have nearly finished it) a lot.
    Yep, a good one.

Leaderboard 8 : Apart from the dongle protection scheme (what a
stupid idea, it really kills my mouse port) this is IT if you want
    a golf-simulation.

    10th.Frame 6 : As above, but for ten-pin bowling.

Defender of the Crown 7.5 : I think this is much under-rated. Great
graphics and I loved playing it (though once you work out how to
win it quickly looses its appeal).

There are many others, but (a) I have forgotten which I have
and (b) you are no doubt bored rigid with me anyway.

A last thought - forget whether it has good graphics and/or
sound. Go for GAMEPLAY only in your choice of games !

131.16great, what about non-real-time gamesDELNI::GOLDSTEINCailles en sarcophage: Duke's feastFri Sep 09 1988 18:1813
This is great info! Now a specific question.

What are good games that do NOT play in real-time? While most of
the videogames are real-time and thus command your undivided attention,
some of us older folks (who grew up on tty computer games) like
non-real time interactive games. Graphics are still nice.

The briefly-freeware Monopoly was one such game, as are card game
simulations, etc. But Ultima III, for example, goes into realtime
mode during melee and in its wandering monsters. I suspect most
of the other aforementioned games are at least as animated. Any
    suggestions?

131.18ELITE MINDER::GILBERTNorth UK Region Appl'n Centre @MCOTue Nov 01 1988 03:5827

Elite (nothing to do with Degas) is a translation of a classic game
originally released for the dear old Acorn BBC Micro. It achieved
cult status on that machine, and the ST version is even more addictive.

Elite combines 3-D flight simulation, zap 'em up, trading and an
    element of adventure/puzzle solving.

Supplied are a comprehensive pilot's manual, a quick reference sheet
and a single disk. Published by Firebird @ 24.95 pounds (!).
Runs on any colour system, uses any combination of
mouse/keyboard/joystick. I recommend joystick for flying, mouse for
    menus etc whilst docked.

For ex-BBC users, amongst the improvements are: more colours,
solid 3-D objects instead of wire frame, much faster & smoother
graphics, landing (by docking computer) very quick, no overlay
loading delays, a couple of new items of equipment and cargoes.

One minor irritation - the disk can be backed up, but the
"copy protection" scheme involves quoting a word from a randomly
selected page in the manual when you first load it.

My rating? 9.97 out of 10!

Whats wrong with that? I would much rather have that type of protection
as it allows me to backup my own copy and still gives a degree of
    protection to the 'casual' pirate.

As for the game, I totally agree with you. At last I can go asteroid
mining which I couldn't on the BBC version (no asteroids).

Another vote for Elite - this game really does deserve to be called
a classic. I've played the BBC, Commodore 64 and now the ST versions,
and they are all good games in their own right. The ST version has the
best graphics (not surprisingly), and plays faster than the C64.

If there's enough interest in this game I'll start a new topic to
cover such burning questions as :-

    Are there any tribbles ??

What are the best tactics ??

Anyone found any bugs ?? (as opposed to tribbles :-)

Anyone been sent on any of the missions yet ??

How many ships are not listed in the manual, and what are they ??

Off to try to stop being "harmless",

Great flight simulation. You take the role of a pilot of an F16.
Various missions and levels. Good graphics, sound, gameplay etc..
Very realistic. The best plane simulation on the market for the
    ST. 9 out of 10.

One game that I seem to be having a good time with, and didn't see
them mentioned. The trilogy from SSI Phantasie. I still have not
completed Phantasie, Phantasie 2, and The Wrath of Nickademus
(Phantasie 3) I have had many an enjoyable night with these games.
Basically role playing games with good graphics. Each game has a
different task to complete. The character generation and hidden
dungeon sceens are a hit with me. Each game has improved with time.
I can't wait to see if SSI brings out more sequals to these. I rate
    them all a 9.0

Please use this note to recommend games to other users etc...

First I would like to say what a good game FALCON is. Falcon is
a flight simulator that puts you in control of an F16 Fighting Falcon,
the plane used by the USA as a multi role combat aircraft.
The game starts with the user naming his/her pilot and chosing
a mission to undertake, there are different levels and mission's the
easiest being the Milk Run (the pilot must destroy two practice
buildings) and the higher the level the harder the plane is to control
    etc...
The graphics are very good giving the user views from the cockpit,
a control tower, a satalite and a tracker plane ,from this view
you can circle the plane and from the others you can zoom in and
out. You can also look behind ,and round the cockpit.

The sound is not bad for the ST with the engine noise the most
predominant feature (this tends to get on your nerves after awhile
although i can be turned off )

There is also a training feature within the program allowing you
    to perfect various moves.

    Buy it!!!

    Falcon is good, I agree.

Pacland is a good game to relax to. Simple but pleasant scrolling
background, good music. Basically platform & ladders but very well
    disguised!

Incredible Shrinking Sphere is an excellent game. Guide a marble
through a 3d maze (viewed from above and at an angle). Many obstacles
and puzzles; each maze is on four levels, so you find yourself having
to thread up and down the levels to get to your destination. Physical
    attributes of the ball change when you roll it over special squares;
it's size and density change. This means that it can only take certain
routes depending on its make-up at the time.

    Very addictive.

Finally I would recommend Galdregons Domain to any Dungeon Master
fans. A similar game (though not as good; nothing could be) but
    played in a complete world; you travel overland into different regions;
towers, woods, castles, labyrinths, temples etc.

A good filler while FTL write their sequel to DM (which I understand
    is to be in space!).

Another comment on FALCON... you can connect via modem and play against
another ST or a Mac or Amiga. I hear that 2400 baud response is fairly
slow, but if you can make a null modem cable and connect at 19.2 or
    better it's a real scream.

Try Battlehawks 1942. It's done by Lucasfilms, the same guys who
did ballblazer and fractalus on the 8 bits. It's a pacific war combat
simulator that it unbelievably realistic and playable. I tried Falcon
at the store and thought it sucked, too much attention to detail
and not enough on the play mechanics. Battlehawks is one of the
best. I like it better than DM. I bet it edges out DM for the top
    spot.

Another release that will compete with DM for the top spot is just
out; POPULOUS. I bought it on saturday and have been staring at
my monitor ever since. I've got a headache but I don't care! It's
    worth it ...

POPULOUS (By Bullfrog, distributed by EA) allows you to become a
God. You represent Good in a 3D world that you watch over. The computer
(or opponent if you link up another ST or Amiga) is Evil. The objective
is to wipe out the opponents followers. Followers multiply at a
rate determined by the size and complexity of the settlements that
they build. There are two types of followers; Walkers - who search
for fresh ground and then build, and Knights who hunt down the enemy
and destroy them and their settlements. Depending on how many followers
you have, your Manna increases and you are able to moderate the
world; change the landscape, create volcanoes, earthquakes, floods
and other nice things like that!

It's really hard to convey the spirit of the game without a screenshot.
There are 500 worlds to battle on and a customization option as
    well.

The graphics are amazing. The 3D effect that they give make Virus
look silly. The little followers can be watched as they build their
homes and roam the countryside. If you destroy their homes, they'll
look up to you and shake their fists ...

There's so much detail and depth.

    I'd rate it as a 10/10.

BTW ... Galdregons domain is by Pandora.

This has to be the alltime definative great game for the St.

    Move over Dungeon Master!!

My kids have played Populous for many, many, hours since we got it.
(I must admit to having a few goes, once I have prised the kids away
from the machine and to bed.)
I find this game, which can last for hours much more satisfying than the
five second life I always last on a shoot-em-up.
(There is a save game option on Populous, so its not too bad to get the
    kids to quit)
My son's friend is bringing his ST over on Saturday, we are going to
link up with a null modem cable and play two player mode. ( You can
play over the modems to remote machines, there is a full hayes
protocall autodial etc built into Populous !!!!)

It is very addictive, once you understand the philosphy of play. It is
a combination of the old EMPIRE game plus LIFE plus a very good graphic
    rendition.
The early levels are easy to play, but after level four, (theres 500
then you can design your own), the bad side starts fighting back and
distroys your lands with a few volcanos, earthquakes and swamps of their
own. Just as you think you have aced it, you are back to primitive state
    again.

Has anyone seen a monster yet ?

Is this game available to you colonial settlers?

The TM leaves a trail of swamp and the wizard just destroys anything

The testicle monster first appeared on about level 90 and the wizard
popped up around 120 (Up to level 141 at the moment and still going

Build a null modem cable. Cross pins 2 and 3, that is all there is to it.

Make a small one that fits on to the end of a regular cable and use the
regular cable for straight through and null-modem capabilities.

I was under the impression that this is the way to build a null
    modem cable :

    2 -> 3       Transmit to Receive
    3 -> 2	 Receive to Transmit
4,5 -> 8 RTS looped back to CTS and passed through to DCD
    6 -> 20	 DSR to DTR
    7 -> 7       Ground
    8 -> 4,5
    20 -> 6

I tried getting the bits for this in basingstoke, but no-one had
    an actual CABLE !!!

I've now decided to just BUY a ready made cable to save hassles
etc. I just don't know where to get one from !!!

Hello All - just like to have my say about Mirrorsoft/Holobyte's
FALCON simulator/game. It is brilliant and fully reflects the
ten man years that went into its production and '.. should be in
    your collection...'.

I had a dogfight with an Amiga owner last night (via serial cable
at 19200) and I really enjoyed getting target lock on him (watch them
squirm as the threat warning comes on!).
The only let down is that the Amiga owner has a far huskier voiced
    woman saying 'caution'......

Is this the same Falcon Spectrum Holobyte puts out for the IBM PC ported to
the Atari? There is also a hi-res (640x350 and 16 colors) version for the
IBM called Falcon-AT. If it is the same one I can second the recommendation

It's got really impressive graphics and animation and some of the

It plays a totally crap game of chess though.

    Hi,

I just got Zany Golf. It is a mouse controlled game sort of like
miniture golf except that the obstacles are moving. The manual,
typical for most games is sparse to say the least. The Graphics
in the holes I have been able to play so far are good and the obstacles
show a good sense of humor. Note that in the line above I say holes
I have been able to play, this points out what is in my mind the
most serious flaw of the game. You have to stay within 2 or 3 strokes
of par to continue playing and as a result I have only been able
to make it to hole 5! So, I have to say while it is a good game,
    the playabilty is poor.

131.43Annals of Rome RecommendedIOSG::HAYESJThu Jul 20 1989 13:0319
For those of you who like strategy games I can heartily recommend
Annals of Rome by CSS. It is a superb game in which you run the Roman
Empire by allocating your forces and staff across the 'known World' of
    the time.

The historical accuracy is superb, with the various warring factions
arriving and declining at the right times and withe the right sort of
strengths. Within this, your goal is to run the Empire as well as you
can. Rebellions, uprising etc occur if you don't keep your eyes on the
right things like the age of your emporor and loyalties of your
    generals with big armies.

I could go on. The use of the ST is diabolical, being a multi machine
game with the Spectrum as its lowest common denominator by the looks of
it. Having said that, I have played it for hundreds of hours and so
have all the people I have introduced it to. That ought to speak for
    itself.

131.45Leaderboard or Jack Nicklaus GolfWARDER::HARTRTue Nov 07 1989 04:5020
I have played Leaderboard extensively on the Atari. I tend to play
the Tournament Version which has more difficult courses. Even playing
professional which is the most difficult ability level, I find it
possible to achieve some very good scores.

I like the game, as do my children, but I would wish for courses
which were more realistic. I am trying to get a copy of Jack Nicklaus
Golf as this offers real courses and the ability to play match play
    which Leaderboard does not.

A word of caution the product called World Class Leaderboard and
available at a budget price is in fact the original Leaderboard
and offers less of a challenge than the Tournament Leaderboard.

I think you should wait until there is some evidence about the
comparative merits of Jack Nicklaus Golf and Tournament Leaderboard
which is the de facto standard currently.

I hope that this helps you.

I've just bought a game called LASER SQUAD. Apparently it's an old
    game on the 8-bit machines.

    It's really good.

You control a squad of highly trained troops. You have so many credits
with which to buy armour and weaponry for them and then you can
embark on a mission. There are five scenarios - assasination, escape
from the mines, moonbase, defense and paradise valley (can't remember
all the names exactly!). You deploy your men and they have allocated
a number of action points which allow them to move, turn, open doors,
fire etc. Once you have moved all your men, the computer moves the
opponents. You can only see an opponent if they are in the field
of vision of one of your men. If a man has more than 1/2 of his
AP's left at the end of his turn he has "opportunity fire" during
the opponents move; if he spots an opponent he has a chance to fire.

There are no arcade elements - it's pure strategy - and it's very
    addictive.

    I recommend it highly.

Interphase is a cyberpunk type of game. You have access to the
Dreamcorp computer - Dreamcorp is a company which produces dreamtapes
    - devices which let you dream other peoples dreams. Your girlfriend
is trying to break into Dreamcorp HQ to steal a dreamtape assisted
    by yourself.

Through the computer you can study blueprints of the current floor
(12 in all), zoom in and out to see more detail, navigate to certain
items in the plan (for example a locked door) and then enter the
Dreamcorp computer (a 3-D surreal world) to hunt out the selected
device. When you find it you can dock with it (to perform an action
with it) or shoot it! The 3D world is by far the most impressive
on the ST - realistically shaded perspective, light source solid
3D - everything is shaded!!! This gives far more depth (and far
    more colours!).

Some of the "creatures" in the 3D world are : Unicycling frogs,
starglider-type birds (only far more detailed and graceful) and
    helicopters!

The 3D bit gives you a shoot-em-up side to the game and the blueprint
section provides you with some great puzzles - I played it for some
hours on the weekend; levels 1 & 2 didn't take long, level 3 took
me ages to figure out but when it came to me it seemed obvious in
retrospect. Level 4 is my current level. This level is different
in that the previous 3 level required thought to solve. This one
requires you to hurtle through the 3D world like a bat out of hell
to open all of the doors for your girlfriend before the guard droids
catch her! VERY frantic - I've got within one door but the level
still eludes me!!! Luckily, you can save you game to disk once you
    complete a level.

I recommend this game - it has a bit of everything and the graphics
    put starglider 2 to shame.

Finally, the company (ImageWorks) must have developed some kind
of fast load routine - the load screen comes up within 3 seconds
of the game being booted and it includes a rotating cube complete
    with shading!

The whole game loads in under 15 seconds! There are no further disk
accesses after this. I don't know how they've done it but I'm glad
    they have!

    I would give it a 6. But then I am a role-playing Mega-2 person.

    ULITMA 4 gets a 10. DM gets a 10.

Can anyone comment on SIM CITY? I looked at it but can't decide.

This has been pretty dead for a while so time for a few more brief
    reviews :

Speedball 2 by the bitmap brothers...

I got a worse blister from holding my joystick playing this game than I
did from playing speedball 1! (ooo errr!)

THAT'S how good it is! The pitch is double the size and the animation
of the players is fantastic. The gameplay is much improved too. I have
a criticism about the save game feature though; you can only save a
game every four matches or so in the league option. When I got into the
first dvision (after many hours of hard play!) I had to play two
matches before saving the game... and these were disasterous! And so I
have to re-win the last two matches of division 2 every time I want to
play my division 1 matches again! Not too much of a gripe, but a fault
    nonetheless!

That aside it's a great game and VERY addictive!

The Immortal is an isometric 3d RPG a bit like a sparse Cadaver, I
    suppose!

The grpahics and animation are great and the gameplay is good but the
inability to restart a game where you last died on a level makes it a
total pain. In fact in the case of this game I'd say it makes it
virtually unplayable unless enjoyment is to be sacrificed! And
enjoyment's what playing games is about, right ?!!!

You want a good 3d isometric RPG go for Cadaver every time. I'm not
sure there's going to be a better one... until the sequel, which I read
    was definity happening!

Is it really that good ? I tried the demo on ST Format a while back and
couldn't really get into it like I could DM.

Does it run as fast as DM ?
131.59Captive is good!BRUMMY::LOXTONMon Jan 14 1991 10:1317
    	re -.1

Yes,it is really that good,it runs faster than dungeon master. The
demo with ST Format is only a taster.
The game is huge,I have no idea how many planets you can visit, but
each one has multiple levels.I'm on the fifth planet.
You start with four robots,(2 Tindroid and 2 Human).as they fight
they gain experience so they can use bigger and better weapons. When you
kill something you get an amount of gold with which you can buy
weapons, spare parts for the robots,or special devices. You can also buy
better parts for the robots to make them stronger. When a robot part is
damaged you need to pay to have it repaired.

It's not quite as good as DM but nearly,it's the only game that
comes close, and I prefer it to Chaos strikes back.

    Silent Service II 8/10
Not a million miles apart from the original, but the graphics have
greatly improved. You now have the chance to have a complete war record
starting in 1941. Digitised real Jap ships add to the affect.

    Team Suzuki 3-4/10
Not worth the disk is presented on. Too much attention to being able to
watch from camera positions and very very difficult and limited riding
style. RVF Honda romps all over this.

    Microprose Golf 10/10
Bloody incredible. It literally is so well designed it makes
Leaderboard look like a ZX81 calculator game. You get handicaps,
tounemants, medals, varying camera positions, the chance to save your
best shots, sand bunkers, streams, lakes, trees and all with incredible
graphics. I play this a lot and have dropped my handicap to 5. If
anyone needs some hints mail me.

    Team Yankee 8.5/10
Command 4 tanks divisions on varying missions. Very good graphics and
    reasonably addictive.

    I bought Railroad Tycoon:-

Very addictive: I spent many an early hour and all of Christmas day
92 playing it: NB! I did stop to eat Christmas dinner and fill the
    glass.

I also bought Microprose Grand Prix:-

This see's even more action that Railroad Tycoon. Goes without
saying that I like it. The graphics alone are a sight to behold. You
can stop the action mid race and review the last 20 seconds from an in
car camera outside car from front or rear and even from a varying
trackide array of camera's that give the feel of watching a real GP on
the TV. I would love to see an American version based on the Indycar
series now that Nige has seeded our interest.

    Hi,
I've just joined the conference and notice the number of notes
tailing off dramatically recently, is the ST dying. Anyway for what
it's worth here are my top ten ST games in no particular order:

Dungeon Master, Populous II, F-19 Stealth Fighter, Secret of Monkey
Island, Street Fighter II, Railroad Tycoon, Lure of The Temptress,
Sensible Soccer, Civilization and Speedball 2.

I reckon all these games rate at least 8/10.

    				Cheers Kenny

You say Street Fighter II is one of the top 10? *Ick*!

#1 of all time, Sensible Soccer, got to like Wings of Death, Lethal
    Xcess, Dungeon Master I & 2, Volfied ....

And yes, the ST is dying, and in the emergency room.

I THINK ATARI ARE ALMOST DEAD!
THEIR JAGUAR GAMES CONSOLE IS TO BE MADE BY IBM I THINK.
THE FALCON IS A SUPERB MACHINE,BUT AS IT RUNS ONLY VERY SIMPLE
ST SOFTWARE(NO SOUND OR GRAPHICS ALLOWED!) PROSPECTIVE BUYERS WILL
PROBABLY GO FOR A 486 PC.

    I'VE HAD A COUPLE OF ST'S. AT PRESENT IT'S A 520STE WITH 4 MEG IN
IT'S MOSTLY USED TO RUN CUBASE V2.0.BUT DOUBLES AS A GAMES MACHINE.

MY FAVORITE GAMES OF ALL TIME ARE AS FOLLOWS......

    1.	MICROPROSE FORMULA ONE.
This is the best thing you will ever buy for your ST!
The grapics, though blocky, move accurately as you change view
perspective. Also on a standard ST they are very jerky, especially
on full detail,on min detail it's bettter, and as you tend to look
into the "distance" it becomes less noticable as your attention is
diverted onto more urgent things ,like trying to get past that damm
mc laren without hitting it! The sound is generated rather than
sampled but is reasonable nontheless. The gameplay is unreasonably
good. I've been playing it for 2 years, and though It may go
temporarily go out of fashion I allways return to it.
The ony drawback is that when you learn all the circuits intimately
and get good at it ,you have to start finding ways to make it
harder to win.As the only circuit you can't usually outqualify and
win at is Hockenheim, The second chicane is an absolute BXXTARD!
sooner or later you WILL hit the wall on the inside!
I am at present running "A"tyres in the race, with 55% wings
ands starting from the back of the grid 33% race distance.
and still I can just win the championship...
131.66KNIGHTS OF THE SKY42708::ROWEMThu Oct 14 1993 15:0714
ALSO MICROPROSE "KNIGHTS OF THE SKY" THOUGH A BIT JERKY,IS A JOLLY GOOD
    FLY.
IF YOU GET TO AROUND 17,000 ft and wait for the Hun,they will
eventually go vertical for a couple of thousand ft,then hang
motionless in the sky for a couple of mins, while you gratefully
    see them off!~
stick to a fast plane when offered the choice,as you can outturn
anythiong in the least manouverable one,but will not be able to
safely run for home unless you have an SE5 or SPAD13 or similar.
Even on level one (of 5) I have not yet been able to complete
WW1 past the begining of 1918,I don't take the "RESURECT PILOT"
option as this seems a bit of a cheat.

There is a game coming out now for the PC which will be better then
World Circuit by Microprose it is called IndyCar Racing and should be
out around the end of Nov or early Dec. It's better then the Microprose
game, believe it or not...and yes Nigel is in it!
