Ok, I gave up and went back to a DF03 to ask those of you who have succeeded in using a DF224 modem with UNITERM to let me know how you did it. I get as far as getting ATTACHED but then garbage follows. Is the setup the same (except for the baud rate of course), what about flow control, 8 or 7 bits, parity? I'm calling MR01 from Vermont if that makes a difference. What am I doing wrong?

Check the setup (% command) in the DF224 to make sure you're selecting the correct protocol.
110.2 | It's a fickle modem | PRNSYS::LOMICKAJ | Jeff Lomicka | Thu Jun 02 1988 11:16 | 13 |
I now use a DF224 with no problems. When it was new I had to replaces it every three months until I finally got one that worked. The symptoms you report are the same as others I've heard for other flakey DF224's. It may not like your local telephone exchange, or the long distance wires. I will report, however, that I routinely call from Maynard to a BBoard in Lafayette, Indiana with the DF224 at 2400 baud, and get en error free link. Does it work any better with "Whack" or with a real terminal? I would suggest borrowing a different DF224 unit to see if the one you have is bad.
110.3 | Impulse noise - I had the same problem. | DYO780::SCHAFER | Brad - DTN 433-2408 | Thu Jun 02 1988 15:57 | 14 |
I had (have) a DF224 that was real flakey when used at my house, but fine from the local office. Turns out that our loca phones (at home) are post-WW2 pbx (or something along those lines) and there is a great deal of "impulse noise", which is different than line noise. The latter results in garbage on the screen randomly. The former results in not only screen garbage (at the inital connection) but also an inability of the modem to clock properly. It gets confused and drops the link. Note that a DF03 that I also had works fine. Good luck. -b
110.4 | df224 don't work | BOEHM::REILLY | Michael Reilly | Mon Jun 06 1988 14:06 | 8 |
The df224 is notorious for not working on many of the phone lines in this area. All of the non-DEC 2400 baud modems I have used work without problems so the problems are df224 specific. (I bought one of them so as to be able to use 2400 baud.) Look in the modems notes file for all of the gory detail. mike |
