This is a well written description of GEM's workings, with
various sample programs to help you see it all fit together.

Note that the chip specs are mostly photocopied from technical manuals.
All of the documentation is 3-hole punched.
In general, the documentation is poorly put together, mine came
as a stack of 3-hole punched paper (printed on both sides). There
is a lot of reference material, if you can sort it out. The newer
SALAD document was actually bound and looked reasonable.

| Here's what I have:
- Mark Williams C for the Atari ST reference manual, 4th printing.
Includes information on XBIOS, BIOS, GEMDOS, VDI, and AES, translated
from the original developers kit. Once concise volume, unclassified
and sorted alphabetically by routine name. (A format that you either
love or hate. I love it.)
- The series of Antic's Compuserve articles on Atari-ST GEM
programming by Tim Oren, with examples. I have this series on-line in
PRNSYS::DUA1:[LOMICKAJ.HOBBY.ST.GEMTUTOR]*.*. This is how I learned how
to create windows, adjust the window sliders, and respond to redraw
events. It also talks a lot about resources files.
- General Instrument Programmable Sound Generator Data Manual. The
original hardware manual for the AY-3-8910/8912. I got it from a
General Instrument salesman several years before the Atari was made,
but it also comes stapled to the back of the bubble pack when you buy
this part from Radio Shack. (Yes, you can buy the Atari sound chip at
Radio Shack, it's usually on sale for about $7.69).

Comment:
This book is a reference manual to the whole ST. The first part
consist on a functional overview of BIOS, XBIOS, GEMDOS, VDI, AES
and A-line. I think they cover pretty much all available functions.
The second part is the Hardware reference guide. All IC's are
discussed, internal registers ect. Also some information about the
DMA bus and protocol is in the book.
Thb book is quite good, the only minus is that it is written
in German. But maybe there will be an English version available.
