| In your previous note, you mentioned that you can get a little 2-inch
wide screen dump. This tells me that the printer accepts the same
bitmap format as the regular Epson printers.
I use a 24-pin Toshiba printer. (I'm working on some great software
for it, by the way. I'm already up to printing text files in old
English fonts and script fonts and stuff like that.) I have written
programs and desk accessories that can print a portion of the screen
and scale the bitmaps up to a reasonable size, but the Toshiba printer
does not accept the same format as the regular Epson printers. For
various reasons, I will be soon writing code that dumps bitmaps in
Epson protocol, and will retain all of the abilities to scale up the
bitmaps when I do so. I would then be able to easily provide you with
a desk accessory that could drive your printer.
HOWEVER, assuming that I get around to it, I don't think this will help
you, because if I understand you correctly, you said that you already
had a desk accessory that could do this for you, and what you needed
was something that would hook into the ALT-HELP key, which does
print-screen functions even when the desk accessories are inaccessible.
(By the way, I've been getting by just fine without ALT-HELP working.)
As of yet, I have not been able to get definitive documentation on how
to splice my own application into the ALT-HELP print screen function.
If somebody knows how to do this, I would really like to know, so that
I could write a driver for my Toshiba printer's bitmap format, and
would then be in a good position to solve Jan's problem as well.

Start magazine had an article written by Tom Hudson on installing
a new print screen routine which can be started by alt help. The
issue is the premier issue summer 1986. He then in a later issue
wrote a program which can be used to construct a printer driver
for just about any printer, you just answer questions about your
printer, and it builds one for you. This was the spring 1987 issue.

| Some more info:
the desk utility I use is called snapshot, it came with 1-word plus.
Snapshot takes a snapshot of (a portion of) the screen, and saves
this in DEGAS, DOODLE, or NEO format . So to print the screen I
then must start DEGAS, load the picture file and print.
So I am still interested in a desk utility that will print my screen
directly.
The only thing that makes the screendump worthless is that the printer
will not perform a normal line-feed after each printed line, but
performs a line-feed which is about 6 times smaller.
For some programs like games, or basic I still need the alt-help
combination, I now know were to find the info (in the start magazine
of summer 1986), but I still can't get it.
Does anybody know if you still can get this copy from antic?
(I sure hope so, but I don't think so)
Or is there someone out there who could copy this and perhaps other
articles (in the old note file I read that that first issue was
full of interesting stuff).
Oops, I just remember that I will need the disk too (and I haven't
got a modem!).
So if someone could send my a copy of the article and a disk with
the program, I will send him/her lots of money!!!!!!!!!

| Finally got my screendump routine for my NEC P2200.
It's a PD utitity for NEC P5,P6,P7 24-pin printers, but it is also
working with my P2200.
The routine is made by NEC Germany, I got it from one of the PD-groups
here in Holland.
The program must be executed once, it then is placed in RAM.
At execution the type of printer is asked (P5,P6,P7);
then the resolution is asked 180 dpi (faster) or 360 dpi;
then there is a choise for portret or landscape !
and last and not least the width of the screendump can be chosen !
, so you can get small or large screendumps.
These settings can only be entered once, to alter them you have
to reboot (but I can live with that).
I can't upload the program (haven't got a modem), but if someone
is interested I can send them a disk (or check out your local PD
group).

track down Jan-Willem Velzen and I can't access the filespec given
by Ray Wallace in 55.6. Can anyone help me get hold of this program?

START MAGAZINE CEASES PUBLICATION

After days of conflicting rumors, it was confirmed by START Magazine
staff members today that the bi-monthly Atari magazine START will NOT
publish another issue until further notice.
"STart has suspended publication pending a sale of the magazine," said
Editor in Chief Tom Byron. A sale is said to be in the works with
unidentified parties, and no timetable is being discussed publicly.
Byron also said that the next issue, the June/July edition, is complete
and was waiting for printing when he got the news today that the
suspension was in effect.
The resolution of the fates of subscribers and the many writers to whom
STart has owed moneys dating back to mid 1990 is not known or
predictable at this point. If STart is sold, it may be that those owed
will be paid from the revenues, or the new owner may assume the
liabilities of the company. A third possibility is that there would be
a liquidation and sale of assets held by STart itself, which may be
negligible.
Z*Net will continue to follow this story which is of great concern to
the entire Atari community. STart is the last commercial "slick"
magazine for the Atari in the U.S.A. It will leave behind only Atari
Explorer, Atari's owned house magazine, and newspaper-type publications
like AtariUser and ST INFORMER.
Look for followup on the STart story in Z*NET #91-21, this weekend on
telecommunication services and bulletin boards world-wide.

| Wow, I knew it was coming but I didn't think it would be so soon. Too bad as
Start was *the* premier ST publication in its day and long since has been the
only glossy rag for Atari users in this country. It looks like I was probably
the last writer for Start to get paid (Crossword Creator, June 1990 issue)!
While the British mags are OK, they have been very game oriented and besides, we
need our *own* US magazine. Lets hope AtariUser becomes a sure fire success and
ST Informer and ST World (US) continue to grow and improve.
