44.0. "Cheapo Monitor Switch?" by VINO::BHAMILTON (Buzz Hamilton) Tue Apr 19 1988 13:35

I have an SM124 monochrome monitor. I use the RF output for color programs.
The monitor jack might not hold up to constant insertion/removal. I know that
Practical Solutions makes a monitor master box which would solve the problem,
but it costs about $50.

Can I put a small SPST switch in the SM124 case to break the MONOCHROME DETECT
line where it terminates inside the monitor. Heaven knows I don't want to pull
apart the 13 pin connector.

You would have to ohm it out to make sure it makes it all the way
back. They may have grounded it inside the connector, which means
you would be out of luck.

Grounding it makes the ST assume monochrome. Just breaking the
connection should suffice to cause the rez-change.

44.2It can be done !!RDGENG::KEANEWed Apr 20 1988 05:0015

Re the monchrome detect line and switching it.

I have installed a "floating" toggle switch in series with the
monochrome detect line. when it is open ie I am using the colur
modulator o/p (loqw and med rez) the mono monitor growls a bit with
lack of sync, so its best to power it down, but apart from that
it works well. I pulled the cover back from the 13 pin plug, slid
two thin wires from the switch down inside the cable grommet. Pulled
the red wire off the detect pin (they are push on in my plug) connectes
one switch wire to the empty pin and the other to the red wire.
Taped it all up and re-assembled the plug.

Time spent 20 minutes, saving 40 bucks !!
