37.0. "How do I select medium res?" by HJUXB::HASLOCK (Nigel Haslock @ Manalapan,NJ) Thu Apr 14 1988 10:53

    How do I persuade medium res programs to run? What magic step did
    I miss seeing in the manuals?

37.1Perhaps let us in on a few more symptomsPRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeff LomickaThu Apr 14 1988 11:4116
Is this a trick question, or do you not know that there is an options
menu in the desktop that allows you to choose your screen resolution as
one of low-res or medium-res? (assuming you have a color monitor
attached). When you make the selection the system reboots.

If this is a trick question, then I figure you must have made your own
connector, and accidently asserted the mono/color pin on the monitor
connector to ground, which tells the system a monochrome monitor is
attached.

If none of that works, perhaps your ST isn't set up for driving a PAL
monitor? How DO you tell the Atari to drive PAL anyway? Did you get it
in the U.S.?

37.2use the menuMAST::WALLACEThu Apr 14 1988 11:4410
    Go to the rightmost menu on the menu bar and click on "set preferences"
    which will give you a dialog box, click on "medium", the ST will
    then do a reset and bring you back to the desktop in medium res.

    If you then save the desktop (another menu option) your ST will
    always power up in medium resolution.

    NOTE: This only works if you are using a color monitor.

37.3I hate to have to tell you this. . .AKOV11::KINGAs you light your cigarette from the burning deckFri Apr 15 1988 04:039
    If you have to use the RF jack on the unit (RF converter to
    Television), then GEM will not allow you to switch to medium
    resolution. From what I have seen of ST's hooked up to Televisions,
    this is not a bad thing as the screen is not very readable in low
    resolution, and I would think medium would be unreadable. If you
    are using the monitor jack (19(?) pin connector) then you should
    be able to go to medium rez as described above.

    Certainly not true of my old 520 ST before I sold it. The ST has
    no idea about a color monitor being attached other than the
    monochrome detect line not being pulled low.

    An ST and RF WILL work in medium rez (although it is not too great).
    At least my old 520 STM did, and there are no signals on the monitor
    pinouts to lead me to believe otherwise.

    Appears I was misinformed by those doing training.

    Did not have Technical expertise to go through circuit diagrams,
    etc to confirm statement.

    Stand, er sit corrected.
37.6Best of both worlds?SEDOAS::TAYLORThu Apr 21 1988 09:3817
    Talking about resolutions, I 'converted' my 1040 by adding a seven
    pin din socket, connecting the RGB & Sync lines from the internals,
    so that I could drive a colour TV, with RGB input. The Atari 'Helpline'
    in London helped with the sync mixing (2 x 470 ohm then 1 x 220
    ohm resistors), so now I can use my TV as a Monitor, and the kids
    can watch the cartoons.
    The resolution in 'LOW' is outstanding (T.V. is Hitachi, 14" screen),
    and perfectly readable in 'MEDIUM', though I still need to play
    around with some resistors on the colour lines to get a better focus.
    To be honest, I've seen Atari colour monitors with worse resolution.
    However, my colleague uses a 1040 with a modulator, and the resolution
    is crap!
    I've seen other methods of connection (different value resistors,
    etc), but this one works for me!
    Nice chattin'
