36.0. "Does the OS do dynamic memory allocation?" by BOLT::BAILEY (Steph Bailey) Wed Apr 13 1988 13:40
Does anybody know where the GEM desktop and the AESFile selector
get their memory for the file name object tree?
Specifically, if I open subdirectory on the desk top, that subdirectory
could potentially have an infinite number of file names, all of
which seem to be read into memory and sorted.
Is the buffer into which these names are read static, or dynamically
allocated?
More globally, I am wondering whether I am justified in Malloc'ing
all availible memory for my application (I'll give it back when
I'm done) or if this will cause something in the OS to break. The
only hitch of which I could think, a priori, is the file name buffer
for the file selector...
Any insights?
Steph
