|
I guess I'll go first. I am Bill Powers, and I work in Hudson
MA, in the CIM technology development group.
my system consists of:
Atari 1040st
color monitor
sh204 hard disk
navarone clock card
tandy dmp150 printer
casio cz230s synthesizer
1200 baud modem - name escapes me right now
I mainly use my atari as a terminal, and I like to write little
hacks for it.
The languages I use are
Mark williams C
OSS Personal Pascal
Absoft Fortran 77
I also have beckenmeyers MT C shell, but it doesn't work with my
pascal, or my fortran, in that case, i use the msh shell which
comes with mark williams c.

| That's me:
my name is Hans Kaiser.
I'm working in a project unit in SWAS Stuttgart/Germany
mainly with the VIA products.
Since two weeks I'm proud owner of a Mega ST 2.
Before that I had a 520+ (that means 1MB memory)
My printer is an Epson FX85.
No hard disk (yet?)
I use my machine (mmh...) mainly for text processing,
some applications (spreadsheets for my stock depot,...)
and some little hacks sometimes with XLISP, but mainly with Pascal.
I only bought ST Pascal+ (same as OSS Personal Pascal) and GFA Basic.
All my other programs (how many? I don't know) are public domain, most
of them from the E-Net. My favourite SW is:
- WHACK (thanks, Jeff)
- SEDT (thanks, Anker)
- ST Pascal+
- Gulam Shell with VC and XLISP

(Does someone know of any other PD spreadsheet than VC?)

| I have a 1040STf (What is that 'f' for?) with a Supra 20Mb hard
disk, QMI DeskCart clock/desk accessory cartridge, and a Yamaha
FB01 for musical purposes.
I'm still acquiring software, PD stuff rapidly and commercial stuff
as I can afford it. I have GFA Basic and Degas Elite and will probably
wait for V3 of MWC before getting a C compiler (I love C and need/want
a fairly serious compiler.) I also have Music Studio, Dr. T's Midi
recording studio, and Hybrid Arts Genpatch ST patch librarian.
I intend to learn a lot about how this system works and fool with
some system level programming as well utility type hacks. For fun
I use it to play games or music.

Hello,
My name is Jason Flowers and I work at the Customer Support
Centre in England.
I have a bog standard 520STfm that I have owned for 6 days. I bought
it mainly because of the high standard of the MIDI interface and
also because after some research I decided that it sounded well
made, powerful and had a lot of add-ons and software. Quite how
much I am just begining to grasp.
As for favourite software, as yet I have nothing but the freebie
games supplied when I bought it, however there does seem to be some
software on the network.....now if I can just work out how to get
it on to a floppy and run it in my system........
Jason.
PS. What is the ***BEST*** MIDI/Sequencer package currently available???

Hello
I'me Paul Kent and am an Atari user thanks to the coersion and support
of our new moderator Steph !.
I am basically a musician who required some method of disk storage
for a midi studio usind a dedicated hardware sequencer. A standaone
midi disk file would have cost me about 350 pounds (I'me in th U.K.)
as it was the 1040 plus mono monitor cost me 490 plus I got all
the extra functionality and i now find the system indispensible.
I use it for pretty much everything in the data storage and
documentation area. A note of thanks to Steph for his MidiBulkdump
program which got me started out. Most of the stuff I use is PD
however I have bought GFA basic which in it's compiled form seems
to run fast enough to capture a midi sysex dump. I have the Steinberg
editors for DX7 and FB synths and a sound editor for the Akai S700
sampler. Sorry if this is boring to you non-midiots. I would be
interested in swapping notes and software with any other midi studio
onwner on usage and general bits and pieces.
Paul.

13.7 | I'll introduce myself here. | PRNSYS::LOMICKAJ | Jeff Lomicka | Wed Apr 06 1988 12:16 | 39 |
| Hi. At DEC, I have a history of being a designer of video terminal
firmware and general insigator of video terminal related concepts.
I bought the Atari-ST when I was looking for a "memory upgrade" for my
PDT-11/150. I wanted something I could use to write useful programs
that anybody could use. Since a few of my friends were already into
Atari, it was a natural choice. There was also another motive: having
been frustrated by the inability of DEC to make a terminal like
"Whack", I bought my first 1040 and wrote Whack to prove the point.
You see, "Whack" is a working model of the kind of terminal I wanted to
have at home, and represents the kind of device that I think Digital
should be selling instead of VT330/VT340. (I have since quit the
Terminal's group. I haven't accepted a new position yet, but am
expecting an offer soon to work on semi-custom IC's in Hudson, MA.)
My configuration currently consists of a network of two 1040's. My
system is a Monochrome 1040STf (the "f" is for "floppy") with Z-Time
installed, configured with a Toshiba P321 24-pin printer, SH204 hard
disk, and I use a VR242 prototype when I need color. My spouse's
system is a stock 1040stf with the stock color monitor. Each is
configured with an Epyx Joystick and are networked with Midi.
For software:
I do all of my development work with Mark Williams C. I've been
Beta testing their "CSD" source level debugger and their
resource editor.
I trashed Mark Williams Microemacs in favor of the 3.9 varient
from Dan Lawrence.
I am a big fan of the David Chiquelin hard disk Backup program.
The second system is used for yarn inventory control using some
custom software I wrote. I'm also into weaving CAD, document
preperation, and last but not least, MIDI-MAZE! (Wanna get shot
in the back?)

I like playing good shoot em up games (no brain work involved),
and also am into desktop publishing (if I only had the printer),
I am also a Radio ham and I am writing a RTTY program for the ST
but am having difficulty interfacing new technology with old ie

The software that I write is virtually all MIDI related, even though
that is not the only application I find for my system. Some day
soon, I will make one or more of these programs available for general

as which sequencer is best etc.
Keep having fun !

13.22 | hello, and how do I make a proper screendump? | HLDG02::VELZEN | | Thu Apr 14 1988 08:48 | 48 |
| I am Jan-Willem van Velzen, student , with a practical asignment
at Information Services, Utrecht.
I was planning to buy a XT, but several people persuaded me to
buy an atari instead, and till now I have no regrets doing this.
Since 2 months I have:
Atari 1040stf
monochrome monitor
NEC P2200 24-pin printer
40 disks with software
Things I use most are:
1-word (It has corrupted 2 documents !, so I plan to use Wordperfect
if this happens one more time; Has anyone had the same experience?).
some of the drawing programs : degas, easydraw, campus!.
I also have PC-ditto, this works fine with programs I copied from
a IBM with a 3.5 inch drive.
What happens if I connect a 5.25 inch drive to the atari as drive B,
how does the OS react, does it see that this drive is 360K etc.?
How do I connect a standard drive (5.25 or 3.5) to the ST:
-Can the ST supply enough power, or must the drive have its own
supply.
-Which signals should be buffered or/and inverted.
-Are there other things necessary?
Is there someone out there who has tied a normal hard disk (IBM)
to his ST, how did he do that ??? (Atari 20 MB HD costs me f1200,-
10 MB IBM-compatible HD costs me less than f500,- )
I'm also looking for good magazines, and books on the ST, who has
any suggestions?
Finally: Who has solved the screen-dump problem (on my printer a
screendump is only some 4 centimeters (less than 2 inches) long.
With most programs I can make a screendump, using the snapshot.acc
tool, but this isn't always possible.
Greetings from a Sunny Holland (exuse me for my bad english??)

hi,
my name is hermann mueller,i'm 14 years with dec and thoose days
working in the telefon support center in munich, germany.
i support (still) rt-11 for germany,micropower/pascal for europe
and start to support vaxeln. you see i'm in realtime.
i own a 1040stf since a couple of days,played a little with different
sw i've received from friends (we are at least 30 st (dec)users in munich)
and ordered modula 2 yesterday.(the new magamax modula)
i want to use modula only.
the "producer" of this product resides in munich and so i had the
chance to "see" the product.
what convinced me is the fact, that the compiler and the standard
library is about 5 years old!(originally written for a 68000 system
called gepard)
so its pritty much bugfree.
it comes with a nice shell, editor and debugger, the compiler is a
1pass compiler,it compiled the 1450 line editor with a speed of
200 lines per second on a harddisk.imagin a ramdisk!one can keep
the compiler and editor resident in memory,a 300k ramdisk is sufficient
transfer and iotransfer are supported.
docu looked good to me.
the kit is DM 398.-
my actual hobby is building and flying radio controlled helicopters,
but due to little "machanical abilities",i work together with 2
mechanics(non dec),and i concentrate on getting some microprocessor
intelligence into the chopper. rpm control ect.
so the first piece of sw i'll write is a
"host-micro-remote-environment"
in other words a remote debugger.
befor i bought the st, i used a pdp11 with rt-11 and omsi pascal
and my target cpu is a hitachi cmos microcomputer, which includes a
uart, parallel port, some ram and the best timer i've ever seen.
should i find a comparable timer in a chip,i will consider to
move to a 68000 as a target processor.as far as i know,there is
a cmos 68000 available. there's not much power in a model plane.
should someone read this, and being interested in what i'm doing
("remote development" and/or modula ,please let me know.
regards,
hermann

I have on order now Mastertracks Pro from Passport.
My main interest is Midi and I hope to get a D-50 and a S-550 soon
but I haven't completely decided on what equipment I would like
to get first.

13.34 | that'me: markus ruggiero | BERN01::RUGGIERO | | Wed Jun 01 1988 05:25 | 29 |
| Hello,
my name is Markus Ruggiero, and I am with DEC since Jan 88 (DECollege
Trainee SWAS in Bern/Switzerland).
I started with an Apple 2e with CP/M 2.2, then upgraded my system
with the ALS CP/M plus (V3) card.
Now I have a Mega 2 ST with monochrome monitor and Epson LQ500 printer.
Software: STPascal +
Profimat Assembler/debugger
Flexdisk (the flexible, resetproof, bootable,
reconfigurable...ramdisk)
Uniterm
Templmon
Aladin Macintosh Emulator (the best thing I've ever seen!)
CP/M Emulator
PCDitto
***NO GAMES***
My interests are mainly in 68000 assembler, systemprogramming, learning
about the internals of operating systems (TOS/GEM brrr..., Mac wowwww!)
(just to be shure you don't misunderstand me: I love the machine,
I love the processor, I love the programs, but please don't talk about
that bloody OS called TOS).
I use my Atari as a terminal to my Apple (have you ever seen such
a nice screen on that (still great ol') machine?

13.35 | The ST and Graphics | GEMVAX::KEENE | | Thu Jun 02 1988 15:27 | 31 |
| This is Rick Keene and I'm a graphic designer. I have an upgraded
520ST with a Z-Time chip, Astra 20 meg hard drive with a built in
double sided floppy, one each of a color and mono monitor, Okimate
20 color printer, Apple Laser Writer, and a Packard Bell 2400 modem.
The software I use:
Degas Elite
Aegis Animator
Make-It-Move
Publishing Partner
Spectrum 512
NeoChrome
Cad 3D2
Easy Draw with Supercharger
Music Studio
Advanced Art Studio
Color and Mono Computer Eyes
Tektronic Stereo Glasses
I use my ST primarily for graphic design and some desktop
publishing. I have designed illustrations for various magazines
including internal and cover illustrations for ST-Log. I'm beta
testing Publishing Partner Professional and I've developed some
3-D slides for Digital Vision. I also have designed several clip-art
disks for the Atari to be used with Publishing Partner and Aegis
Animator.
As you can see, I think the Atari is the perfect machine for graphics
and animation and I'd recommend checking it out before spending
a lot of money for something else.

13.36 | Another European. | IJSAPL::KDEVRIES | Kees de Vries | Tue Jun 14 1988 03:40 | 20 |
| My name is Kees de Vries working for SWAS Utrecht in Holland.
Since a couple of weeks I have got a 520STM.
It's main use is: family game computer. (My kids love it)
The reason for purchase is that the previous family game machine (ZK Spectrum)
went in smoke is damaged beyond any repair.
My family wanted me to buy another ZX Spectrum, but I decided that for a litle
bit more money you can buy much better machines today.
It seems that my decision was right...
I use a Sony KV1440 color TV set as monitor.
Currently I do not have real programming plans because programming
is part of my daily job already.

13.38 | Is Monochrome better? | FRACTL::HEERMANCE | In Stereo Where Available | Mon Jul 11 1988 13:16 | 27 |
| Hello,
I'm Martin Heermance, I own the following hardware:
1040ST
Color Monitor
Avatex 1200hc modem
Star NX-10 printer
I just ordered an ICD FA20ST hard drive.
The following is the software I use most frequently:
Personal Pascal
1ST Word and Thunder
MI-TERM and Uniterm
Spectrum view program
XLISP
I got disgusted with my ST about six months ago and refused to touch it.
I have recently relented and decided that maybe having a hard drive and
a more consistent system will make me feel better. My major use is as
an end user. I use Uniterm and 1ST Word. I also use Personal Pascal.
I have written a few GEM based applications but I get pissed off at my
ST each time I do it. I have been thinking of buying a monochrome
tube.

13.40 | an old timer ST STyle | TENERE::DEIGHTON | | Tue Jul 12 1988 18:32 | 42 |
| Hi,
I guess I finally should introduce my system and myself,
I've worked for Digital for 4 and a bit years, first in Annecy and
now in Valbonne.
I bought one of the first ST system's in France back in Oct 1985
before the disk based TOS had figured out that European TVs and US TVs use
different frequencies ... the first program I wrote patched the video location!
I have an almost standard 520ST with SF354 (one that reads all the
tracks) and an SM124 monochrome monitor......the only reason I chose mono
was that colour cost a lot more than the FF15000 I paid three years ago!
Main (almost only) program is UNITERM, use SEDT very often (but
then I used it on VAX and Rainbow for a year or two before! Thanks Anker!
what about making the VAX version use the full Vaxstation screen length
or am I way out of date?).
Play the odd game and get very annoyed that most games are colour
only. When I get time (ie ten years after the ST is obsolete if my experience
with my old Dragon (6809E based...not the wife) is anything to go by) I will
start adding functionality in hardware terms. Right now MICRO SYSTEMES a french
magazine is running an article on how to add a super GLUE function to enable
access to the 11.5Mbytes of memory that the GLUE chip gives you a buss error
on (you guessed it when the address is outside normal ST limits disable the
buss error inducing signal from the GLUE chip and do some work yourself.....
as a bye product one gets some expansion slots and the chance to improve
on Atari case design!).
I'd also like to use the ST for titling videos of the offspring but
then I knew I should have waited three years and bought an Amiga 2000 for
a slightly more money.
Since I bought the ST about 8 other people I know have also done so
with Uniterm (and I suspect WHACK though I never got the system manager to
install the VAX part!) and a monochrome monitor it makes a good home terminal
and could make a good small computer if the Tramiels gave some real support.
Regards,
Nigel

| Hi there fellow atariites,
I have just discovered "CHECK IN HERE" (great idea!!!) and since
I have recently become a proud parent I thought I'd do just that.
By the way, I've never written a NOTES reply before, so if this
ends up in Timbuktu... don't blame me.
And now to my baby... ...(pride)
Not a strapping system, just the ST Summer Pack from Silica which
is :
1. An Atari 520STFM
2. A built in 1 meg disk-drive
3. Loadsa games
Additionally, and incidently one of the factors that swayed my
persuasion in Atari's favour, I have a Yamaha DX27 synth and an
RX15 drum machine... groovy midi stuff.
If this configuration sounds vaguely familiar, you may well have
been reading a note or two that Jason Flowers has been entering
into NOTES. He and I are friends and trying to learn all we can
about the ST.
I myself work in the CSC (Basingstoke) and support that much maligned
product VAXDSM. I joined DEC just about one year ago and am still
enjoying myself immensely.
By the way, if you don't hear any more from me for a little while
it won't mean I've gone away, but am busy reading all the existing
entires in the ATARI notesfile.
Nice to know I have so many fellow enthusiasts out there though
please bear with me if any of my questions appear REALLY stoopid.
This is my first micro and being a proud father doesn't mean I know
how to change nappies.
Best regards to you all,
Jonathan

Hi,

> 1) describe your system
Atari 52STFM+mono monitor+1Meg upgrade+ds external floppy.
> 2) tell what you use it primarily for
Mainly for logging into work and messing about with various
languages.
> 3) what software packages you use (languages, etc...)
Uniterm, Lattice C, Pascal 2, XLISP, GULAM shell, Arkanoid,
Terrorpods.
Arkanoid is nice but Terrorpods is far too complicated to play
(for me anyway).
> 4) anything else you think might be interesting
I'll probably be interested in the MINIX-ST when it comes along

13.43 | If I had a 1Mb extension ... | PTILOU::ANGENOT | | Tue Jul 19 1988 12:50 | 15 |
| I am Eric ANGENOT from TAEC in VALBONNE where I worked as a software
engineer. I am in DIGITAL since 9 months now.
My system is an atari 520 STF ( I plan to extend it to 1Mb), with
a SM124 monochrome monitor and a 1200 bauds modem.
My favourite softwares are VIP, UNITERM, 1st WORD, SEDT, FSII, GAUNTLET.
I 've got others I do not use so often : XLISP, DEGAS ELITE, GFA
BASIC, MJC compiler and
many PD softwares.
I'd like very much to use image analysis software like AIM but
it seems I need a 1Mb extension.

Well, I've been in read only in here for quite a while, so I'd better
check in:
My name is Bruce May, and I serve a very important function in this
notesfile, I am probably the dumbest person (computerwise) in here.
8^). (You are all probably thinking I am making a joke about
myself, well my next remark will remove any doubts) I am a sales
rep in the Santa Clara, Cal. office. Don't you all feel better
now? When you have to ask a question that you may be afraid is
dumb, you can be assured that there is someone in here who not only
doesn't think it is dumb, but may not even understand it! 8^)
Slightly more seriously:
I own a 1040ST with a color monitor. I (actually we) bought it
for my wife who is going back to school, and needed something to
do word processing on (1st Word, which, having sold word processing
equipment a couple of previous lives before, I'm not that thrilled
with, but the price is right). My wife also is considering doing
some accounting for some small businesses, so we purchased DAC.
I plan (once I figure this Whack and down line loading stuff out-
sometime in the early 90's I think) on using it to be able to dial
into our system here and read All in 1 (I bet THAT impresses everyone
in here! :^) ), although its not so much fun using it through
the VT52 emulator that comes with the system. :^(
Finally, I want to thank everyone in here who contributors to the
conference. I sorta feel like a leech, as I don't know what I can
add besides some comic relief when I recant my tales of woe as I
chart my path towards being a real 'hacker'. 8^)

My name is Paul Harriman, and I work for the IM&T group for the
Burlington VT manufacturing plant. I've had my ST for over a year
and hadn't had the time or inclination to do anything with it other
than MIDI stuff (it normally lives in my studio), but in the last month
I've done some major upgrading and integrating of the thing with the
rest of my computer collection.
Current hardware setup is:
Atari 1040 STf w/color monitor (and I like the color btw)
Supra 30 meg harddisk
Supra 2400 baud modem
Star NX1000 printer
(this in addition to an XT clone in another room, plus other assorted
pieces of hardware).
Primary use: MIDI controlling. It works in the studio mostly, although
I think I'll let it come out and do other things like animation now.
Software:
Dr T's KCS Level II, and Copyist 1.6
Tom Hudson's Cyber Studio (CAD3D-2.2,CyberControl,Spectrum512,Cybermate)
Smoothtalker
FS II
The usual assortment of Language Disk stuff
and a bunch of PD toys
FLASH!/SHADOW
Bulkdump V4
Midimax
WHACK, now
You will probably not hear a lot from me in this conference for a while
as I have to wade through 2000+ notes since I chose to be a latecomer.

I will be able to copy PD sw and start using my ST for more mind
taxing purposes.
( I'm still, however an avid games player... the more action the
better)

My name's Les Carleton based at CSC (Ultrix Support) at Viables
in Basingstoke (UK for those that don't know). My system is a 520STFM

I don't use it as much as I used to but am having my interest rekindled
by the conf. Fave games ... Tetris and Elite of course!

| This is Eric Osborne, Columbus, Ohio Sales Support.
I have :
520ST (OLD one, just after TOS became available in ROM)
ICD disk interface with 1 ST225N & 1 Quantum Q250 (about 70
megs)
SC1224 Monitor (one of the old Panasonics)
1 SS & 1 DS (which I changed the mechanism in myself) floppy
Cermetek 212A modem
Epson printer
I have some other, Non-Atari hardware also. I use the ST for word
processing a lot (1st Word, Word Perfect on order). I also have
OS/9 professional for it. I haven't written any TOS code yet, but
I am considering hacking together a driver for a SCSI tape drive
off the ICD adapter. I'll likely do it under OS/9 first - I understand
OS/9 better. As soon as I get time I intend to port some OS/9 utilities
which can read IBM/ST diskettes to the ST under OS/9.

My 13 year old son got a 1040ST for Christmas - one 3.5" diskette, two
joysticks, colour monitor, 20 games disks.
The Atari is for games use only at the moment - I have an IBM clone for
business use, including remote login to my VAX at work.
That's all I know at the moment - the sales rep who sold it assured me
it could run MS-DOS, but I cannot see how - I will continue reading
this conference for hints.

Robin.

My system is a 1040ST with a blitter upgrade and a upgrade for 4MB
I'm still working on (should be finished over the weekend)
- RD53 with BMS100/Adaptek Controller/Interface
- two TEAC 3 1/2'' drives and one BASF 40/80 Track 5 1/4'' drive
- Atari Mono Monitor, Amiga Color Monitor
- Nec P6 printer and additional 64kB printer buffer
- video digitizer for inputs and RGB/video converter for the VCR
I have my computer built in a PC-style case with a standalone keyboard.
My use for the computer is text processing and a lot of graphics.
I make the entries for my video-8 movies with it also. Smaller
applications for my own use I mainly do in GfA-Basic.
I'm always looking for hardware upgrades on the way to my personal
"Super-Atari" (if all of them make sense is another question, it's
my hobby...)

Hi, I'm Rich Hearn and I've purchased Carl Lewis' (.15) system
along with the "additions" he (and a few others) had that I was
lucky enough to get.

Hello fellow ST'ers.
Here is a list of the hardware and software I currently have:
HARDWARE: color 1040ST
SOFTWARE: DEGAS
NEOchrome
VIP professional
MEGAblit
STwriter
1st Word
Printmaster
Monopoly
<<< ==============================================================>>>
In addition, Carl also had PC Ditto
5.25 IB Drive
Mouse Master (Switch)
MS Dos 3.2
AsEasyAs
NEOdesk 2.0
More stuff than I can remember, but the above is a sample.
I've also got a Seagate 277N (used; and Host Adapter & controller -
thanks to Bob Pomeroy :^) on the way, along with the Dr T's KCS
and Documentation (used - courtesy Evan Holzwasser :^)
I see my Daughter (college) probably wanting to play games more
than anything else :^) , My wife, possibly using the AsEasyAs
for work related items, and myself using the MIDI aspects.
I have to admitt - after a "weekend" of "playing around" with it;
I DON'T understand why the ATARI 1040STf is not THE standard in
"home" computing. Me? biased? NAW - no way! :^)

13.75 | Lewis Bishop @FYO | RUTILE::BISHOP | | Thu Jun 20 1991 08:42 | 45 |
| I dont' think i've signed in yet, so here goes :-
My name is Lewis Bishop and i'm working in the Data Centre in Ferney-Voltaire,
France on a contract operations position. I've been here now for, oohh about
1 years and i've just had my contract extended again until December.
I started off buying my ST in 1986 when they first became available in the
UK, and used it just for games.
Now, i've built it up a bit, and although i still play games on it, i'm also
playing with the graphics and sound capabilities of it.
Hardware consists of :-
- 520STFM upgrade to 2mb (so far it's a *very* unstable upgrade)
with TOS UK v1.2.
- 1mb external floppy.
- Atari SH205 20mb Hard disk.
- Atari SC1425 Colour Monitor.
- Star LC10 Colour printer.
- Frontier Forget-Me-Clock II.
- Rombo VidiST and VidiRGB.
Software side of things :-
- Whack.
- Loads of PD from the net. Including Alchemie which i want to play
around on when i borrow a friends D5 Synth but i've had to wait
until i got more memory.
- *Loads* of games, especially old ones, but the only ones used at
the moment are Ultima IV/V and AD&D.
- VidiChrome to run VidiST and VidiRGB.
- 1st Word Plus to type out personal letters etc.
- Good Backup Utlility which i still have to get using.
- A few graphical packages (Quantum and NeoChrome), and a couple of
DTP's which i still have to play around with.
- NeoDesk v3.01. Great - i love this.
Due to the 2mb upgrade i have not had the ST up and running much recently...
time to make it a stable upgrade i think! ;-)
Regards,
Lewis.

13.76 | I may even become an STe convert yet | NWACES::PHILLIPS | | Fri Oct 11 1991 11:24 | 19 |
| I have very recently purchased an STe 11040 for my kids, 4 1/2 and
9 years old, because they they were pounding my PC clone to death.
I also had to get them going when ever they needed to use it because
of the unfriendlyness of the user interface. Well I also have a hard
time passing up anything with a MIDI interface (that's another story).
I am going to use a TV for now, before making the decsion of getting
a multisync monitor or a monochrome and a TV (I don't care too much for
the two monitor configuration plus I really don't have a spare color TV
but....).
I intended to learn as much about this computer as I can through this
conference and appreciate all the help and would like to publicly thank
Jeffrey Lomicka for all the help he has already given to me so far.
Errol
(Can't wait to get some MIDI software on that baby.)

13.78 | Hello !!! | FUTURS::LLOYDN | | Thu Feb 27 1992 04:46 | 69 |
|
Ok,
I guess I should have introduced myself by now, so I'll do it now.
I am Nick Lloyd working in the Solent Business Park (UK) on TOLAS,
as a contractor.
The setup at home is as follows :
ATARI 520STE upgraded to 1 meg then 4 meg
ICD 100meg Hard Drive
Second Floppy
Colour Monitor (Phillips)
Mono Monitor (Atari)
Hand Scanner
Tracker Ball (instead of mouse)
A Citizen 24 pin Printer and a Heap of junk from Olivette that tries to
be a 9 bin
Good old joystick for the serious work !!!!
Software ....
Lattice C V5.0 - good interpeter, and complier no complaints
GFA BASIC V3.0 - as above, haven't used to much
HiSoft DEVPAC Assembler - God Knows Assembler ????
Logistic SpreadSheet - Ok for the accounts, never used graphics
DIGICalc - Load of rubbish
Wordup - good GDOS word processor
1st Wordplus - everyone knows about this
Superbase - Nice professional looking interface
Spetrum 512 - Paint program good colours horrid interface
Neochrome - Staid
Canvas - Came free haven't really used
Cyber suit of progs - Getting this today so cann't comment
Calamus - Might get delivered someday soon
Thats all or most of the games listed I've got loads more but I don't
really use them.
Serious software....!!!
MIDWINTER - Why don't all companies put as much effort into their
software. Especially so called serious companies.
Xenon 1 & 2 - Good fun blast those aliens, same as above.
Bombjack - Keeps many a vistor happy and the other arf.
A tank sim. M4 or somthing - Only ever get blowen up, cann't find or
see enemy.
I could go until next week but I'll stop.
I don't actually use the beast to much but the other arf, does a lot of
freelance, graphic design, desktop publishing and all that so it's her
baby really. And hence all the question about PC format and graphics.
One other comment is why oh why cann't Atari get of their butts and
distribute their products. Has anyone seen used a TT I wanted one but
with the lack of response and real quality software Apple here we come.
Many thanks to all that have replied to my inane questions.

| Hello,
my name is Peter Eckel, I'm working as a system manager for a software
project in Sprendlingen, Germany.
I use a former Mega ST1, upgraded to 4 MB and a 68020/16 MHz processor,
HD floppy and fast serial line (57600 Baud). Hard disks are two Conner
CP30100 (same as DEC RZ23L) with 120 MB each connected to an ICD host
adaptor. My modem is a ZyXEL U1496, soon to be extended to a line speed
of 19200 bps (currently 16800).
I'm using the Atari for C program development, as a terminal for a VAX,
and as an offline reader for Mailbox communication with the german
"Mausnet" (internet domain .maus.de).
My interests are in hard- and software, the next step will be an upgrade
to 68030/32 MHz w/Cache and two additional serial lines to accomplish
communication with the modem and two VAX ports withot switching. Maybe
some day I'll increase the main memory, too.
regards, Peter.

Dear All.
I'm Martin Rowe (matt for short)
I work in the VMS CSC in Warrington. U.K
I have a 520STE with 4MEG in. an ATARI hi-res mono monitor,
colour is via a monitor input to a telly.
Printer is an EPSON Stylus 800 (360,360 dpi Ink jet)
I use it mostly for recording sequences for my band on CUBASE V2.0
and printing out parts on the Epson.
I spend an unreasonable amount of time playing games, mostly
simulator type things.
Favourite prog is Microprose Formula One. To which I have been
hopelessly addicted for a couple of years now!
Also run Microprose Knights of The Sky to satisfy the urge to kill..
And occasionally MIG 29.
I don't do any programming or owt like that, It's more for fun
and music than anything else.

Well, there hasn't been an entry in here for a while, so
I thought that maybe I should drop one in.
My name is James Dawson, I work in the CSC in Basingstoke, as
an I.T. I recently sold my STFM with a thought of getting a
falcon, however cash proved a problem, (namely a lack of it!).
Instead I bought an STE with 2M, TOS 2.06, and very little else,
I kept all my previous disk boxes, and am now looking at getting
a hard drive & keyboard (which can still be used with a Falcon).
As far as usage goes, not a lot of late, but it varies from
sampling, and mucking around with animation to a bit a
programming here and there, along with a fair smattering of
Frontier, Sensible Soccer, & F1GP.
My latest fad is trying to get MiNT/Minix running on a twin-
floppy based system. Two word spring to mind... IT WON'T!
James.
