| Try CURIE::SEDT, there is one particular topic on wishlist items
if you would like to add some. There are a lot of people who will
offer general hints. If you really want a particular feature, just
send some money Anker's way and I am sure he will give it priority
(it worked for me).

11.3 | Help with SEDT | GLIDE::FONTAINE | | Fri Jan 20 1989 14:06 | 13 |
| Has anybody gotten the current version of SEDT to work on the ST.
I downloaded SEDTST.ARC and transfered the files to my ST. SEDT.TOS
(or .TTP. I forget) runs on the ST but I'm not able to do anything
with it. None of the Gold key sequences are recognized and I am
not able to even exit the program without rebooting. The GSEDT.PRG
program also does the same thing. Both programs complain about no
ruler file but the documentation only tells you how to create one
once you are in the program and there isn't one that comes with
the ARC file. Am I missing something. By the way, I do have STKEY.EDT
and STHLP.EDT in the current directory.

RE: < Note 11.3 by GLIDE::FONTAINE >
I use sedt on my st, when working under tos. I do have an older version
though. I also invoke mine from the command line, from various shells (MW
shell, and PCOMMAND) all I do is in their various startup files, I set an
environment variable sedt=c:\sedt\ and it just works.

Andre, did you rename the STKEY and the STHLP files to .TXT extension?
These files are found by means of the environment variable SEDT
(see Bill's hint in .4). With the GSEDT, STKEY.TXT and STHLP.TXT
has to be in the current (GSEDT-) directory.
Ruler message is just a warning.

11.7 | Still no Go | GLIDE::FONTAINE | | Thu Jan 26 1989 11:52 | 9 |
| I renamed the STKEY and STHLP files to a .TXT extension and still
no go. I am running them from GEM DESKTOP on a one floppy system
so I assume that it can find the files no problem. The program still
does not respond to any key sequences and I must reboot to get out.
Typeing straight ASCII characters results in them being displayed
on line one but it will not accept carrage return to enter the
next line. Any more typeing just results in characters being added
to line one. The cursor control keys (arrows) do not move the cursor.

I will try to figure out this weekend what might be going on. But
first, could you answer a few questions on your setup.
1) Where on the net did you get your arced copy of sedt from?
2) What kind of machine are you running (memory,etc)?
3) What desk accessories are you using?
4) When you run SEDT from the desktop, what files are in the
current directory, and what files from the archive are
elsewhere?
With this info, I will try to reproduce your problem. SEDT is
a good solid product (with much thanks to Anker).

Bottom line - You MUST have Ruler0.txt before SEDT will work on
the ST.
I have a 520STfm with 1 disk drive and both GEM and TTP versions
of SEDT work fine. Without Ruler0.txt neither work at all.

11.10 | Ahaaaaa | GLIDE::FONTAINE | | Fri Jan 27 1989 10:15 | 13 |
| Ahaaaaaa. Thanks Bob. A previous note stated that the ruler message
was simply a warning. What your saying is a bit contrary. If the
case is that you really do need a ruler0.txt, then the question(s)
is why isn't there one in the arc file and how do I get one. While
we're on the subject, what did the program do when you tried to
run it without the ruler0.txt. If it had my symptoms (program looks
ok but does not respond to key sequences) then that is def. my problem.
In response to note -2. I have 1meg, 1 floppy, no DA's, monochrome.
The arc was copied from jeff lomicka's system. I also copied an
arc from Anker's system and did a diff on the two. Both were identical.
Thanks to everybody who has responded.

Andre,
I made my on arc files and downline loaded them. The ruler0.txt
can be the same one that is used on the VAX (mine is), ohwever it
must be converted when you move it to the ST. Arc it downline
load it, de-arc it and it will be fine.
SEDT has weak error handling for default files missing. I don't
remember what happened off-hand when I tried it without the
Ruler0.txt, other than the function keys wouldn't work at all.
When it is setup on the ST, it is a great editor. The limitation
being the ST's keyboard.

That turns out not to be the case.
I *never* run with RULER0.TXT, and SEDT (both GEM and shell versions)
work just fine for me. I get a dialog box that says 'Can't find
RULER0.TXT', I click 'OK' and proceed. No problem.

Sorry, but it would not work at all for me. It just set there, I
had to reset/reboot in order to get out of it.
I was/am running SEDT V3.3(241?).

11.14 | SEDT from [...new] works... | LDP::WEAVER | Laboratory Data Products/Science | Tue Jan 31 1989 18:03 | 8 |
| The latest version of SEDT (get if from the .NEW area on CURIE)
runs fine on my machine, other than its trying to access floppy
0 when it first starts up. Anker already has a fix for this which
he will upload the next time he puts together a distribution. If
this is your hang, then you can simply place a floppy in drive 0
and you should get around the problem.

11.16 | Some troubles with SEDT | ANNECY::MERCIER | | Wed May 03 1989 08:24 | 21 |
| Hello,
I have been using for a long time SEDT on Rainbow , very nice editor
( Thank you to the author)
A few weeks ago I bought an ATARI ST 520 , got the ST package from
CURIE::, but Iit does not work.
GSEDT crashes with 2 bombs or TOS ERROR 35 and SEDT.PRG seems to
work , accept alpha-numeric entries but no command enties ( neither
from keyboard nor keypad).
Of course I have installed the SThelp,key ... .txt and copy a
ruler0.txt from my RBW in the same directory.
I found in the same topic that Cache::Fontaine got the same troubles
and he could not fix them.
Has somebody resolve it or could you get me avaible an SEDT you
have tested on an ATARI ST.
Regards

11.17 | I have better luck downloading .ARCs then .PRGs | LEDDEV::WALLACE | | Wed May 03 1989 12:58 | 8 |
| I've gotten TOS ERROR 35 on a program when I download a .PRG and
don't have KERMIT set up for the correct file type. If you downloaded
a .PRG (as apposed to a .ARC) file then I'd suggest you download
the ARC if it is available or put it in an ARC file before you download
it. Of course if it was an ARC you downloaded then this probably
isn't your problem.

11.20 | Long live V3.3 ! | EICMFG::BURKE | Jim Burke, @UFC | Wed Aug 29 1990 05:03 | 26 |
| ....to revive this topic on a *great* piece of software...
I installed GSEDT V3.3 (3.2 ?) ages ago, and it works without hitch.
However, I have attempted to install newer versions as they came
available, but with zero success - I always have to double back to V3.3.
All later versions simply crash - either the program or the system.
With V4.0 (I think), I traced the problem to the File Selector which
I use (FSEL). Since I'm not prepared to give up this Fsel, I am forced
to stick to GSEDT V3.3.
I tried the latest version (V4.2 ?), and the machine crashes
altogether. Note that I tried it without ACC's, GDOS, etc., and the
problem persisted.
Config: Mega-2, mono, 3rd Coast h/disk, UK TOS (V1.02 ?)
I just cannot get any later versions to work. However, since V3.3 is
very robust (I have not been able to crash it), and it does pretty much
everything I need, I am not too bothered. I wouldn't feel justified in
approaching Anker (the author) on the SEDT Notesfile, since he
seems to do an enormous amount of bugfixes/wish-implementations for a
large range of SEDT hostings.
Does anybody else have this problem ?

11.21 | WPS keypad? | CHEFS::BAIN | Alex Bain @REO | Thu Nov 29 1990 12:27 | 14 |
| I am trying to avoid having to learn too many keypad editors. At work I use
WPS+ on the Rainbow and on VMS under ALL-IN-1. I would like to use the
same WPS keypad editor on my Atari ST for the simple editing of text files.
I have a version of SEDT on my Rainbow that is set up for WPS keypad editing.
I now have SEDT for the Atari, and would like to do the same.
I have looked in CURIE:: for a WPS keypad configuration/help files etc for SEDT
on the Atari but have been unable to find any. Do they exist? Has anyone
got them? Has anyone done this before?
(also posted in SEDT notesfile)
