| You mean the old customs house building? Last I heard it was going to
be turned into expensive condos or something on that order. I haven't
been in Boston at night for a long time, so I don't know if it is still
lit up at night.

| I think they're timeshare condos. If the clock isn't lit, watch the WLVI Ten
O'Clock News on channel 56.

| Yeah, I believe it is the old customs house. Expensive condos, eh?
I was just in town last night ~9pm and it wasn't lit up. I always
look forward to seeing it (just because) but it hasn't been lit for a
long time. Maybe the guy who changes the lightbulbs is on sick leave
or something.

| My guess is that the current owners don't want to pay for the electricity
to light it up. It's unfortunate. I have seen it on the Ch. 56 news and the
new lighting is very attractive.

| > What's the name of the signature 'clock tower' building in Boston?
Custom House (or Custom House Tower). It's on the Boston Society of
Architects list of "Boston's 10 Best Buildings" - see
http://www.architects.org/10best.html (found via an AltaVista search,
of course :-) - couldn't find any info on why it's not lit up, though).

| According to an ad in this Sunday's Boston Globe, the Custom House
Tower is now owned by Marriott. They are turning it into luxury
time-share condos. If you've got an annual income of at least $80K,
you can go take a tour. They are restoring the tower and the clock
will be relit in the future (don't know when).

How can they tell?

Because the tour costs $80K, payable in installments of $1538/week.

They can't tell, they just ask. But if I lied, I wouldn't feel
relaxed during the tour.

1231.10 | dusty old bureaucrat offices in there | WRKSYS::RICHARDSON | | Tue Jun 03 1997 13:40 | 8 |
| It would actually be sort of wierd to tour the old Customs House
building now - it used to be a bunch of dusty old government offices
and such stuff. I recall taking my ham radio exams in an office there,
years ago. I mean, the place was about as luxurious then as the
century-old grammar school I went to. They must have gutted the whole
place to make luxury condos out of it!

That rules out about 90% of DECcies. And I don't suppose the tour includes
the clock works.
