5046.0. "A stray in the MRO complex?" by MODEL::CROSS () Thu Nov 07 1991 14:04

    In case you are in the Marlboro area, I have been noticing a tortie,
    short-hair running about the MRO complex. Late on Thursday I was
    leaving the MRO2 building (the shipping dock) and finally found what
    I thought was this cat's shelter. It looks like a long wood box with
    a doghouse style opening. When she saw me she darted into this box,
    then when I approached, she left the box and raced down the side of
    the hill.

    I believe this cat is a stray and was wondering if any other FELINER
    has seen her. I feel badly because it is getting colder. I thought
    of trying to leave some food somehwere in the hopes that she will
    keep coming and I can catch her. I just don't know where she will
    show up next, and always, when I have seen her, I've been on my way
    to a workshop or some other function our group is giving. Other times,
    I never see her at all!

    This is frustrating. I once saw her heading down the embankment near
    MRO3 heading to MRO4.

    From what I can tell she has no collar.

5046.2Food for STrayMODEL::CROSSFri Nov 08 1991 11:0111

    Thanks Bonnie....I bought a bunch of cans of Super Supper and I've
    left it in my car. On the way out today I am going to check out the
    back of MRO2, and maybe leave a little food out. I'll come back
    tomorrow during the day to see what happened. The hard thing will
    be to keep other animals away from the food (I.e. skunks and raccoons
    and such), but since I can't determine where she will ever be next,
    I want to just leave a bowl near where I last saw her. If it is her
    territory, she probably patrols it regularly.

    If I remember correctly...there are other notes in here about the
    stray cats at the MRO complex...I think some of those notes go
    back years. I believe there were a few other noters that were
    feeding it and also built it a shelter. Does anyone remember
    these notes????

5046.4Didn't know about that!MODEL::CROSSFri Nov 08 1991 11:0610

    Odd, because the little hut I saw her go into looked just like a rustic
    doghouse....up in back of MRO2. But she is the only one I've seen in
    the six months I've been working in this area, so I don't know if there
    are others.

    That would be interesting to find out. It's just getting so cold, and
    my heart goes out to her. I'm going to start the feeding today.

5046.6Cats in the stairwellRDVAX::BEAUDETFri Nov 08 1991 15:546
    A couple of years ago there were kittens and their mother who
    apparently were living in the cement enclosed stairwell to the right of
    MRO2. I went down the stairs once and at the bottom there was lots of
    leaves kind of hollowed out into a nice protected area. I was never
    able to get up close to them and then I think the mother moved them to
    a quieter place.
5046.7Stray in MROFSOA::PHOUDETue Nov 12 1991 12:4715
    I also have seen (what I believe is a stray) a stray by MRO3. It was a
    beautiful orange cat (Morris) looked very healthy and well fed. There
    are also a few homes across from the main entrance to MRO1. It is
    possible that this is where they live. Someone else mentioned that
    there were others as well. To play it safe though the food is a great
    idea. Please let me know if there is a feeding schedule and if for
    some reason whomever is feeding him can't I will be more than happy to
    help out. I will provide some food as well.

    I know you mentioned the cat wasn't wearing a collar but did he look
    real mangy and thin?

    Please let me know how I can help. I am in MR1 - 297-6529.

    Be aware that with a winter coat, a cat can *appear* to
    be well fed, when underneath all that fur is a starving,
    bone thin cat!!!!
    Last year at this time, I had one of these show up at
    my house....she is now WELL FED and also has one heck
    of a winter coat!

    Hi everyone,

    I put the base note in here about the MRO strays and now I have found
    that, in fact, they DO have a wonderful foster mom who takes GREAT care
    of them. They are neutered, they are fed daily (even on weekends) and
    they are happy. They have shelter as well, so this is a big plus. I
    am sorry if I alarmed anyone, and I felt it my duty to let everyone
    know that though these cats are feral, they do have someone who loves
    and cares for them very much. They are fiercely protected ... :-)
    The woman works for DEC and has thanked everyone for their concern.

    Dry food donations are gladly accepted however. Call or write me and I
    will forward your name and number on to their foster mom. I didn't
    want to print that or reveal that here, as I did not ask them and don't
    want to offend or overstep my bounds.

    I'm just happy that these cats are happy and that they are healthy
    (under a vets care) and thriving.

    Nancy,

    Thanks for entering that note about the Foster Mom! It makes me feel
    lots better knowing they are really being taken care of. Vet care and
    everything! What a wonderful lady!

    I'll be in touch about the dry food donation off line. ;-)
