5005.0. "Please Help - Vomiting Cat" by MRKTNG::WEBER (Nancy Weber @TTB) Thu Oct 10 1991 14:51

on 9/28 I woke to find a puddle of urine with blood in it..so off
to the vet we went for Luther's 3rd cystitus diagnosis. The vet
gave him the usual amoxicilin and told me to put him in S/D for
4 weeks then C/D. He was ok for a couple of days then I noticed
that he was vomiting. The vomiting became more frequent so I
took him to the vet on Monday 10/7. The vet told me to stop the
amoxicilin and to give him only the S/D (I'd been giving him a
tsp of his usual 9-Lives at night). Only problem, Luther's still
vomiting. Yesterday morning (he'd ususally just done it in the
evening and night) he vomited up all his breakfast. The problem
is that it's never consistant. Also in the early AM hours he's
    vomiting up an empty stomach.

Anyone have any ideas? Could Luther be reacting to the S/D? Has
anyone experienced this with S/D? Any ideas of how to stop him
    from vomiting?

ps: I forgot to mention that Luther's diet for the last 5 years
has been only Science Diet and Ok'd 9-Lives (as treats) in the
evening. However, he is an outdoor cat so I can't guarentee that
he doesn't get into another cats food (hence the last 2 attachs).

Taja had a reaction to some amoxicillan he was given recently and
continually vomited while on it. The vet told me to administer the
meds after he had eaten instead of before. This helped. For several
days after the pills were discontinued he still vomited. Even now, he
seems to be the most sensitive to certain foods and I have to be
    careful about his diet.

Sometimes if a cat eats the same thing day after day with no variety a
food allergy can develop. To determine if his reaction is allergic in
nature, switch to a strictly lamb and rice diet for at least 3 weeks.

After Holly exhibited the vomiting in response to amoxillin (sp?)
reaction, her vet put her on a different kind of antibiotic.

This happened with Argus and I initally thot he was blocked. When I
brought him to the vet, it was determined that he was badly
    constipated.

Vomitting is also a symptom of kidney disease. while it sounds
like a reaction to the amoxi, I would be very careful with this.
It is possible that the infection has gotten into his kidneys.
Keep a close eye on him.

Nephra is still vomiting after 1yr. She vomits everyday! I have spent
    alot of $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$ at
the vets..and we don't know why she does it. We have done EVERYTHING
so we are just living w/ it now.

I don't recollect nephra's note -- have you tried a bland food? My
cats throw up instantly as a result of various 9 Lives flavors, for
    instance.

The new Whiska's Conditioning Diet, available in your local supermarket
just might do the trick. It's a chicken and rice bland diet and it
worked great for baby Beth. You might give it a try. If you can't
find it in your supermarket, let me know...I can get it here (Nashua).

5005.9mean old pipe cleaner...SRFCLB::RADAMSMon Oct 14 1991 17:0117
One day Cherie started vomitting ever 45 minutes or so. This really concerned
me because she rarely ever throws up.. After sitting up with her all night, I
started getting scared. Not only was she still throwing up, but a little blood
was starting to mix in with the "expelled material". We made it to the vet and
he gave her a shot to help her stop vomiting. He believed that it was just
a mild gastric irritation and she'd stop sometime soon. Well.. Hours later,
she was sitting upright on our bed, with the crabbiest look on her face that
I've ever seen. Her expression said, "If you come close to me, I'll puke on you
and then I'll laugh demonically at your disgust." She was starting to
dehydrate as well, so back to the vet we went.

After x-raying her, he discovered that she had swallowed a pipe cleaner and
it was stuck in her throat! Luckily he was able to extract it through her
mouth and no surgery was involved..

If only all cat problems were as silly and easy to fix as this one..
