4999.0. "LOST KITTY EXIT 5W" by JARETH::TAYLOR () Wed Oct 09 1991 14:56

My kitty has been missing since Friday (oct. 4). I miss her terribly
and am hoping that someone has taken her in temporarily. I live near
the Nashua Landfill on exit 5W. Zelda is a small (8.5 pound) black and
white shorthair. She has white on her nose, chest, belly, front paws
and back legs, and white on the tip of her tail. She is declawed in
the front. If you know of anyone who has adopted a cat that looks like
this _please_ let me know. I can't even sleep at night without knowing
where she is and if she is alright.

My home number is 595-9852 and my external work phone is 881-0517.

    Becky -
There are numerous other notes about finding a lost cat. Most
importantly, check your basement and garage and all your neighbor's
    basements and garages.

Check out other notes on lost cats.

There is a keyword FINDING-LOST-CATS. I believe if you use the
command dir/keyword=FINDING-LOST-CATS you will the a listing of
all the notes connected to that keyword.
      Good luck

My heart goes out to you...and I'll pray for her return. I
would like to suggest that you read through note 4139. There
are many suggestions in there on things to do to try and find
    lost cats.

    Please keep us posted.....

    	Becky,

I take 5W home every night so I'll keep my eyes open. Like
mentioned before check neighbors etc and call the humane
society to see if anyone has dropped a cat off with your
description. I did see a black and white one there the
other night that was just recently brough in so you might
want to call. The number is 883-8512.

4999.6thanks for your help!JARETH::TAYLORThu Oct 10 1991 16:0016

I want to thank all of you for your words of encouragement
and suggestions. This has really been helping me to maintain
hope. I have promised the neighborhood kids that I would bake
them cookies if they found Zelda. I put notices in mailboxes
asking folks to check their garages, sheds, and basements. My
sister put posters up all over creation. We called the DPW to
see if they picked her up, fortuntately the answer was no. I call
the humane society daily and am going through all of the vets in
the yellow pages. I'm working on some posters to hang all over
    the world.

Again, thanks for your ideas and support. It really means a
    lot!

Don't rely on a phone call to the Humane societies and the
animal officer. If possible you should go and check yourself.
To a stranger, alot of cats look alike.

    Becky,

I know just how you feel. We lost our small female cat 3 weeks ago
when we added a new kitten to the family. She was gone 8 days and
then just came home on her own.

Putting out flyers and posters is a good idea. I used real pictures
on my posters as photo copies didn't show her coloring very well.
I would also advise you to leave out a dish of her favorite food or
some dry food so just incase she returns when you aren't home she
will know you haven't gone off and left her for good.

We'll all keep a look out for her in Nashua. I know how much this
not knowing is destroying you, it is the worrying and not knowing
if she's ok that hurts so much.

Fingers crossed that you'll find her soon.

    /Robin

4999.9I FOUND HER!!!!JARETH::TAYLORTue Nov 12 1991 09:528

I FOUND MY KITTY!!! A woman in Hollis had picked her up Friday
night. She took her to the vet for a checkup where she saw my lost
kitty sign. This is too good to be true! Thank you all for your
support and offers to help. It really meant a lot to me. For all who
have lost their beloved cats, take heart, you may yet see them again!

4999.17I FOUND MY CAT!!!JARETH::TAYLORTue Nov 12 1991 09:5614
I got my Zelda back after a bit over 5 weeks! Life can be soooo good.
I received a phone call from a woman in Hollis who had seen Zelda
wandering around her house for a couple of weeks. They weren't going
to take her in, but the family dog was chasing her and somehow she got
a plastic bag stuck on her head. So, they took her in last Friday
night. The woman took Zelda to the vet yesterday for a checkup and saw
one of my lost kitty signs. She called me, I went, and boy did I ever
    cry!!

Thanks to all of you who supported me through this. Your ideas quite
obviously paid off. And for those of you who have lost your cats, take
heart. You very well may see them again!

4999.14one tired and hungry kitty!JARETH::TAYLORTue Nov 12 1991 11:098

Zelda seems to be happy to be home, with exception to the new
kitten! She is alternating between sleeping on my bed and pigging out
at the food bowl. She growls constantly while eating and quite a bit
while she sleeps. Anyone know about how long that will last? I plan
on keeping indoors for a while, any suggestions on how long I should
keep her in for? I would hate to lose her again!
4999.15GrowlingMODEL::CROSSTue Nov 12 1991 11:3216
I think it all depends. I have one feral who growled at the food bowl
for about a month until the others (I have four cats now) just kept
infringing on her territory till she realized she had to just give up
and let them join in....otherwise she went without. The other who just
came into the family mews in his sleep and also growls at the foodbowl
and he hasn't stopped yet. It has only been a few weeks though, and
I'm sure with time he too will give it up. I think being out on their
own has forced them to protect what is theirs (ie. territory, food,
etc) and this has to be unlearned after time spent in a safe
    environment. I could be wrong.

That's just my experience..... the only time my first feral continues
to growl is when she has a favorite toy. That still lingers....

this will go away with time. Maybe she hears the kitten in another
    room....

I CAN'T BELIEVE IT!!! I THINK I'M AS HAPPY AS YOU ARE!!!

A couple of weeks ago I tried to mail to you & your node was unreachable.
I wanted to tell you how sorry I was that your kitty had been missing &
that I hoped she returned soon. I guess someone heard me!!! :*)

This restores my faith in the fact that I may actually find the ORIGINAL
owner of the stray I've been helping, Claude.

I actually cried when I thought about how happy you must've been!

CONGRATULATIONS, and in answer to how long you'd keep the little
wanderer inside, I say FOREVER! At least that's how I'd feel if one of
my babies ran off!! I know tho, that some cats like to go out so much
that it's almost mean to keep them indoors after they've grown so used
to going out. It's strange....I wonder why she wandered off? maybe
someone has a boy kitty she likes?! ;*)

    Bonnie,

I don't know that I can keep her in forever, though I would like
to. As for why she left, that question has plagued me forever! I am
sooo happy to have her back! I will keep her in the house for at least
as long as it takes for her to gain back the weight she dropped on her
adventure (probably 2 pounds off her already slight 8.5 pound body!).

How long have you had your stray for?

    Becky,

I know what you mean about keeping her indoors. It's not always that
easy. Maybe she just forgot her way home & will be more careful in the
future. I BET YOU'RE ABSOLUTLY ELATED!

We've been caring for Claude since the begining of October. He seems
like he must've been a people cat, but maybe it's just that he is
starved for affecton???? Soon we'll have to face the fact that he's
an orphan & find him a new home (like real soon), but I've been trying
to hold out, looking for his REAL people.

I hope he's as lucky as your kitty!! Everytime I think aboput this I
    smile

    Becky,

You may want to run her by your vet's office for a check up. The only
time a cat of mine growled in her sleep it turned out that she was very
ill. It was one of my breeding queens. Her only symptom was growling
during her sleep. It dawned on me that this was not normal so I took
her in. She had pyometra (a uterine infection) and her white blood
cell count was 51,000!! That is toxic levels of bacteria in her blood
and she could easily have died. Emergency surgery was done and she
    recovered nicely.

Thanks, Jo. I had called my vet this morning and explained all
but the growling. I'll give him a call back. Wouldn't want anything
worse to happen to my baby than what already has!

I went home at lunch (brought her favorite food) and she crawled up
into my lap and got all lovey. I think that she is glad to finally be
    home.
