4995.0. "Info on auto feeders ?" by NEMAIL::FITZGERALDJ () Tue Oct 08 1991 13:52

      We have two cats Pudgy and MaiLing as the names imply Pudgy is an
    overeater MaiLing is a nineteen year old Siamese. Pudgy will always
    "woof" down her food and then eat some of MaiLing's This is not a
    problem when we are home we just separate them when Pudgy is done
    with her food. However, when we go away for 2 or 3 days and put
    3 days of food out when we return Pudgy is bigger than ever and
    maiLing is hungry because Pudgy ate all the food the first day.
    We can't always get someone to come in look after them, and don't
    want to separate them because they're company for each other.

    My question is: Does anyone know of a device on the market
    that will automatically distribute portioned amounts on a
    daily basis. I know such a device would not solve the problem
    completely but at least MaiLing would get something each day.

4995.1Try Purity SupremenNITMOI::OTOOLETue Oct 08 1991 15:5910
    Hi,

    My husband picked up a container like this at Purity Supreme in
    Fitchburg it had a container of Friskies (I think) I can look tonight
    to see if I still have the empty container. It works on a system when
    the dish is low, it fills it up again.

    Hope that this might help. It was not expensive either about 4.99.

    I have a few of the auto feeders from Purina Cat Chow.
    As the cats eat, the dish refills itself. It holds
    a 3.5 lb of dry catfood. They work great!

    (In fact, the neighborhood cats have all discovered the
    one in the barn!!!)

    I used one of those or about two months and Argus got HUGE from it.

    I think that i have seen what the base noter is askign for in one of
    the pet catalogs. It is a feeder that is on a timer; the cover opens at
    predfined times, and closes itself at all other times.

    That's right,Deb, I am looking for something that is on a timer.
    If I put out a feeder that refills as the cat eats Pudgy would
    live by the feeder. The former owner who gave her up as a kitten
    said that apparently when she was in the litter she couldn't compete
    well against her siblings for food because of her misaligned lower jaw
    so now she can't get enough food.

    Thanks for the info, I'll have to see if I can find such a catalog.

                                         Thanks, Jack

    Hi,

    I just threw away a Peddigree catalog that had one in it. If I happen
    to get any more, I will be glad to send it your way.

    Sorry that I can't be of more help. I will keep my eyes open for you.

4995.85 Bowl Automatic Pet FeederWR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOset home/cat_max=infinityWed Oct 09 1991 14:2821
    reprinted from the October issue of the CFA Almanac:

    The CAT MATE C50 is so neatly designed with rotary action that although
    it is a little larger than a dinner plate, each of it's 5 bowls can
    hold enough moist and/or dry food for two hungry cats and it is
    designed for serving food at the normal feeding times, just as if you
    were there yourself.

    Food is kept fresh by twin ice packs and most importantly a proven
    electronic timer ensures that your cat is fed precisely at its normal
    feeding times-essential for diabetic cats and appreciated by all well
    kept cats. Although nothing can ever replace your being there, the CAT
    MATE C50 can make the wait a little easier for your cat. The CAT MATE
    C50 is available at pet stores, but in case of difficulty locating it,
    contact the manufacturers: ANI MATE INC., RT 21 Box 1165, Conroe, TX
    77301, or call (409)760-4333.

    Does this sound like something you could use?

4995.9CAN THESE AUTO FEEDERS BE TRUSTED??KERNEL::HALES_OWENWed Nov 13 1991 18:088
    I have seen these auto feeders in the shops complete with timer &
    refrigerated units for up to 5 meals, but when it comes down to it can
    you really trust this mechanism to work?? Is there anyone out there
    who has used them satisfactorily?? How exactly do they operate?? I
    would hate to go away for a weekend & come back to find my 2 girls sat
    by a closed full dish..

4995.10They work.XNOGOV::LISAGive quiche a chanceThu Nov 14 1991 05:046
    I've got one - it works! There is a dial that you use to set the delay
    before the lid opens. When the dial gets round to the right spot, the
    lid pops up. Take a close look at one in a shop cos its hard to
    explain.

4995.11LEECHS::hiltonHow's it going royal ugly dudes?Thu Nov 14 1991 06:237
I got one, with the 5 holes and space for frozen ice packs. Seems to be
OK. My big worry is that the batteries could run out!

We never use it for more that one night, just in case, and 'cos they
are kittens and don't go out, the litter would need a clean!!

4995.12this might work..SOLVIT::IVESThu Nov 14 1991 09:5116
    If you are only going away for a weekend you shouldn't have to
    go into a lot of preparation. If you feed them last thing before
    you walk out the door on friday PM, and leave PLENTY of water in
    a dish they can't tip over and a BIG bowl of dry food they wouldn't
    starve before you got home on Sunday. They basically would only be
    going without the wet food. Turning the heat down to 60 in your
    house should keep any wet food okay for them to eat on saturday,
    except of course if they pig out on friday night and eat it all.

    The above works fine for several people I know, however I have
    someone to drop in and feed mine and keep an eye on them. Fire
    is probably my biggest fear. We live in a townhouse complex with
    fireplaces in some units and knowing how careless some folks can
    be it worry's me. (but then my husband says I do that best.!!)

4995.13calling all UK Feliners!CHEST::ELLIOTThu Nov 14 1991 11:459
    Can anyone tell me where you can buy these automatic feeders in
    the UK? (south of England, to be precise) I used to see adverts
    for them in the Observer magazine and such, but of course now that
    I want one I don't seem to see them advertised any more!

    Sam and Lucky will be most grateful if you can help ;-)

    June,

    Most of the pet shops sell them. We bought ours at a Cat show, where
    they always seem to have them reduced by a few quid.

    I'd leave at least two water dishes; one could always get tipped over.
