4994.0. "Cat Loose on Median of 495 in Chelmsford" by LJOHUB::OUELLETTE () Tue Oct 08 1991 13:36

    < Cat loose on median between 495 in Chelmsford near rest area >

    I spotted a cat last Tuesday, Oct. 1 in the median stripe between
    495 in Chelmsford 1 1/2 miles from the rest area. I was traveling
    North at around 5:30 p.m. I had hope that somehow the cat would
    manage to return home, until I spotted it again Thursday. From what
    I could see, it looked like an orange tabby. On Thursday, I could
    see that it looked dirtier than on Tuesday. Both times I wanted to
    stop but what was I to do, unprepared, empty handed and in dress
    cloths.

    I called a few places. First directory assistance for a number of
    any human society in Chelmsford. She wasn't able to find one, so
    she gave me the dog officiers number. I called and got the police
    station. They told me that he doesn't handle cats and gave me the
    number for the state. I called them the same night, Thursday and
    told them I spotted a cat and asked if they could help it. They
    said they would try.

    On Monday, Oct. 7 I spotted a cat again. It didn't look like an
    orange tabby. It looked more like a calico cat. Large brown spot
    as well as white. It looked pretty clean. I'm not sure if it's
    the same cat, but once again I was unable to do anything. This
    has bothered me so much. I called the state police again and the
    officier said they would see what they could do. I stressed that
    this cat may attempt to cross the highway and possibly cause an
    accident and killing itself in the process. I was hoping for a
    fast response.

    Tonight I will be keeping my eyes out for it again. Maybe there
    are two of them. I noticed a farm on the south side. I don't
    know if they or it came from there.

    What else can be done to help these animals?

    Thanks for your attention.

4994.1Spotted a Cat Again Today!LJOHUB::OUELLETTEWed Oct 09 1991 13:1310
                         < Spotted a Cat Again today >

    I saw a cat again today at 8:15 a.m. traveling 495 South about 15 feet
    from the first Board Street sign. It has a grayish coat. I was unable
    to see the rest of it traveling so fast with the traffic. I did call
    the MSPCA in Methuen to see if they could help it. They said they
    would try. I'm pretty sure there's more than 1 cat now on that median
    strip. I wish I could do more to help.

      It sounds like you've certainly called anyone that is in a position
    to be able to help. Whether they will or not, I don't know. It is
    dangerous for anyone to try to stop on the highway and help, just as it
    is almost certain death for the cat to cross the highway. I hope there
    aren't any kittens in there too!
      You've been so good about trying to call people. I hope they listen.

    I have also seen cats on the median stip of 495. I actually suspect
    a feral colony living there. I stopped once to try and get a
    black and white cat (took my life in my hands stopping on the
    median on the fast side) but the cat ran away before I could get
    any where near it.

4994.4<Spotted same Cat Again Today!>LJOHUB::OUELLETTEFri Oct 11 1991 13:3017
    I saw the same cat I saw on Wednesday. It had grayish fur and a dark
    face. It looked real pretty. It was staring into the bushes. I was
    traveling 495 South and spotted the cat 1 mile before the Broad Street
    exit. I really wanted to stop but I was afraid I would scare it onto the
    highway causing accidents and possibly death of cat and people.

    I called the lowell human society at 8:30 a.m. The lady said they open
    at 9:00 and she would give someone my message. I never heard back from
    them. I've tried calling the MSPCA again but there phone was always
    busy. It's been very frustrating trying to get help for these cats.
    Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Claire

4994.5On a positive note....BOOVX1::MANDILELynne a.k.a. HRHFri Oct 11 1991 15:026
    Median strips seem to attract a lot of cats, and I
    think it's because some of them have a high rodent
    population, or bird population. Maybe there are
    a lot of cats there because of this?

4994.6<No Spottings of Cats Today> Correction Boston Rd.LJOHUB::OUELLETTEMon Oct 14 1991 13:156
    No spottings today regarding the cats. I noticed that they mowed the
    grass. I hope noone got hurt. Maybe the lawn mowers scared the cats
    back home.

    PS: I made a mistake regarding where I spotted them. The last one was
         spotted near Boston Road, Rt. 225 not Broad Street.
4994.7Cat on the Other Side TodayLJOHUB::OUELLETTETue Oct 15 1991 13:136
    Well I saw the cat today going 495 South near Boston Road. It was on
    the right side instead of the median strip. I am really glad it
    crossed the highway safely. I just wished it stopped hanging around
    the highway though.
