4984.0. "Bizzy Box" by AIMHI::UPTON () Mon Oct 07 1991 10:21

    	I read somewhere in this notes file about a Bizzy Box for cats.
    	Well I went to the pet shop and they had one made out of cardboard.
    	I figured I could make one for nothing and this way if my two cats
    	didn't like it, there was no wasted money. I went and got two lids
    	from the Zerox copy paper, put them together (one fits real snug
    	over the other one). Cut holes in it - one round, one square, one
    	triangle and a 1/2 moon. Make sure holes are not big enough for
    	them to put their heads in. Well I put a bunch of noisey rolling
    	balls with bells etc. in the box. My Siamese Ashley spent three
    	straight hours Friday night playing in that box. She had one leg
    	in one call, her hose in another and a front paw in another. She
    	is in love with this thing and it didn't cost a thing!

    	Just make sure the box isn't too deep. The lids I used are about
    	4 inches in height. This way they can hit things with their paws,
    	otherwise it won't be any fun for them. You could actually see
    	her "thinking" of how to get at the toys. If I just touch the
    	box and make the balls roll around, both cats are tight there. Even
    	my shy 4 yr. old Siamese was sitting there playing with it for at
    	least 1/2 hr and she never plays.

    	Give it a try - they'll love it!

    I'm sorry, I really don't understand what a Bizzy Box is suppose to do.

    With the holds in the top of the box can't they get the toys out with
    their paws? I know I'm missing something, I just don't know what.....

    	My two Siamese have their paws in the Bizzy box for hours without
    	getting a toy out. Once in awhile, one gets a hold of a toy and
    	then they go back to the box and try for another. My two don't
    	have front claws so they can't grab the toys as easy, but this
    	doesn't stop them from trying!

    	Trust Me - your cat will love it! Someone else in my group made
    	one for their three cats yesterday, and they played all night in
    	it (the cats not the owners :')!

    My blind kitten, Beth, can get any toy out of her Bizzy-Kitty in a
    matter of seconds. Honey, my 9 year old, gave up weeks ago. But I can
    put 7 or 8 various toys into it and Beth has them out in minutes.
    She's very clever....she even tries to get them back in, but she hasn't
    quite gotten the hang of it.

4984.5Where and how much?MR4DEC::COLAIANNITue Oct 08 1991 13:5710
    Hi,

     I know I asked this before, but now I forget where! (That'll teach me
    to enter a note off the subject! ;-) )

     Being in a building in which those boxes are golden, and very hard to
    come by, what pet shop have the bizzy boxes been spotted in, and how
    much were they? Thanks in advance.

    	Food for Pets at 101A Amherst, NH has (603) 673-7387 for $9.99.
    	Which is why I made one. Knowing my cats IF I bought it they
    	probably wouldn't have like it! Fussy little buggers!

    Thanks for the info. I know what you mean! The cheaper the toy, the
    better they like it. Allexcept those little furry mice. They love
    those. I think I'll keep my eyes peeled for those box covers. I don't
    get up to NH much. I did see them in a catalog, Harriet Carter I think,
    and I think they were about that same price.

    Maybe I'll get lucky, and find some of those boxes. Sounds like the
    best bet if I can get them.

    Gee, I guess I did get a bargain from Haddleigh House! It was only
    $5.00 at the Bedford show. Their number was just posted today; you
    might wanna give tem a call and see what the price is. I doubt I would
    have spent $10 on one, but for $5, what a deal...
4984.9Where do the holes go?WMOIS::RIVETTS_PThu Oct 10 1991 10:195
        Excuse me for being really stupid, but do you cut the holes in the
    top of the box. Do you also cut holes in the sides, too. I have never
    seen a bizzy box, but I do have access to Zerox boxes and would like to
    make one.

4984.10AIMHI::UPTONThu Oct 10 1991 11:0715

    	The holes are in the top only, but I guess you could put a few
    	in the sides, but not too near the bottom or the toys would fall out.
    	Remember - don't make the holes too big, or they could get their
    	heads stuck - and believe me they will try and put their heads in
    	as far as they can. I used a glass as an outline or anything that
    	is round, square that they can get their paws into.

    So, you put together two of the 4 inch lids, and then cut
    hole in the top, and place in toys? Making sure that the
    holes are not big enough for cats to put in their heads...

    Hmmm....I think I'll scout around for some lids here.
    Of course, mine love to chew apart cardboard boxes, so if
    I make one, it will probably last a day or so...(-8

    I tried making a bizzy box but I think I made the holes too small.
    They are about as big around as a ping-pong ball.

    Tiffany played with it a bit but didn't seem too impressed.

4984.13CALS::HEALEYDTN 297-2426 (was Karen Luby)Thu Oct 17 1991 13:2616
	I also made a bizzy box as per the directions in .0. I may
	have made the holes too small as well (like Nancy did, mine
	were about the size of a ping-pong ball). About what diameter
	would a round hole have, 2 inches?

	Regardless, the cats seem to like it. I put in T.K.'s favorite
	toys (beer caps and tin foil balls) and he was all set. Bandit
	wasn't that interested, but he isn't interested in much anyhow.
	When I spilled a little loose catnip in the box he liked it
	much better; in fact, he licked the box!

	Thanks to .0 for the idea!

    Well, my box is done. It came out pretty good, too! I put 5 holes in
    the box, they are about the size of a small apple. Large enough to play
    in, but small enough to keep heads out. I'm going to bring it home &
    let the girls play! I hope they like it!

Well I made my box a week ago and they loved it! Shame it's now been
chewed and beaten such that I've got to find another box!

Thanks for a great idea
4984.17good thing you didn't BUY one, they wouldn't like it!MCIS2::HUSSIANChristmas is only 7 weeks away!!Tue Nov 05 1991 11:359
    Hi Greg,
    My kids liked theirs too! They'll spend about 5 mins playing & then
    come back to it later. At first, I thouht they were NEVER going to
    leave it alone!!!

    It's true, the less you spend, the more they like it!
