4959.0. "Kitty Litter" by MCIS5::CAPPEL () Tue Sep 24 1991 16:30

    Just wanted to share my find with you. If you're like me the
    only thing you don't like about your cat is the litter box.
    We went to a fair this past weekend and there was an exhibit
    for a clean, non smelling kitty litter. This litter is really
    neat. When your cat urinates in the litter, the litter absorbs
    all the liquid making a solid waste clump. You then just scoop
    out the waste. No waste is left in the litter box therefore there
    is no smell. The product is complete safe for the environment.

    You never have to empty a litter box again!!

    There are two products that do this. One you can buy in the
    grocery store and it's called Scoop Away. The other is a little
    more expensive and can only be bought in certain pet stores. I
    belive it's called Ever Guard (I'll check it tonight and let you
    know).

    The only draw back to the product I've seen is that it's fine like
    sand. The cat sinks in the box when she gets in and this causes
    her to play with the litter. It's just a phase (I hope).

    Somewhere in here there's a discussion of this. be a little careful,
    as some cats have developed eye ulcerations from the litter; it also
    aggravated my Sweetie's respiratory problem.

    To find more topics that deal with the subject of sand type clumping
    litters, type "show key/full litter" at the notes prompt. There are
    several discussions of these types of products, as well as notes that
    tell about associated problems with this type of litter.

    I used one of these types of litter, Kitty Purrfect for 2 months. Yes,
    being able to scoop the little balls is great, but after awhile the
    ammonia smell permeated the litter and then the whole house. For me,
    with four cats, that smell is not worth the convenience. I'm back to
    using Johnny Cat with the liner bags. Might be more expensive, but at
    least the smell is gone!

4959.4boxes still need to be disinfectedWR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOset home/cat_max=infinityTue Sep 24 1991 21:1812
    I think that this type of litter is a bad idea because it gives folks
    the idea that they don't have to clean their litter boxes. In order to
    reduce the risk of infectious organisms growing in the box, litter
    boxes should be disinfected when they are changed. If you aren't
    changing the box, then it isn't being disinfected either.

    Just as an example, roundworm is one of the types of illnesses that can
    linger in a litter box and infect cats over and over in the
    environment. You could keep treating your cat, and treating your cat,
    and all the while he is being reinfected from his own litter box.

4959.5Don't like it!!EARRTH::DREYERWed Sep 25 1991 09:447
    I just tried scoop away, and don't like it at all. The litter box
    needsalot more attending to, and the ammonia does permeate the
    remaining granules after a couple of weeks. With two cats it costs me
    more than conventional letter as well, and the find sand gets
    everywhere!

    Over in the U.K. you can buy litter which is made of/contains something
    called "Fullers Earth" , I think this is a copyrighted name or
    something as all litter which is of this type carries the name on the
    bag. This stuff is like grey gravel, it soaks up the urine which then
    forms into a lump and can be easily removed. We usually remove lumps
    every day and top up with fresh litter, then every 3 weeks or so we let
    the level of litter run down then empty the tray completely and wash it
    out. There is very little mess from this litter and we have not noticed
    any bad smells, and having tried other forms of litter I wouldn't use
    anything else.
