4957.3 | Maybe because... | BOOKS::GERDE | Cymbal crash 2X only...DTN 237-6302 | Wed Sep 25 1991 13:00 | 8 |
| If I were new to this notesfile, I don't think the title "Pat Brody
Rest in Peace" would give me any indication that the note was about a
shelter. And, unless I already knew that Pat Brody was a person, I
might wrongly assume the note was an obit for someone's cat.
Perhaps some of the replies from 4414 might be put into this note.

4957.4 | | WILLEE::MERRITT | | Wed Sep 25 1991 13:09 | 9 |
| The title can be changed. That note was started when Pat had
passed away...and we have used it for everything related to
the shelter since that time.
If the final decision is to make this the permanent shelter note...
I do beleive there is alot of "good" information in 4414 that should
be transferred to this note. It just seems like alot of extra work!

4957.5 | This is the official Pat Brody Shelter topic | WR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JO | set home/cat_max=infinity | Wed Sep 25 1991 14:15 | 17 |
| This will be the official Pat Brody note. The other note is not
keyworded, and deals mostly with the information about Pat's death, and
how the shelter survived since then. Any author of a reply in the
other topic can move that reply by extracting it and then doing a
"reply filename.whatever" in this file. I would prefer to keep this
note clean of chatter and clutter, and let the folks that are working
with the Pat Brody shelter use this as a place to announce cats and
kittens available for adoption, which shows they will be bringing cats
too, requests for information or help regarding the shelter, etc. I
have set up similar notes for two other shelters and they have been
working out wonderfully.
All future replies to this topic should be directly related to the Pat
Brody shelter, and not to discussion about which note will be the
official one.

| I deleted the note I originally wrote about the cookbook, as I have
been getting calls and notes offline. When I re-read my information
- I neglected to leave some pertinent information out.
In order to raise money - for a fence - for the new Pat Brody Shelter
we are going to compile a cookbook.
I am requesting that anyone interested in submitting a recipe(s)
for this book...please do so by mailing it to me (offline) at
SNAKKE::ANDERSON or by calling my office at DTN 223-6432.
Please send the recipe to my attention and state the category of
the recipe (i.e., salad, bread, soup, casserole, appetizer, dessert,
etc.). Also, please put your full name and the city/town and/or
Country that you live in as this will be printed under the recipe
and you are given the proper credit.
We would like to have it ready to sell by Thanksgiving and I will
keep you all posted as to its progress. Also, when and where
they will be available and how much they will be.
Thank you!

So - I would suggest this:
Center the heading - bold it if you can.
L - left margin 10 (so if it is spriral bound some of the recipe
won't be destroyed)
R - right margin 70

4957.11 | CFA Fitchburg Show | CIMNET::GLADDING | Noters do it with a 8-) | Mon Oct 14 1991 11:53 | 37 |
| I wanted to let everyone know how we made out at the CFA show in
Fitchburg this weekend.
*** THE SHOW WAS A ROUSING SUCCESS - THE BEST SO FAR!!! ***
First of all, the hall was VERY nice, with LOTS of room for everyone
to set up, walk by and browse, etc. We had plenty of room to display
our crafts, and lots of room to set up cages.
Since we have SO many kittens, Priscilla decided to bring them along
and hopefully adopt a few. Well, the first day we adopted out FIVE
kittens! And on Sunday, we had SIX more adoptions!!
On top of that, the crafts brought in over $600, and adding in
adoption donations, and a contribution from a raffle the CFA held, we
made over $1100 this weekend!!
Priscilla is EXTREMELY happy over this weekend - and we are too!
Many, many, many thanks to those who donated crafts, craft materials,
and to the Feliners who stopped by to buy/donate. (Kate McCurdy and
Cindy Fisher were a few we saw there!).
The next step for the shelter is to buy and install wire fencing.
Since the major cost will be labor, Priscilla would like volunteers to
get together to do it, if possible. So, if anyone is interested in
helping, please let me know - the more hands we have, the quicker it
will happen! Priscilla will have to get back to me on when this will
happen - we'll keep you posted.
Also, we're sure we can use hands and cat carriers for the day of the
big move - so we'll be sure to let you know when that happens, if
you're interested in helping.
Again - thanks to the support of the Feliners - our kitties will be
"sitting pretty" in their new home soon!

4957.12 | Thanks for the update | MR4DEC::COLAIANNI | | Mon Oct 14 1991 12:37 | 20 |
| Hi Pam!
Thanks for that note! Looks like the shelter is nearing it's goal
quickly!
I wanted to let you know that if I am available the day of the move,
I'd be glad to help, and even if I'm not available, I think I have
three carriers that can be borrowed. Two of them are fairly large, and
could carry two adults or multiple kittens.
Also, make sure to put the date of putting up fences in as soon as you
know. If we are available, my husband used to install fences for a
living, and I may be able to talk him into helping. Or at least
supervising. I've seen fences he put up years ago, and they still ook
great! He has a bad back, so he may not want to dig holes, but he could
help insure that the fence will last a long time. Even if he can't
help, and I'm available, I'd be glad to pitch in and help.

contributed with crafts and material.....and those that
have supported us at the shows. I know a few cats that
probably were very happy when Mom came home...right Kate!!!
George...I wish I knew who you were...because I would have
hunted you down to meet you!!!
The shelter will be at the Boxboro show and the Marlboro
show....so if your there stop by and say hello.
Thanks again for your support.

| The volunteers who have been making craft items for the shows deserve
several rounds of applause! What an impressive display! (I know of
two cats that were impressed with what I brought home for them! And
the others who will be gifted with their catnip pads at Christmas are
sure to be pleased as well.)
Congratulations on all those adoptions, too! The success of the past
two shows must really be spurring all of you on for the next two shows.
It must be exciting to realize there really is light at the end of the
tunnel!
If at all possible, I'd like to help with both the fence and the move.
I can at least help out with some carriers.

Happy really liked her afghan.. and Preschie liked hers..
and Kissy was pretty curious about hers, but she really wanted
Preschies.. I also "saved the kitty mats for her real birthday"
which is Thursday.. I was hoping to surprise her,, but Kissy was
into all the bags when I got home and dragging things about.. sigh,..
They also liked the "catnip pumpkins.."
I also bought some of the vitamins that the proplan folks had out..
Happy and Preschie,REALLY LIKED IT.... Kissy.. well she tried it,,
but she was not that impresed with it.. I was surprised that Happy
liked it,.. she usuallly does not like any other vitamin other
than her pettabs.. I also had a great time holding and spoiling
the lovely Cattyshacks Kristina Rose of Gerry.. what a little doll..
and she was sooooooo good.

4957.19 | Update on the fence | MR4DEC::COLAIANNI | | Tue Oct 15 1991 10:29 | 38 |
| Here's an update on the fence project. I spoke to my husband yesterday,
and he said he would be happy to do whatever he could to help out the
shelter with the fence project!!!!!!!
I spoke with Priscilla yesterday too, and I don't ever remember anyone
being so happy to hear from me in my life!! ;-)
He will be meeting her Friday around noon, and they will go to the new
shelter and walk the grounds and measure the place to within an inch of
it's life, so the shelter can order the correct amount of fencing
material, and get the right materials for the job. I'm so excited that
he just agreed to do it. No devious ploys needed! Sometimes I forget
what a great guy I have! (I'm glad he doesn't read this file! 8-0 )
When Priscilla gets the fencing material, he will oversee the project.
He has a bad back, so will not be able to do that much of the actual
labor, (but I'm sure he'll do more than he should, if I know him) so we
will need lots of volunteers when the time comes, to dig post holes and
get that fence up so the kitties can move to the new shelter!!! He will
be there to make sure the job is done right, so the fence will last
along time.
When the time draws near, I'll let everyone know what tools, if any
will be needed, so we can bring whatever tools we can.
Hmmmm, another idea! I'm just full of them lately! ;-)
I think I'll check into renting a gas operated post hole digger. If
the price is not overwhelming, I will donate that to the shelter for
a day or two. Then the holes can be dug quickly, and we can get right
to work!! Also, that way, if the ground is starting to freeze, we will
have a better chance to get the holes dug at all!
So, now we just have to raise the rest of the money to buy the
material! I'm totally excited about getting involved with this! Let's
keep those crafts for the shows coming! ;-)

4957.23 | An Update on the hole digger | MR4DEC::COLAIANNI | | Fri Oct 18 1991 10:45 | 26 |
| Hi again,
I was talking to Nick last night abou the gas powered post hole
digger, and he said he would not advise using it. Too dangerous. Even
when he did it for a living they didn't use one, because they had seen
people break a hip because the thing hit a stone. I figure the chances
of hitting a stone around here is 100%! I don't want to take a chance
of injuring anyone for the sake of a little time. I'd never forgive
myself!
So, I figure, if we know how many able bodied folks we'll have to
actually dig, I can rent multiple manual hole diggers, and maybe we can
still get the job done fairly quickly. If we have 5 or more people
digging, we should be fine. It goes pretty quickly (or so I'm told 8-0)
because the hole doesn't have to be too big around. It just goes down.
Anyhoo, start recruiting able bodied men, women and children for that
duty! ;-)
Of course I have no idea how large this enclosure will actaully be.
I'll know tonight, as Nick is meeting with priscilla today around
lunchtime! I can't wait to talk to him this evening!
Catch you all later!

4957.24 | Shelter Update | WILLEE::MERRITT | | Fri Oct 18 1991 14:36 | 54 |
| Yvonne....thank you so much for becomming involved and getting
your husband involved too. He'll be the kitty hero of the month!!!
I had the opportunity to see the new shelter last Wednesday...and
even though I have watched the progress all summer long....I walked
out of there with a smile that wouldn't quit. I was beaming from
ear to ear!!!!! Some very creative thinking went into the design.
Some specifics: The shelter has three separate rooms with a
work area and a big hallway which we will use as the storage
area. BTW....the floor is beautiful!!!!! Each room was painted
a different pastel color...pink, green and yellow. The hallway
and service area is blue. Supposingly some vets say the pastel
colors are very mellowing to cats.
Each room has:
o Two very big windows that slide open and has screens
o There are three catwalks (shelves) that were built
at different heights on the window. Each shelf has
a couple of holes so cats can crawl up and down to
the different levels. All shelves have a little lip
so blankets will not slip off.
o At the bottom of the window is a cabinet which will be
used for storage....but the top was built so it can
be another "sleeping spot".
o There are two open walls per room which they built many shelves
which are all different lengths. It kind of looks like stairs
on the wall..but will make it much easier for them to jump
around.
o There is also a big catwalk that goes the width of the room...
and is real close to the ceiling....this is for the cats that
love to perch high!!!
o Each room also has two cat doors that will access the outside
courtyard.
Priscilla also showed us the layout of the fenced in area...and
they will have pleny of room to run around. Outside they have
built little tables...which can be used for sitting...but underneath
the table there is room for about 4 litter boxes apiece.
There is also room in the work area for a sink, refrigidaire, washer,
dryer, and a bathroom. But these are not priorities to get the
cats in there....and hopefully we will work towards obtaining
these luxuries. (never thought I'd see the day that I thought a
bathroom was a luxury...but working at the old shelter makes
you appreciate your bathroom!!!!)
I tell you...seeing the progress has really motivated many of us!!
Again...thanks to all who have helped get us as far as we have.
Sandy

| This sounds so great. It reminds me that I've been meaning to mention
that TreeHouse, whose address is lurking about somewhere in this file,

learned thru trial and error. Sounds like you guys are doing fine,
though.
Pat must be looking down and smiling.

| It occurs to me that, since no one is living on site I assume, that a
fire sprinkler system isprobably on your "wanted" list....
|
4957.27 | | WILLEE::MERRITT | | Fri Oct 18 1991 16:20 | 16 |
| Actually the shelter is built on Priscilla's property...and it
is only about 300-400 yards from her office and house. I think the
fire sprinklers is a wonderful idea...and I'm not too sure anyone
thought about that. I'll have to bring this up to Priscilla and
make sure it gets on our list. Thanks for bringing that up!!!
I'm sure Pat is smiling from ear to ear...and probably feels that
if we take good care of the cats down here...she'll do her best for
the cats that she has met in heaven. Even though Pat is not here
beside us...she has been a very big motivating factor.
We have a bit more sad news too....Bunnie, who is Pat's Mom, is in
the hospital in Intensive care. I beleive those that attended the
Field Trip met Bunnie. Please say a few prayers for her.

4957.28 | exit | MR4DEC::COLAIANNI | | Mon Oct 21 1991 10:37 | 31 |
| Hi all!
Well, Nick went out to the shelter Friday and met with Priscilla and
the carpenter. He measured the enclosure, and told her how many posts
etc. she would need, and what hardware and stuff, and between he and
the carpenter, came up with an extimated cost far below what Priscilla
expected! She also promised to make many calls to many places to see
about pricing material. Nick seems to think that sometimes the folks
that sell this stuff will sell cheaply at this time of year in order to
avoid having to store the stuff inside for the winter. (I guess they
used to do this when he was doing it)
He met one cat while he was there, and said it was one of the
friendliest cats he ever met! Every time he bent down to take a
measurement, (His hands getting close to the ground) there was the
kitty, drubbing against his hands for some loving! He loved it!
Now if we can get the prices, and the funds, we can get those kitties
into the new shelter! I can't wait to see it myself!
BTW, Nick was very impressed with Priscilla. I told him, "what's there
not to be impressed about? That was an incredible project she
undertook, and it is becoming a reality!" She has had a lot of help,
but to even think of taking on a project this large deserves alot of
respect in my book!
I'll let you know if I hear any more about the fence.
Later,
Y

4957.31 | Volunteers needed | WILLEE::MERRITT | | Mon Oct 21 1991 14:14 | 48 |
| Priscilla has asked me to put this in the notesfile with hope
of finding some new volunteers.
VOLUNTEERS NEEDED FOR CLEANING/FEEDING
----------------------------------------
O Volunteers needed during the week. (Mon-Fri)
O Volunteers needed during the weekend. The shelter has
divided the volunteers into Saturday and Sunday teams.
Based on how many teams, the teams alternatate and you
might only have to work one Saturday or one Sunday in
a month. (this is how it works now...but we are losing
some volunteers)
RESPONSIBLITIES:
---------------------
There are two separate houses and the chores are done in both:
(with 2 people this normally takes about 3-4 hours)
O Feeding, changing water, filling bowls with dry food
O Scooping kitty litter
O Brushing off bedding/changing bedding if dirty
O Light housecleaning...(sweeping, dishes, vacumming)
O Medicating
O Groom and play with cats
O hugs and lots of kisses
VOLUNTEER QUALIFICATIONS
-------------------------
O Kitty lover (of course)
O Dependable/Responsible
As many of you already are volunteering for shelters this job can
be very rewarding. There is nothing like finding a home for one of the
kitties...and the joy it brings. Or rescuing a cat that was very abused...
and just seeing his/her progress in the shelter and the love it still
has inside just waiting to come out. And can you imagine all of us...once
we get in the new shelter. But I will admit there are some very sad times
too....and you must take comfort from the other cats and the support of all
the volunteers. I have met some wonderful people since I started
volunteering.
If you would like further info...please send me a note off-line or you
can call Priscilla directly at 508-582-4539.

4957.33 | PAT BRODY SHELTER | FRICK::AMCGOWAN | | Thu Oct 31 1991 14:21 | 17 |
| I Just had to write and tell all of you of my experience with the
Pat Brody Shelter in Lunnenburg. I was really impressed by the
beautiful cats they had. Each one was so well groomed and mild
mannered. You can tell that they are well cared for. The only
sad thing is that these poor little orphans need love and attention.
I was surrounded by purring loving little creatures. I kept picking
up one after the other kissing them and hugging each one. There were
two posatively magnificent orange male tigers with double paws. They
are litter mates and were so friendly! I gave Pricilla, the new owner
of the shelter an extra $20.00 to help with the expenses.
If you have not been to this Shelter I would suggest a trip there
sometime. The kitties need love and attention and I found it a real
pleasure to meet all of them.
Take care,
Arlene

| We really don't like to post directions in NOTES, since you really
never know who will be reading it -- sad to say, there may be some
cat haters out there who will find the shelter and may try to
vandalize it. Of course, the regular readers/writers of this
file would never THINK of such a thing -- but I've heard some
stories about sickos that go into notesfiles just to cause trouble!!
Besides, the shelter doesn't really have any regular hours that
we are open. If you would like to visit, send mail to Sandy Merritt
or myself and we'll send directions and meet you there. Or call
Priscilla if you're interested in adopting, and she'll arrange
a time for you.

| I am the proud owner of two of the shelters kittens. I went to the
Boxborough show on Saturday with ever intention of buying two Maine
Coons. I stop by the shelter's booth and fell in love with one of
the kittens (Spaz 2). I spoke to Priscilla and told her of my
intentions which by then had changed to one Maine Coon and one
of the shelter's kittens. She told me about another kitten she had
back at the shelter (Cuddles kitten) who was part Maine Coon and
said she would bring it to the show on Sunday. By Sunday afternoon
we had become the proud parents of Spaz 2 and Cuddles kitten (hereafter
known as Sammy). They are two of the sweetest, most well behaved
kittens I've seen. They have stolen our hearts. They just can't
get enough affection.

| While I'm here, I guess I could give an update on the fence for the
shelter. Priscilla has been actively seeking the gauge of fencing we
need for the enclosure, and all fence companies seemed to be out of it
for the season! One place put her in touch with a wholesaler, who said
he could have the fencing milled. That is what is happening now. We;re
waiting for the fencing material to be milled. Then we can get going
with digging all those holes!
There will have to be holes dug throughout the enclosure, not just the
outside edge, as we have to cover the whole thing to keep the kitties
from going south, so to speak. ;-)
So, warn all the able bodied volunteers that there will be lots to do!

| Congratulation Carole....so happy you adopted Spaz 2 and also
the Maine Coon. That's great!!!! I'm glad they settled right in!!!
It was nice meeting you on Saturday too!!
As far as the count currently at the shelter...well no one has
dared to ask Priscilla...but my guess would be about 75 adults
and 35 kittens! (kittens are still ar Priscilla's house)
BTW...the cats that we took to the show spent about a week in
the new shelter. It was so great seeing little pitter patter
of paws running around on the catwalks and new linoleom. Yup...
the floor was christened with little poop paw marks...but
oh what a joy cleaning it!!!

4957.42 | Update on Clarissa (from Brody Shelter)
| RDVAX::BELMORE | | Wed Nov 13 1991 11:45 | 11 |
| Just wanted to give you a quick update on Clarissa. My friend Ellen and
her daughter Alexandra adopted Clarissa this past Sunday (from the show
at the Host Hotel in Boxboro).
Clarissa is doing well in her new home and is adjusting just fine. There's
still a little hissing now and then between Clarissa and Mickey (the other
cat) and a little confusion on Sophie's part (the family dog) -- but, all
seems to be going well.
Clarissa seems very happy with her new home and they are all quite pleased
with her!

| Update on New Shelter:
I was with Lisa last night at the new shelter...and was very surprised
to see that all the fence posts were in!!! Priscilla's carpenter
took advantage of the warm weather we had the last few days...and
all posts are installed.
I am also happy to share that there are atleast 15 kitties already
living in the new shelter in the room which is totally completed.
Any cat that comes from the vet and has a clean bill of health...
is being brought to the new shelter.
Cindy Gerry and the two vets we deal with have been so wonderful
helping Priscilla to develop a process for moving the cats. At
first we thought we could have a big moving day...but a process
has been put in place whereas only a few cats get moved at a time.
The reason for this is that each cat will be given a flea bath,
ears totally cleaned, and dewormed if needed. Each cat will also
spend 2 days in a cage prior to giving them freedom in the
new shelter....so we can get stool samples and monitor their
overall health It is a longer process...but in the long
run I think it is the smartest thing to do!!
God...I beam from ear to ear when I walk in the new one!!!

4957.46 | I'd live at the shelter ... ;-) | XNOGOV::LISA | Give quiche a chance | Mon Nov 25 1991 05:45 | 12 |
| I was amazed when I went to the new shelter!! It's like a house!! We
spent some time with the first inmates - ended up sitting on the floor
in my best skirt. They were so pleased to see us, shame I couldn't take
any home. Two of the kittens got quite attached to me in more ways than
one ... you had to be there!
We also visited the old shelter - found a friend there too ;-)
Looking forward to my next visit!!
Lisa.

4957.47 | Clarissa's foster mom finally heard from... | BOOKIE::FISCHER | | Mon Nov 25 1991 18:02 | 26 |
| Thanks, Sandy and the rest of you, for the updates on Clarissa, as well as
for your support. I apologize for not entering a note sooner, but my new
puppy and work deadlines have been keeping me rather busy.
I was so proud of Clarissa when we arrived at the Boxboro show! I had
feared that she might revert to being shy, but she handled the cage and
passersby with no problem. She let me hold her for about 15 minutes
before I put her in her cage. She made a beeline for her food dish and
then settled in on an afghan, looking very pretty and contented.
I must admit to becoming a bit emotional when I met Clarissa's new owners
and realized that she really was going to be adopted. (Priscilla became
even more emotional, which almost got me going again.) We are all truly
thrilled that Clarissa found such a wonderful home. Alexandra, the little
girl who along with her mother adopted Clarissa, has sent Priscilla a note
telling her how much they love Clarissa. I have just sent Alexandra some
pictures that I took of Clarissa a few weeks ago.
Gypsy is more relaxed now and enjoying being the only cat, but she is not
too thrilled about the new puppy. She is finally asserting herself and
letting the puppy know she is not one of his littermates (but that fluffy
tail of hers can be real tempting!). Hopefully before too long there will
be a note relaying another adoption success story. Gypsy is going to do
just fine in a one-pet household.
