When we took in our Marge last year we noticed she had a tattoo in her
right ear, niether the local human society nor our vet were able to
shed any light on what it might mean. I just found out about this note
and thought someone here might know. I have heard that one can have
one's pet tattooed for identification if lost but if that was the case
then I would think that the vet or the H.S. would have known about
this.

Pet stores and other organizations provide tatooing for pet
identification but I have never heard of it being in the ear.
FWIW, I believe that CFA allows for such indentification but
it must be a certain size and located on the leg.

Maybe it's a driver's license number? Does your state give out
addresses in such a case?

If you are suggesting Marge has a drivers licence we can rule that one
out, car ride = vee, ee, tee in her little mind. Then again she does get
the same demonic, glazed eye look as Toonces the Driving Cat when you rub
her belly in a certian way now that I think of it...
If your suggestion was serious we can also rule it out as drivers
licence numbers here (Ontario, Canada) are 20 characters, vehicle plates
are 6 characters, the tattoo is only 4 (or 5, hard to tell).

I know of two greyhounds who are tatoo'd in both ears. Why not a
cat.....

I believe the practice of tattooing in the ear was stopped once it was
discovered that ears could be "removed" thus removing the tattoo. I
think that both CFA and AKC recommend the inside thigh now.
