4950.0. "California Law on Pet Immunizations?" by MIVC::MTAG () Fri Sep 20 1991 17:07

What are California rules/laws (if any) concerning moving into the
state with cats? I heard recently that California is pretty strict and
new pets coming in must have shots first.

    Thanks,
    Mary

California does not have a state law requiring that rabies be given for
*cats*, only for dogs. But, if the cats are flying into the state, the
airline may require them to have the rabies shots before they will ship
    them.

There are no state laws requiring vaccinations against the upper
respiratory diseases either, but it is a good idea for your cat to have
them. The only useful thing that I can think of is that you have your
cats examined by your vet and have him issue you a Department of
Agriculture Health Certificate before you travel. If you are flying
in, the airlines will require it on all the animals. If you are
driving, it would be a handy thing to have.

California is very strict on importing produce to the state. Do not
bring any fresh vegetables or fruits, or plants for that matter, with
you into the state. You will have to leave them at the border. This
is because California is an agricultural state and we don't want any
new bugs brought into the area that will destroy crops.

Thanks Jo. I'm putting the cart before the horse here... my husband
applied for a job in San Diego last week and I'm trying to look ahead
just in case the job comes through. If it does, I'll be back in this
file looking for vets and other assorted info/help.

San Diego is pretty nice! You would probably love it there. I get
down there about once a year for a cat show. My husband went to
college there and has very found memories of it. ;^)

I have a friend that is living down there so I could probably help you
to find a good vet, etc. My friend is a breeder, and we breeders have
generally checked out all the vets in our given area before we settle
    on one.

When we moved to California from Maryland my mom was heartbroken to
have to leave her 20 year old, 6 ft. tall diffenbachia at the border.
Be sure not to bring any type of plant life with you if you come. It
was like parting with a member of the family for my mom. Had we known
we would have given the plant to a friend in Maryland before we made
    the trip.

I moved to San Diego about eighteen months ago (and since moved back,
but NOT for reasons of climate.) Snoopy rode on the airplane with me,
but the Manchester, NH airport was VERY fussy about the crate size--
Snoopy was larger then and couldn't easily turn in the cage that fit
under the seat. I don't think she turned around in the whole eight
hours, though, 'cuz the vet gave her the kitty equivalent of Qaaludes.
However, I was required to buy a larger cage that had to go in the hold
(which I would have thought was more upsetting.) They also wanted to
see her health certificate (I had asked the vet to give Snooper the
appropriate exam and papers for travel to California.) No one since
then checked any of her papers.

Coming back, the San Diego airport did NOT care to see her proof of
shots, and thought she fit in the smaller cage fine (by then, she had
gone from twelve to seven pounds, and twelve pounds was FAT on this
cat). The clerk who checked my ordinary luggage did think she was
cute, though. It really eased my mind to have her in the cabin with
    me.

Taking the dog back, that was another story. And, thank God, another
    trip.

Well, we haven't heard yet regarding the job my husband is going for.
I have a feeling thousands of people applied and it will be awhile
    before we hear anything.

Re: .3 There was a vet in my vet's office that relocated to California
but I'm not sure where. His name was Dr. Liebl and he worked on my
Gonezo quite some time ago. I really liked him. If we do end up
relocating, I will have to look him up. However, I must first convince
my husband that the *cats come with me* should this come through. He
is allergic to them (but then again, he's allergic to everything else
    too! ;} ).
