| Chris,
The possibility of adopting a pure Maine Coon cat from a shelter is
very remote. You could, however, find a lookalike that will be just as
fluffy and beautiful. Lots of mixed breed cats resemble Maine Coons
and make wonderful pets.
The ad you saw is about right for pet quality 'coons here on the east
coast. I live in Mass, and most breeders sell their pets for
$350-$400. Another option would be to check your local want ads.
Sometimes folks give away purebred cats with papers free to a good
home, for various reasons. With any luck, you might happen upon a coon
for adoption. I can check our want ads here, as I read them on a
regular basis.
Good luck in your search!

| Roberta,
Thanks for your response. Yes, I would appreciate it if you could keep
an eye on your local ads for Maine coons, just to see if any are
available for less than the $350-400 range (I had no idea they were so
expensive). I live in eastern PA and work in New York City. I asked
the Cat Fancier's Association in NJ to send me a list of breeders for
Maine coons. In case you run across anything, my DTN is 352-3047.
Thanks again.

| Both of my neighbor nephew kitties are Maine coon look-a-likes; I
believe one came from a shelter and the other was bought at a flea
market. So, you can probably get about what you're looking for, save a
ton of money, and give an abandoned cat a home if you take a trip or
two to the local shelters.

| Chris,
I just thought of something else. Look up some local breeders in your
area (Cats and Cat Fancy Magazine have a breeders section in back by
breed) and contact them to see if they have any adults they would like
to place. Many times, a breeder will spay or neuter a cat that was
used in their breeding program for several years and place it for the
price of a spay or neuter into a good, loving "pet" home. I got my
Himalayan cat this way. He was a little over two years, but it didn't
matter to me. I prefer cats to kittens. I justified him as "needy",
since he was a neutered cat in a home full of intact breeding cats.
This isn't a bad thing, it's just that he was one of 15 or so and
really belonged in a home with fewer cats. He is very happy with us,
and us with him!

| Sorry to hear about the loss of your friend. But, despite how
painful it is, it is just so great to have a kitty in your life that
it's great you're ready to find another special friend.
My Ruby, the love of my life was a pure Coon. He was from Maine,
where "shags" as they are called, are often found in shelters, or
abandoned as the litter was that Ruby came from. He was the most
incredible cat you could imagine! But, I could talk all day about
coons....they're really great. Sometimes, they are available at
shelters, just like other purebred cats or dogs. It doesn't always
matter that a person spent a great deal of money for an animal, they
still abandon purebreds just like any other animal. I definately have
seen them. But, they are few and far between.
The CATS magazine has a large section of breeders, there are quite a
few in your area. I would suggest checking them out anyway. As
previously suggested, sometimes they do place cats that were formerly
used for breeding. And pet quality is usually a little cheaper than
show quality.
I can keep an eye out around here for you, but when you get the list
of breeders, do check them out. By really getting familiar with the
breeders, the cats and their characteristics and the whole system, you
will be better prepared to make a decision, especially if it involves
an expensive purchase.

| Denise,
Thanks for the information and sharing your experience with Ruby. I
will continue to call local breeders, but it looks as though the timing
may be wrong. The first one I spoke to said she has three available
now (at $400), but won't be breeding her cats again until spring. I'm
keeping my fingers crossed that we will get lucky and will be able to
find a Coon for adoption in early November. If you run across any
leads, I'd appreciate hearing about them.
