4919.0. "A Case of Mistaken Identity" by YOSMTE::CORDES_JA (Set Apartment/Cat_Max=3..uh,I mean..Cat_Max=5) Mon Sep 09 1991 15:37

    Last night Onyx got out of the house. I was frantic. He hadn't
    been outside since he lived under the patio at the tender age of
    12 weeks.

    I kept calling him trying to get him to come to me. He was just
    having a great time playing with bugs, etc. He went to the neighbors
    patio, I tried to follow but the new neighbors have put a bolt on their
    patio gate. I chased him back to my side by flashing a flashlight
    under the fence. At one point he came close to going inside but the
    screen door was closed so he couldn't get in and he ran the other way.
    I stuffed my other 4 cats into the bedroom and opened the screen so
    he could get in. I put a bowl of food just inside the door. I was
    getting worried that I wouldn't be able to catch him. About that
    time he ran down the sidewalk and came face to face with a large
    orange cat. I called him and at that point he looked up at me
    sweetly and came right to me. I picked him up and told him how
    worried I was and carried him into the house.

    I let all the cats out of the bedroom and proceeded to relax. All
    of a sudden I was hearing hissing and growling coming from the kittens.
    Domino was trying to attack Onxy. I couldn't figure this out. He
    had only been outside for 10-15 minutes. I finally grabbed Onxy and
    cradled him in my arms exposing his stomach. There was a whole section
    of white fur in the bikini area of this cat. This was not Onxy. Onxy
    only has about 10-20 white hairs there.

    I put imposter kitty in the dog crate I had on the patio, took my
    flashlight and set out to find Onxy again. Finally saw him and chased
    him back to my patio. He got interested in imposter kitty in the crate
    and went to sniff it and I grabbed him and rushed him inside. Yep, I
    did check the belly to be sure it was him. Let poor imposter kitty out
    of the crate and all was back to normal. I don't have a clue where
    that other cat came from. I've never seen him before but, I bet he had
    the same dad as Onyx and Domino.

4919.1weird feeling...SANFAN::BALZERMAMon Sep 09 1991 20:1116

    Jan, didn't you get the strangest feeling when it hit you it wasn't Onyx?
    Last Thanksgiving I was back East and was staying at Mama Cin's house.
    We were going to a show in Brooklyn so I stayed the night before.
    Earlier in the evening we were discussing kitty "sleeping" arrangements
    as Diane was dropping Alex off and Dweebs was there too. I came in
    about midnite from my class reunion and was pleased to find Bailey
    waiting for me at the door. I bent over, picked him up and held
    him in the air (like at a show), put his face right in front of mine
    and then screamed. It wasn't Bailey. Now, the kitchen was dim and
    I had had a couple of cocktails but this was ridiculous! Mama Cin had
    changed the sleeping arrangements. It was Alex! :')

4919.3Strange, to be sureYOSMTE::CORDES_JASet Apt./Cat_Max=3..uh,I mean 5Mon Sep 09 1991 20:349
    It makes me feel a bit strange that I couldn't tell Onxy from the
    other cat but then I have to remember that when they're side by side
    I sometimes have a hard time teling Domino and Onyx apart. Until I
    pick them up. Domino weighs 6 lbs and Onyx weighs 4 lbs. Timm says
    that Domino has a longer face...I dunno...maybe that is true. I guess
    I'm just the kind of person that can't have cats of similar color and
    looks. Never be a breeder this way, that's for sure.

    Well, if you're going to breed Jan, pick a breed that comes in
    lots of different colors, like Scottish folds. ;^) I hardly
    ever mix anyone up.
