4896.0. "ADVICE FOR TIGRESS" by FRICK::AMCGOWAN () Tue Sep 03 1991 13:03

I need some advice. My little Tigress started pulling her hair out
down on her back and the base of her tail. I took her to the vet who
said that she has an anal gland infection. He prescribed medication,
one pill twice a day for two weeks. Things got better but not cleared
up. He has now put her on a lesser dose for another two weeks. He
told me that the base of the medication is steroids. She is still not
better. I am concerned since she is such a tiny kitty and I do not
think that she should be on all of this medication. Has anyone else
had this problem?? Should I see another vet? Has anyone ever heard of
the Cat Doctor in Bedford Ma.?

    Please let me know.

    Thanks,
    Arlene

PS. You were all very helpful when I turned to you with my Marvin's
urinary infection. He is now on Hill's CD diet and doing quite well.
Now, I need your advice for little Tigress

I don't know how your cat her being a kitten affects this, but Holly
    as an adult was on
a steroid for about that long with no apparent ill effects. I think
2-4 weeks doesn't qualify as "long term use", which is when you start
to be particularly concerned abotu side effects.

I've been told by a feline cardiologist that cats tolerate long term
steroid use far better than do humans.

    Arlene,

I wouldn't worry about the steroids. They've gotten a bad rap because
some humans abuse them, but under a doctor's care, they are safe,
effective medication. Stick with your vet's treatment. The steroids
will reduce inflammation and make Tigress feel better faster.

    Keep us posted...
