4895.0. "Kittens are dying very quickly" by FRAGLE::PELUSO (PAINTS; color your corral) Tue Sep 03 1991 09:27

My girlfriend's cat had 4 kittens. As of last nite 2 of them
had dies, and a third was on it's way. She called a vet and I was
kinda horrified to hear what the vet had to say....He said that the
tom probably had Felv, and the kittens were dying from it. That sounds
a little far fetched to me. From listening to you folks, I would guess
they had an upper resporitory thing.....they wern't breathing real
well, gums and paw pads were pale, and generally listless.

THe fourth one seemed healthy, so she isolated it from the others,
and started feeding it KMR and baby cereal.

Is the vets suggestion off the wall, or what? He did want them to
bring the kitten in, but just to walk in the door on a holiday would
have been $60 (more than they could have spent).....

Would it be worth trying to save the fourth, or will he die anyway?
    Any suggestions? comments?

    Michele

Distemper can wipe out a litter, and the male might
have had it, or a virus, or something worse.....

Or it might have been that the kittens are dying from blood type
incompatibility. Lots of different things can kill newborn kittens.
The best way to protect the remaining kitten is to isolate her (which
you have done), and possibly necropsy one of the deceased kittens to
find a cause of death. If the kittens were showing any signs of upper
respiratory, then the remaining baby may need antibiotics.

Also, aren't pale gums (white) an indication of shock? Blue gums would
be poor circulation and lack of oxygen I think. Someone with a nurse
background might be able to tell you this for sure.

I believe pale gums are a sign of anemia as well as shock.

I lost 5 kittens to anemia caused by fleas....the mother was a stray
and the kittens were too young to treat....it was terrible!!

Three of the four have died. The fourth is holding her own. In fact
they feel she is doing much better. Only time will tell. They were
going to call a vet to come check her out.

The flea thing sounds like a possibility....what were the symptoms?

4895.8flea infestation anemia is awfulWR2FOR::CORDESBRO_JOset home/cat_max=infinityWed Sep 04 1991 14:209
The symptoms of flea anemia in young kittens are kittens that are
covered with fleas and being literally eaten alive. Young kittens
cannot afford to lose the kind of blood an infestation of fleas can
    steal from them.

The newborns can be washed with warm water and a mild soap, and have
the fleas picked off by hand or with a flea comb.

    well I don't think that was it.....they wern't infested.....but then
again I guess it depends on your own particular definition. We've
picked a flea or two off from time to time......nothing major.
