4894.0. "moggies vs purebred mix" by SUBURB::THOMASH (The Devon Dumpling) Mon Sep 02 1991 12:47

I was reading an article last week regarding how differentlt the
British regard their cats and dogs.

One of the items covered delt with the mix of purebred to mix-'n'-match

60% of dogs are registered as purebred.

10% of cats are registered as purebred.

It seems we just about prefer purebred dogs rather than mongrels,

but with cats we much prefer moggies to purebreds.

Does anyone know if the split is recorded in the US, and if so, what
	it is?
	(or a guestimate?)

I'm no expert, but that sounds about right to me. Maybe the purebred
cat count would be a bit higher here, tho. When I think of all of the
people I know who have cats & dogs, (Lots & lots) this jives w/ my own
    guesstimate.

Don't forget that cats survive in the wild much better than dogs
so the moggies live long enough to breed. I don't doubt for a minute
    that moggies outnumber purebreds.

Another factor - many many people don't realize that there is
such a thing as a purebred cat. You'd be surprized how many people
react when I tell them about my Scottish folds by saying "You mean
there are purebred cats like purebred dogs?"

These were the %ages of pets, it didn't include strays..........
...........although both my two moggies were strays!

I have noticed that people understand siamese and persians are breeds,
	but that's about it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Yes but more moggies, from whatever source, means more pets. My
Bob is a prime example, so is Jesse, so is GBOF etc etc etc
